bitmasher9··on Anthropic IPO Buyers See Valuation as Low as $1.1T
At $250b it would be an acquisition target.
bitmasher9··on Anthropic IPO Buyers See Valuation as Low as $1.1T
Anthropic sells intelligence, and the most intelligent intelligence.

Honestly crazy that we’re doubting 1T, even with all the capital issues behind it.

bitmasher9··on Anthropic IPO Buyers See Valuation as Low as $1.1T
At a minimum we should continue to see smarter and more efficient models in 2027.

If datacenter production sees significant headwind then it’s very bad for ANT. Securing compute is listed as one of their major risks to the SEC.

Usage is not going down. Take a look at their published revenue, it has a nice hockey stick shape.

I’m not making a bigger argument other than I disagree with that one datapoint you mentioned.

bitmasher9··on Bones may release proteins that slow aging and extend life span
I know people asked for it, but I find these types of evolutionary explanations to be very unconvincing. The primary reason is they are largely unfalsifiable narratives. The secondary reason is they are sometimes used to justify positions and viewpoints that would otherwise be unjustifiable.
bitmasher9··on Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half
I think your EV example is a better example than your coal one.

I’ve never seen anyone measure coal power by the amount of chemical energy stored inside, unless they are specifically referring to using it as a heating source. For electricity generated by coal it’s always measured as output.

bitmasher9··on Medicare Will Pay $50k for Your Heart Attack. It Should Pay $100 to Prevent It
America does a better job at assimilating immigrants than most of the rest of the world. It’s just a very hard problem, and the US does more of it than anyone.
bitmasher9··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
It sounds like either your “tasks” are too large or you have some drag somewhere like test cases being too slow to execute.

I’d look into where the model is spending its time and see if you can save some time. Eight hours is more then enough time to have an entire new microservice up and running and to adjust existing microservices to utilize it.

bitmasher9··on Putting Linux on my RTX Spark laptop because I don't have a Microsoft account
Is a Microsoft account required to use Windows on these RTX spark laptops?

Am I being too stubborn for not wanting a cloud account tied to my desktop operating system?

bitmasher9··on NY announces game ownership bill requiring ownership rather than licensing
Politicians say a lot of things near Election Day. It’s obviously a bit for some last minute funding or to target a segment of voters he identified.
bitmasher9··on NY announces game ownership bill requiring ownership rather than licensing
These are leave the game entirely moments for me. The second someone wants me to pay for a box that has random items in it I’m out.

This is actually true of a large market segment.

bitmasher9··on OpenCode 2.0
It’s not obvious to me why this feature shouldn’t be the default.

I routinely run dozens or hundreds of daemons. Why wouldn’t I want one to keep my network connections to llms open?

bitmasher9··on Smart people don't think others are stupid (2012)
The primary argument of this article can be simplified and rephrased as “Only stupid people call other people stupid” which really points the finger back at them.
bitmasher9··on NYC's "Click to Cancel" rule is now in effect
If your career is spent using adobe products you probably want to start with adobe-like as a baseline and make changes on top of it.
bitmasher9··on Iranian campaign planted fake articles in real U.S. publications using ChatGPT
This is classic FUD, Fear Uncertainty and Doubt.

It’s designed to make the reader question which articles they have read recently that are Iranian propaganda, and sow doubt about future articles that seem to benefit Iran.

This amount of FUD always seems to increase around election time…

bitmasher9··on US man given prison sentence for bot-farming music streams
What exactly is a fake email account?
bitmasher9··on US man given prison sentence for bot-farming music streams
If you operate in a tight niche it might be economically worth botting ads to lower your competitors ctr.

There is an asymmetry where paying to create an impression is much more expensive than paying to consume an impression.

bitmasher9··on 3D-printing platform rapidly produces complex electric machines
Drones are just one part of the equation. They are a “last mile” solution, which makes them very strong on battle fronts and come with a defender advantage.

We still require logistics to transport the drones into effective range, intelligence to know the most effective targets, and military grade wireless communications to guide the drones.

If the intelligence is good enough long range missiles can kinetically disable drone production or drone stockpiles.

bitmasher9··on Anti-patterns in software blogging
In journalism this is called “burying the lead.”
bitmasher9··on High Diesel Prices Bankrupted 16 Trucking Companies in Just 30 Days
$30-$40 billion sounds like scrapping by to me. For an entire industry, one of the most important in the country.
bitmasher9··on The work by Valve's Timur Kristóf on improving old AMD GPUs on Linux
Yes, but the debugging process is the most fun part for me.
bitmasher9··on The new Firefox design is here
I do it sometimes for highly related work (referencing on tab against the other) that will be a longer running task (30+ minutes).

It means that both tabs get maximized and minimized at the same time, and the two tabs are always side by side. Which means if I need to jump to another task, like answering a message or joining a video call, I can get back to my work faster. It’s a small thing that helps with context switching.

I do it when I consider both side of the Split View one unified context I am working on. I do it not only with browser tabs, but sometimes terminal tabs. I most commonly do it with IDE tabs.

bitmasher9··on When did Google get so weird?
You can buy keywords for cheaper than ever, by making a a few reddit posts and upvoting them/commenting.
bitmasher9··on Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error
American Democracy started from a place of very strict voter requirements (white, male, adult, landowner) and is trending towards fewer voter requirements.

The registration process is mostly a legacy system to ensure only qualified individuals vote, left over from a time when the bar was much higher.

bitmasher9··on How did AMD Ryzen get 50% faster in two years?
Great points all. I will say that the loading time decrease was probably the single biggest innovation of the PS5, as it standardized SSD loading.
bitmasher9··on How did AMD Ryzen get 50% faster in two years?
I didn’t mean to imply that we should target ps5 as an exclusive platform, but ps5 is a good hardware spec to target, as there are several platforms that can match it and it has a wide install base.
bitmasher9··on How did AMD Ryzen get 50% faster in two years?
> Every game should be targeting the switch 2 and steam deck in terms of power.

I think PS5 is a perfectly reasonable spec to be targeting, which was the higher end of mid range about 5 years ago, and still significantly out performs Switch 2 (which significantly out performs steam deck). I’m sure the GTA sales will demonstrate that the install base at this spec is wide enough for broad commercial success.

bitmasher9··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
GPT would charge more if they could. Both companies need way way more revenue. GPT simply made a calculation that they can earn more money by charging less than their competitors.
bitmasher9··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
If you input 300 bits into an LLM, and it outputs an additional 700bits of new information, I’d still rather you tell me those 1000bits than read ann llm’s output of 1000bits.

The primary reason is that human language is becoming a proof of work, that speaking out loud or writing directly indicates that the idea is important enough for a human to express. This is more costly than llm output, which is often just botspam.

bitmasher9··on I said no and Apple said yes
