bita_nidir··on UK House of Lords to propose mandatory CSAM detection software on smartphones
I can confirm your detector is functioning as advertised.
bita_nidir··on UK House of Lords to propose mandatory CSAM detection software on smartphones
Saving and sharing would still function, albeit in a slight different way.

  - Saving, as before.
  - Sharing, works, but due to a glitch the recipient got a blank blank image/video. He'll sure reply to let you know, but unfortunately incriminate himself in the process.
  - Deleting, as before, no sorry, bugger, I/O error, can't delete this file. But support team has your address and is on their way.

I don't get the fuss. This is absolutely only going to be used to detect CSAM content, this year.
bita_nidir··on Kitty 0.50
Ah, the post I responded to wasn't talking about Kovid's interactions with users.

I agree that he could do a lot better with controlling his emotions. Me and him are on the opposite ends of the tmux debate for example. But I understand his point, he's trying to solve the same problems that tmux solves, with a very different way.

The problem is that Kitty isn't there yet (I wish it was) and his outburst on the topic are quite damaging to his goals.

When you've met and worked with people in real live that are like that, you can just visualize them and have a laugh at their outbursts.

I'm still team Calibre and Kitty any day and tremendously thankful for what he's doing.

bita_nidir··on Goodbye Claude, Hello Pi
Is it just me or has Opus 5.5 on High been disappointing for the last week or so? It's been making a lot of silly mistakes, bash issues and killing it's own shell much more than usual.
bita_nidir··on US FAA says it will phase out floppy disks from air traffic control by 2028
Anyone who's worked around systems in that category knows that the fact that they're replacing floppies is more scary than the fact that they're still using floppies.

Yes, the system is old and warty, but we know it. It's old Jim the warthog.

bita_nidir··on Blender's UI and Runtime: Much Faster Than GPUI
Really? From what I've heard, Iced, Slint, Dioxus Native, Freya, etc are all slower.
bita_nidir··on Blender's UI and Runtime: Much Faster Than GPUI
Nice! I've been waiting for someone to do this for a long time. Now I'll just need to wait a bit longer for someone to apply this to FreeCAD. Boy oh boy!
bita_nidir··on Kitty 0.50
Wow. It works for him and it works for me. I'm forever grateful for what he's done and I feel this bashing is totally undeserved. Kitty and Calibre are two of my favorite software thingies ever.

Everyone: There is nothing more annoying than this beeping and flashing screen.

JonnieCache: Hold my beer.

(brilliant work btw)

bita_nidir··on Show HN: HackerBooks – HackerTube, but for books mentioned on HN
> I mostly steered and made calls, bought the domain name, etc.

Correct move on handling the financial aspect yourself. I asked my mine to do everything but forgot to give it some dough. It sorted it all out but ended up with $6.3B on its account and I think it might have done something dodgy.

bita_nidir··on Show HN: OmniDiff – Opensource, super fast, content aware Git difftool, in Rust
Wow, I've often wished I had a tool like this. Thanks!

Since most people do click-and-run most of the time (based on decades long research, n=1), I'll just add paste the link for more examples: https://ivankovic.github.io/omnidiff/showcase/content.html

bita_nidir··on French lawmakers approved a tax of €0.055 for every gigabyte of internet traffic
Weird smear.

There are over 10,000 taxing jurisdictions in the US, so good luck with even trying to figure how many different taxes.

bita_nidir··on Nietzschian Debugger
> Tears apart your weak reasoning until only truth remains

I've done that to myself quite some times when writing a very detailed report on an issue. Back in the day of stackoverflow (godbless and godspeed, glad Joel made it out and sorry for the investors) you had to be detailed to maximize on your initial viewers.

I think the idea is the same with the rubber duck debugging method although I've never tried it myself.

bita_nidir··on Show HN: OnKey – I'm a bad singer, so I built an app to show where I'm off-key
In a small defence to webview/tauri, it's pretty smooth and fast, and multi platform free of charge. I'd have done this in Tauri too, but that's just my voice. But I otherwise totally agree with you.
bita_nidir··on Show HN: OnKey – I'm a bad singer, so I built an app to show where I'm off-key
Wow, this is brilliant, thanks for sharing it! I've had pretty much this app way down on my TODO list for the last 20 years. I was planning a Linux and violin support too.

One of my methods for my pet projects is just to wait for someone else to do it, worked this time :)

I might chuck this into Claude when I have tokens to spare and see how it'll do with my feature request. Are there any specific apple silicone limitations you can remember? I'll send you a PR if you're interested?

bita_nidir··on Android apps running native on macOS
I've recently asked claude to be concise in writing documents. It's brilliant for me. You get things like:

  <cmd> force-off # pull the plug
No faffing around.
bita_nidir··on Containment and monitoring failures are to blame for AI hacking reports: experts
When people know and don't do anything, it's not "monitoring failure". Would willful negligence be more correct?
bita_nidir··on TV4 postpones show after AI agent erases edited material
Not really. If you read between the lines you see there's a story she's avoiding.

> It is not true that some independent AI agent went in and deleted the material

Notice the wording. It's a half-truth response. She's probably correct, but the accusation wasn't that a "some independent AI agent went in and deleted the material". Just a AI deleted the material.

Then backup failed as the reason. That's not THE reason. You don't need backups unless you lose your data. How did the data get lost?

bita_nidir··on Maybe a better way to track the release history of a Git repo
> This made a complete record of what was deployed, where, and when.

Personally I wouldn't store this info as refs in git.

But If i had to, I'd store them under subdirectories, try "git checkout -b "host/person/version/diet/cookies/bug-fix-for-joe".

It gets created as directory structure under .git/refs.

bita_nidir··on Sound (2022)
Oh how I'd wanted to have this when I was a kid learning an instrument. I had all these questions but no one had a answer for me. Music teachers were like "because it's the 3rd, or because it's the 5th". If I could go back in time I'd show them this. THIS! SEE IT! THIS IS WHAT I WANTED TO KNOW!

bita_nidir··on Will Linux phones become a viable alternative to the Android/iOS duopoly?
OP is asking about Linux phones. HarmonyOS doesn't even run Linux kernel at all.

HarmonyOS 5.x+ both discards the common Unix-like Linux kernel and replaces the previous multiple-kernel, kernel agnostic system from OpenHarmony with its own bespoke HarmonyOS microkernel as a single framework.

GTA didn't exist back then, so I had to learn them from the lore.

And shortly afterwards, in addition to all the different physics-in-action experience, I learned about how car insurance excess works.

bita_nidir··on Telegram Desktop vulnerability allowed any user's file to be stolen
Of course, I was just saying "by default". You should be able to allow any access as you want, give it your old socks or granny. Just not by default.
bita_nidir··on Telegram Desktop vulnerability allowed any user's file to be stolen
Related: could we please stop, by default, allowing software to:

  a) access all your files, and
  b) roam the internet at will.
That was somewhat OK in the 80s, but it hasn't been since.

bita_nidir··on Show HN: Audionaut – an open-source cross-platform multitrack audio editor
Wow, thanks! I don't have time to look at it now, but it'll go high on my list. I had a quick look though the docs and I see it supports regions. Does it have labels too? Can I import/export labels and/or regions from file?

Perhaps an idea to create a docs/features.md to mention what it can do. Might even help LLMs picking up your project. Thanks again, I'm very exited!
