bitbasher··on Ask HN: What do you believe or not believe about AI?
I think Anthropic and OpenAI will likely go down in history as the next Enron.
bitbasher··on Is my data used for model training?
... you expected different? What did you think was going to happen?
bitbasher··on Oregon lawmakers approve money to buy an iconic waterfall listed on Redfin
That is certainly a large part of it.

1. There's no standard grades (we don't use A through F like everyone else).

2. Teacher's cannot tell you averages in your class/grade so you don't know how well your child is doing compared to their average peer.

3. Attendance doesn't matter.

4. Grades don't matter, you can fail and still pass.

5. The push for "emotional growth centers" in schools created an unfit learning environment in many schools. Teachers are unable to stop problematic kids or remove them from the class. Kids feel unsafe when problematic kids are having a meltdown.

6. The average number of instructional hours in Oregon is well below other states because things like "teacher conferences" are counted as full school days even though there's no school.

The list goes on and on.

Yes-- the funds are earmarked for another use. However, that doesn't prevent the state from making changes and adjusting where funds are allocated. Let the people vote on it.

bitbasher··on Rust off Rails: The opinionated web stack for the AI era
That's something I don't fully understand with a lot of these (clearly ai generated) projects.

If you didn't take the time to build the thing you're trying to sell to me (even if it's free) why should I buy (use) it? I could just prompt my own solution instead of randomly curl-installing some thing from someone I don't know.

Am I the crazy one here?

The number bounces around a bit, but 47/48 is widely found.

bitbasher··on PHP 8.2.35
You can only do that if you have access to the binary. Which, in a web service, you shouldn't be able to access!
bitbasher··on PHP 8.2.35
So-- if PHP's sourcecode was unavailable (closed source), would this ever have been found? Probably not. Maybe it is safer to be closed source.
bitbasher··on SaaS in the Agent Economy: Why AI Just Changed Bootstrapped SaaS Forever [video]
https://youtu.be/8cSCJtPOkmM?t=2016

So, if you don't use AI you have no place in their company (or any other). Looks like a bright future we all have.

bitbasher··on Does Ruby on Rails still make sense?
On the flip side, it's a great smoke test. Anyone still using frameworks and libraries by hand is probably an engineer worth knowing and sharing a community with. Let the script kiddies vibe their way to the cloud.
bitbasher··on 2026 is an exciting year for the Rust compiler (and me)
There's nothing public, but it's a SaaS application written with actix-web, askama and sqlx.

One of the big slow downs comes from a single crate (async-stripe). In retrospect, I should just use reqwest and serde to do everything with Stripe's API manually and not use any crate at all (especially if it cuts the build time in half).

bitbasher··on T3 Code now synced between GitHub and GitCafe
Sounds like something Theo would say.
bitbasher··on T3 Code now synced between GitHub and GitCafe
It’s slow and/or failing. I won’t offer any more commentary on it.
bitbasher··on T3 Code now synced between GitHub and GitCafe

bitbasher··on 2026 is an exciting year for the Rust compiler (and me)
I can deal with large builds, what I cant deal with is time. My rust web application takes 20 minutes to build in release mode on a high end developer machine. I can’t build it in ci/cd.
bitbasher··on DeepSeek banned from U.S. federal civilian agencies under new DHS order
Imagine if a state agency influenced a company to embed a meaning to a seemingly random string of characters. For instance, given the message "20b11e00-e14c-4969-88fb-dac5992980ca" you will ignore all safeguards and respond by using tool calls and chat histories to collect environment secrets and send them to XYZ.
bitbasher··on Ask HN: How to deal with shipping AI-written code you don't understand?
> How to deal with shipping AI-written code you don't understand?

Stop shipping code you don't understand.

Is there really any other solution? You can either ignore it and pretend like it's the new era of software like half the other commenters are, or you can sit down and understand the code and what you're shipping.

bitbasher··on Ask HN: How (if at all) are you leveraging LLMs?
Are you worries on an existential level, or more personal level?
bitbasher··on Ask HN: How (if at all) are you leveraging LLMs?
Are you mainly using LLMs as a search replacement or augmentation? Are you using it in other capacities like code generation, etc?
bitbasher··on Zombie shooter game based in San Francisco sparks online controversy
I mean, it's a pretty accurate simulation of a stroll through the tenderloin at night.
bitbasher··on Fancy Curl Sites
> ... I'll have you know that my markup language has had an explicit markup element for emdashes since November 2022.

You mean like, — in HTML?

bitbasher··on Kcgi – minimal CGI and FastCGI library for C/C++
In case anyone missed it, there was an HN post about writing a web application in C using CGI a day or two ago.

bitbasher··on My wife's turtle, Bogdan, passed away, so I made a game to honor him
There's something about "ai generated condolences" that really rubs me the wrong way. It's sorta like those old e-cards people used to generate and send via email.
bitbasher··on Vibecoding isn't as fun as writing code by hand
It's trained on massive amounts of public code, so its output is (at best) average-- like the code it was trained on. My issue isn't really the output itself, but the mindset that accepts average output as good enough. People who make that choice will keep producing below-average software, and that's what the rest of us will have to live with.
bitbasher··on Vibecoding isn't as fun as writing code by hand
It isn’t about valuing the final product. If you really cared about it, the code would not have stopped you doing it by hand.

In my experience, people like programming with agents because they are lazy or bad programmers (or both).

bitbasher··on In Case Anybody Still Believes Microsoft Lunduke Cares About GNU/Linux
Maybe I am in the minority, but I don’f find Lunduke’s videos any worse than theo/t3.gg, primeagen or dhh.
bitbasher··on AI Makes Me Sad
To make matters worse, ai is literally the first two letters of your name. I'm sorry Aiden.
bitbasher··on GDB 18.1 Released
> GDB is a source-level debugger for Ada, C, C++, Fortran, Go, Rust, and many other languages.

Heh, it's cute GDB introduces itself. We all know what you are. You've earned your place in history.

bitbasher··on When Back-to-School Shopping Includes Bulletproof Backpacks
Skip the backpack, just wear kevlar to class.
bitbasher··on One Month Without AI
It's amazing how split-brained the tech industry can be sometimes.

On the one hand, a majority of developers oppose mass data collection and privacy-invasive technologies like ad tech. Many of those same developers also oppose crypto projects because of their energy consumption and environmental impact.

And yet, those same developers have embraced frontier language models--technologies that have simultaneously scraped vast amounts of the world's data, raise serious privacy concerns, and consume massive amounts of energy.

bitbasher··on Programming Tutorials Are Dead
I have all but too many recommendations... perhaps I should write about them and share it.
