blaabjerg··on Why Wait? the Science Behind Procrastination
No matter how obvious and beaten-to-death a joke is, there's always someone who can't help themselves.
blaabjerg··on Discovery of 1,000-year-old Viking site in Canada could rewrite history
The current borders are irrelevant.

blaabjerg··on TensorFlow Implementation of Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Networks
I imagine advance knowledge of the timing is desirable if the project involves many volunteers going to a beach to herd turtles at night. Allows for planning, doesn't require anyone to monitor the webcam at night, etc.
blaabjerg··on Testosterone is the drug of the future

blaabjerg··on A Photographer Who Tinkers with Time
Indeed, rails. Subway rails in fact. Subway rails with a subway train riding on them :)
blaabjerg··on A Photographer Who Tinkers with Time
Fascinating. Here's a talk in which he goes into some background on the technology and process behind some of his work: http://vimeo.com/78667444
blaabjerg··on Show HN: Facebook Page Unliker
It seems it automatically goes to the next page (and scrolls about 1/3 down the page) once I scroll to the bottom? And there's no way to go back to the previous page?

Some usability issues, but overall a nice idea. I like the chronological sorting.

blaabjerg··on Magnus Carlsen Repeats at World Chess Championship
How so?
blaabjerg··on Magnus Carlsen Repeats at World Chess Championship
2013/2014 was an exception. WCC has been held every other year for the last few years, and it will return to that now. Honestly I'm not quite sure why they decided to arrange the 2013 WCC in the first place.

Every other year makes a lot of sense for different reasons, though. It allows the champion to be more active outside of the championship (not just prepare for the next one all the time), it allows for a proper candidates cycle, it makes it easier to find venues/sponsors, etc.

blaabjerg··on Liberia signs 'transformational' deal to stem deforestation
Isn't that enough? Highly biodiverse environments like tropical rainforests are treasure troves of thousands of fascinating species that we don't know much about yet. No doubt we still have a lot to learn from these environments.
blaabjerg··on Liberia signs 'transformational' deal to stem deforestation
It's not necessarily as simple as calling the police in Liberia. Corruption levels there are significantly higher than they are in Denmark. What if the logger pays the policeman to do nothing about it?

Enforcement is definitely going to be a challenge, but hopefully they have a good plan in place.

blaabjerg··on Liberia signs 'transformational' deal to stem deforestation
CO2 isn't the only issue, of course. Biodiversity is another good reason to preserve the rainforests, and algae can't make up for that.
blaabjerg··on Liberia signs 'transformational' deal to stem deforestation
Did you read the article? It's not just a lump sum cash payment for a promise. A couple of relevant quotes from the article:

> Under the terms of the agreement, Norway will help Liberia to initially build up the capacity to monitor and police the forests.

> Liberia will refrain from issuing any new logging concessions until all existing ones have been reviewed by an independent body.

> Ultimately the Norwegians will pay for results, with independent verification that trees remain standing.

blaabjerg··on Liberia signs 'transformational' deal to stem deforestation
They aren't just arrogantly trying to help an African nation, they have an interest in trying to preserve the rainforest and its biodiversity. It's quid pro quo.
blaabjerg··on Programmers are hipster librarians
Indeed. Here's his story:

blaabjerg··on Amazon releases new Kindle products
I've never owned a Kindle before, but I want one and I can't decide if I should go for the standard Kindle or the Voyage. What are your thoughts, is the upgrade worth it on a tight student budget?

I'd be upgrading from paper books, so I'm not entirely sold on the idea that I particularly need a front light. Is the readability significantly better even in a well-lit room?

blaabjerg··on Amazon releases new Kindle products
I'm the opposite, I can't really imagine needing the light very often. A Kindle without a light should be about as readable as a book without a built-in light, and I rarely find myself in a situation where I can't read a book for lack of light.

It might be useful if I'm out camping or if I share a hotel room with someone who wants to sleep while I read, but most of the time I have a light source available.

blaabjerg··on Lost Franklin expedition ship found in the Arctic
> Lastly, I'd say that it's influenced by Amundsen taking almost the exact same route as Scott had previously announced.

Did Scott end up changing his route after the announcement? Because I seem to recall they started several hundred kilometers apart.

blaabjerg··on LSD microdosing: a randomized, blind self-experiment
No it isn't. It's a waste of time if you're curious about the effects of a full dose of LSD or want a trip, but that's not the purpose here.

Did you read even the first sentence of the article?

blaabjerg··on Thorium nuclear reactor trial begins in Norway
Norway has a disproportional chunk of the world's known Thorium reserves as well. It seems Slartibartfast rigged the energy lottery in their favor.
blaabjerg··on Foundations of Computer Science
Here's the Prerequisites section:

Students taking courses based on this book have ranged from first-year undergraduates to graduate students. We assume only that students have had a solid course in programming. They should be familiar with the programming language ANSI C to use this edition. In particular, we expect students to be comfortable with C constructs such as recursive functions, structures, pointers, and operators involving pointers and structures such as dot, ->, and &.

blaabjerg··on How to know when someone is in trouble in the water
Knocking someone unconscious while swimming sounds difficult. I have a hard time imagining a situation where your energy is best spent punching the drowning person rather than trying to drag them ashore.
blaabjerg··on We were wrong
Maybe I'm a horrible person, but I don't think taking someone's hand and placing it on your dick is such a horrible, disgusting thing to do when you're in a situation like the one described in that post.

Keep in mind that in the original post it only happens after dating, kissing, fondling and fingering without protest. At that point, if you describe the next step between two consenting adults out of context it's going to sound "rapey".

blaabjerg··on Secret to Prism program: Even bigger data seizure
Without thinking a whole lot about it I had assumed prisms were used in the optical splitters/couplers central to the program. That doesn't seem to be the case.
blaabjerg··on Norwegian lawyer had visa withdrawn after private chat with client on Facebook
To be fair, being able to understand Facebook's TOS is not sufficient to be able to set up and use a properly encrypted communications channel. Not everyone is as tech savvy as you are.
blaabjerg··on Sweden warrantlessly wiretaps all Internet traffic crossing its borders
But the encrypted parts would be safe from eavesdropping even if hosted in Sweden, no? If that's the case, hosting it in Finland makes zero difference apart from political pressure.
blaabjerg··on A Story of Surveillance (2007)
He was already retired when that article was written.
blaabjerg··on Opera 15 Preview for Windows and Mac with Chromium Engine Released
That sounds like a bug. "Received" is supposed to be like "all [received] mail", both read and unread. Works like a charm on 12.15.
blaabjerg··on Opera 15 Preview for Windows and Mac with Chromium Engine Released
What makes you think they intend to get all the features we want back in? I hope you're right, but I haven't seen anything to indicate that's the case.
