bitsavers··on 20000 Gates and 20 MIPS [pdf]
this was part of some research I did when i turned up the reference manual from mascor, ca. 1970, which is the missing link between IBM ACS and the ACS engineers that went to Amdahl.

http://bitsavers.org/pdf/mascor

it was one of several large computer startups that failed in the 1970 recession

bitsavers hasn't auto-redirected in years, but it is random where the search engines will pull from a mirror.
bitsavers··on Bitsavers Software Archive (2022)
Make documents and software available that no one else had. Some people like to fly under the Wikipedia self-promotion radar.
bitsavers··on The ChatGPT-fueled battle for search is bigger than Microsoft or Google
"The company wants to reinvent community-based repositories of information, such as Quora or Wikipedia, using a chatbot to generate the entries instead of humans. "

DO NOT WANT!

bitsavers··on Elon Musk says his workload has reached 120 hours per week
"His tenacity has led to superhuman-like accomplishments"

Was this written by ChatGPT? No human could possibly be that stupid.

bitsavers··on Google Layoffs: Why [laid off employees] are being called 'Golden 12K'
The headline reads "Why employees FIRED by Sundar Pichai" Why the editing?
bitsavers··on Ask HN: Could layoffs be companies firing deadweight?
"some of the higher ups at Salesforce told me they were pretty ticked off about how the employees seemed to have declined in engagement and productivity. "

I wonder, could it be that people are at their emotional wits end over what has happened to their lives since 2019?

bitsavers··on Ask HN: Could layoffs be companies firing deadweight?
"I think companies need to fire deadweight "

I think companies, especially Google, should have thought about the implications of massive hiring associated with things like X, then shutting them down en mass creating a situation where you have staff playing musical chairs trying to find a place to land.

bitsavers··on Ask HN: Could layoffs be companies firing deadweight?
"it is a great excuse to lay off the low performers"

It is a great excuse to get rid anyone who disagreed with corporate changes or mangage to anger anyone in the management chain. Most big companies just put you on 'special' projects, then if you don't get the hint to leave, bundle you into the layoff pool.

bitsavers··on Why we don't play the Emergency Alert System tone on TV
EAS radio announcements go out in the Bay Area for flooding (at least they are supposed to) I know we were careful to do it for Santa Clara county at KFJC
bitsavers··on Why we don't play the Emergency Alert System tone on TV
"The use of the sound is prohibited to prevent people becoming desensitized to something you should only hear in the most dire circumstances."

and then the "protect the children" people created Amber Alerts, which have done exactly that

bitsavers··on Encounter with the Woz (2006)
He is known as "Woz" not "the Woz".

Today, his wife manages autographs and there is a charge for them.

bitsavers··on Man worth $7.48B says Google should cut 28,000 more people after layoffs

bitsavers··on Man worth $7.48B says Google should cut 28,000 more people after layoffs
It is long past time for people to consider that working for public companies might not be in their long-term personal best interest.
bitsavers··on Man worth $7.48B says Google should cut 28,000 more people after layoffs
"Sir Christopher Hohn A British hedge fund manager knighted by the late Queen Elizabeth II says that Google and its parent company, headquartered in the Bay Area, should lay off more people after axing more than 12,000 people."

Title should read: "Upper class hedge fund manager thinks engineers make too much money, wants it for himself".

bitsavers··on Google CEO answers qustions regarding layoffs
"He pleaded with staffers to remain motivated"

I heard a few more details of how they had to create a department since they had never had a layoff before to make everyone's access disappear at the same time. People found out they were gone when their badges stopped working. No contact at all with management.

This was a collosal management failure direct from the top.

Expect experienced people to start to bail.

bitsavers··on Dimon says remote work doesn’t work for bosses, young workers,or spontaneity
Bosses haven't seen any problems with laying off the workers that were under their thumbs for decades, replacing them with outsourcing half a world away. What changed?
bitsavers··on Google Considers Staff Disposable
Do any of these companies consider the institutional knowledge being lost when you lay off someone who has been with them 16 years?
bitsavers··on In Defense of the Commute
Anyone stuck in the Hell that is a driven commute in Silicon Valley would disagree that it does anything to positively stimulate the brain.

I wouldn't argue that getting out is a good thing. Do it off drive-time peaks. Go to the park. Visit some small stores. The main thing I have noticed now after traffic has returned is it is clear that people are not paying attention to their driving. They are doing things like drifting around in lanes, making their intentions particularly difficult to guess, since no one uses turn signals here effectively.
