I am currently finishing a dual major in Math and German. I was originally in Mechanical Engineering, but after teaching myself VBA in order to solve various problems in manufacturing environments I fell in love with programming and have been doing it for fun ever since. In addition to my Bachelor's study I am completing an Associates in CS online as I try to transition away from ME. I am highly interested in moving to the Bay Area, Chicago or any EU country (particularly Germany/Austria/Switzerland, Spain, UK/IRE)

bkcreate··on Ask HN: Why is it easier to get a raise with a new job?
The math is correct but this doesn't factor in inflation, so you probably need to change the original salaries down to whatever $40k in todays money was worth in 2009. That leads to 34k*(1.18)^10 = 178k, which seems much more reasonable
bkcreate··on Bill Gates promises to add his own billions if Congress does nuclear power push
Are you forgetting about the change where all new homes in CA have to have solar panels? We already are moving towards mass adoption of solar, that doesn't stop us from exploring other options that work in less sunny places, at night, etc. Solar won't work everywhere.
bkcreate··on Why I use old hardware
What are some features that you would look for in a laptop so that you could still be using it in 10 years if you bought it new today?
bkcreate··on Ask HN: How did you decide what problems to solve in your lifetime?
I recently watched a TED talk by Peter Singer that went into Effective Altruism pretty well
bkcreate··on Countries that have preoccupied Americans the most since 1900
Ive heard of Quebec and Sesq... however you spell it, but BC is the only one I could point to on a map
bkcreate··on Countries that have preoccupied Americans the most since 1900
To be fair, as an American I don't even need to go to Europe to prove how little non-US geography I know. I can't even name or point to any Mexican or Canadian regions except for British Colombia
bkcreate··on Ask HN: What would you work on without internet access?
Is this mac only?
bkcreate··on Isaac Asimov on The David Letterman Show (1980) [video]
Isn't it more similar to Twitch?
bkcreate··on Ask HN: What “dumbphones” are available and viable in the US?
If you have a samsung, you can do this by putting your phone in battery saver mode
bkcreate··on Uber Neglected Simulation Testing on Self-Driving Cars, Insiders Say
The Uber system would not have braked (and didn't) the system that would have braked was the Volvo system built into the car which Uber purposefully shut off. If Uber cant drive on a clear dry night without killing people they shouldn't be allowed on public roads endagering people who didn't sign up to be around these cars.
bkcreate··on California Opens Investigation into Tesla Workplace Conditions
There a lot more than you would think down here: Honda, Mercedes, Kia, Toyota, Mazda all have plants and many of their suppliers are also in state.
bkcreate··on How to Decide What to Build
At that point why not just organize a meetup and charge admission instead of reinventing the wheel?
bkcreate··on Ask HN: What is the next housing bubble?
Car companies are offering ridiculous deals, and giving out loans to people that don't have good credit. If I had to guess, they didn't learn their lesson and will be in deep trouble again.
bkcreate··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2018)
Not the original commenter but I am currently studying at UA and interested, who could I reach out to for more information about internships?

bkcreate··on The Lottery Hackers
The payout comes from the other bettors losing bets. The state never loses in a lottery.
bkcreate··on Mountain View approves 10,000 homes by Google's North Bayshore project (2017)
Its a little bit of hyperbole to say it still looks like the 70s when there used to still be a lot of orchards back then. They never could have anticipated this growth
bkcreate··on Ask HN: Best companies to work for in Europe?
But that's just the HQ you might get sent to a smaller factory town (Rostock/Bremen/etc.)
bkcreate··on How does ‘class-passing’ actually work?
There might be an aspect of shame where those people are less likely to talk about adjusting to moving down the ladder.
bkcreate··on Understanding Ethereum Smart Contracts
I think a good system to look at copying in the real world is the Czech Koruna or Japanese Yen. It is a real world example of a currency that doesn't use decimal values. This simplifies the math involved and by having each unit have a very small value you can replace cents, and you don't have money "dissapear" due to being rounded off.
bkcreate··on Anti-NIMBY movement is winning with a simple message
The city "pushes" a large part of the homeless population into the Tenderloin. They seem to be quite happy with this set up and don't want to have the homeless spread out throughout the city. It may be altruistic in that it is easier to help them out when you know where they live or a cynical approach to a problem but there isn't much interest in changing the status quo
bkcreate··on Bitcoin mining heats homes for free in Siberia [video]
Your electricity costs are probably significantly higher and you might lose money overall
bkcreate··on Samsung Made a Bitcoin Mining Rig Out of Old Galaxy S5s
I don't think making money was the goal of this project, more that they wanted proof of concept to show off.
bkcreate··on Ask HN: What are some low level jobs where you can work on side projects?
I already don't live in Silicon Valley so the pay difference wouldn't be an issue. Whats the process of finding jobs in the EU if I'm only fluent in English? Is it even possible?
bkcreate··on Ask HN: What are some low level jobs where you can work on side projects?
I was considering trying to get a job in one of the computer labs on campus in the spring semester at my University, kind of fits along the same lines. I was somewhat concerned that they might have some rights to your product because you developed it on their time, any experience with that?
bkcreate··on Ask HN: Other than crypto-mining, what are some other rewarded computations?
Upon continuing to research some uses, I found this website : http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php . It allows you to donate computing time to various scientific projects from around the world
