I wish to engage in discourse with good faith and in line with the excellent HN guidelines. If you downvote me, flag me, etc, I would appreciate an explanation as to why. Cheers!

blamazon··on Have I been Flocked? – Check if your license plate is being watched
Some are installed on private property, and supply data to the property owner. Some are installed on public property, and supply data to the government.
blamazon··on Reminder to passengers ahead of move to 100% digital boarding passes
Use a different airline, the free market will take care of the rest!
blamazon··on Meow.camera
GIFs or screenshots from this are ubiquitous in meme culture in areas of the net I frequent. There's one I'm thinking of where the cat looks suspiciously at the camera.
blamazon··on Betty Crocker broke recipes by shrinking boxes
If you are in the US, generic breakfast cereals have come a long way. They come in larger boxes or bags and are basically identical. In the past they didn't have Cinnamon Toast Crunch figured out but there's been some kind of a breakthrough and they're a great copy now. Amazingly in some feat of copyright the one I now buy is called Cinnamon Crunch.
blamazon··on Chrome extension that replaces occurrences of 'the cloud' with 'my butt'
Someone at Amazon hilariously uploaded a job description that was filtered through this extension:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28869819

> Are you interested in building hyper-scale database services in my butt?

blamazon··on Kea 3.0, our first LTS version
I've tried a few times to switch to Kea in PFsense but it crashes my network fiercely.
blamazon··on Self-hosting your own media considered harmful according to YouTube
It's a constellation of tools that have the suffix "arr" - a winking nod to what a stereotypical pirate says, because they are commonly used for media piracy. Some examples are Radarr, Sonarr and Prowlarr, but there's lots of other ones. They all kind of fit together nicely into a stack that can be used to self host your own automatic media downloading and streaming platform.
blamazon··on Changes since congestion pricing started in New York
There is in Atlanta. An informal system of cash only mini buses without fixed routes and a focus on Spanish language.
blamazon··on An Alabama landline that keeps ringing
I know of an elevator that is also a ticketed access point to a stadium so the elevator operator also scans tickets and gives out wristbands. Very nice for wheeled accessibility.
blamazon··on Grim Fandango Puzzle Document (1996) [pdf]
I love the game and I'm nostalgic for when games were extremely difficult but for many the best way to experience Grim Fandango without such frustration might be by watching a commentary-free playthrough on youtube. I don't feel viewing the work is meaningfully diminished by not being the button clicker. Once one is familiar with the work there is a great developer commentary that is available on youtube also.
blamazon··on Gravel Map
One issue with gravelmap in my area is that some people don't post the best routes so they don't get crowded...
blamazon··on Portland's exploding Liberty Bell (2020)
I was hoping for a zany “trapped stress” material science explanation but this did not come to pass.
blamazon··on Airflow – Stream media files directly from macOS to AirPlay devices
Clearly the solution is either UUIDs for every product or Fulfilment By Amazon style randomly generated brand names like UGRTRPY.
blamazon··on EV maker Canoo, once worth $2.4B, files for bankruptcy
> The move (and forced relocation of employees) was likely a way to force attrition, since it was followed fairly quickly with layoffs elsewhere.

You might expand the full title to "After move interpreted by experts as likely a way to force attrition" to explain the relevance :)

blamazon··on Caltrain's electric fleet more efficient than expected
It's also how Scotland ended up harnessing their wind power, much to the consternation of one American capitalist...
blamazon··on WTF Happened in 1971? (2019)
Start of the unix epoch obviously.

I also like the ISO standardization of shipping containers explanation.

blamazon··on My second year without a job
I didn't notice a difference personally during a long unemployment stint. Not being employed lends a lot of free time to focus on self development and to be an interesting person which is beneficial to dating. Also, an unemployed partner can do a lot of cooking and cleaning. I used large chunks of my time to plan and create elaborate meals for working partners and keep co-living spaces spotless and organized. This is substantially more challenging for me personally to do with full time employment.
blamazon··on How can this 6 axis robot have a static accuracy of 0.05 mm? (2021) [video]
This doesn't address your (valid) systemic concerns, but on efficiency the way I like to use links like this is by adding them to a queue for later, then, if I have an opportunity to play them while doing the dishes or commuting or just feeling like watching a television I play them back, usually at higher speed of playback than 1.0. If I'm just sitting on the couch actively watching I'll read ahead in the transcript and skip ahead if I feel like it.
blamazon··on We're excited about our new roundabout
The article explains why they made the decision not to do a traditional dog-bone interchange with two circular roundabouts. Namely, there were right of way limitations and a need to incorporate heavy farm trucks making a left turn. So, they ended up with basically 1.5 roundabouts which represents a simplification over the dog bone.
blamazon··on Studies suggest a drug-free nasal spray could ward off respiratory infections
I'm busy so I didn't read the paper - is there a reason to use neosporin instead of petroleum jelly? In addition to your concern, many people are actively allergic to the ingredients in neosporin.
blamazon··on GM electric vehicles can now access Tesla Superchargers
EVs are often festooned with cameras which is a disincentive to opportunistic crime. At fast charging stations there's usually other people sitting in their cars which is another disincentive.
blamazon··on Boom Supersonic's XB-1 prototype aces 2nd test flight
2 is pretty easy to explain in my opinion. It's not hard to find people who are passionate about aeronautics who want to build a radical new product, rather than be cog number 13482 in the machine of Airbus making fixtures for testing wing spars or whatever, but there aren't many opportunities to actually do that because the cost barrier is so high. But that rolls around to how is 1 possible, so I see your point there.
blamazon··on Adding a USB port to the ThinkPad X1 Nano (the hard way)
This solution is a clean one module plug and play solution, that seems to be the justification for not doing a kludgier hack like that.
blamazon··on Oklahoma Stakes Its Claim to the Tallest Building in the U.S.
FYI, BOK tower is in Tulsa, not OKC. It is a bit strange to look at it in person with the WTC connection.
blamazon··on Things the guys who stole my phone have texted me to try to get me to unlock it
> Apple’s own “helpful” iMessage feature was sort of fooled: the auto-filled contact name said “Maybe: Apple Pay.” Maybe!

This seems problematic? In article screenshot shows that it pulled in a misleading contact photo as well. I know they also have a separate UI color scheme for business messaging that is meant to address phishing and trust but perhaps they should not auto suggest contacts containing the word Apple.

blamazon··on Tesla uses new Texas law to avoid Austin's environmental regulations
Additionally, on my mobile the page was almost unusable. Here is a key bit:

> The company's ability to deannex from the city comes after Senate Bill 2038 passed last year.

blamazon··on What if dreaming is the whole point of sleep?
> The rational, executive network in the brain is switched off, and the imaginative, visual and emotional parts are dialled way up. As a result, the dreaming mind is given free rein in a way that has no parallel in our waking lives. We couldn’t think this way when we are awake even if we tried.

I read this and felt compelled to say this reminds me of how psychedelics like LSD and psilocybin work :)

blamazon··on The Presidential Nuclear "Football" from Eisenhower to George W. Bush
I love this genre! Here's another one that I saw on HN recently:

https://www.doscher.com/recovery-kit-version-2/

blamazon··on The Presidential Nuclear "Football" from Eisenhower to George W. Bush
I like nuclear satchel, myself.
blamazon··on YouTube cracking down even harder to punish user for skipping ads
I just pay because I already collude with hundreds, possibly thousands of ethically dubious companies every day.

I'd rather pay google with my money than my data or eyeballs anyway. (Not that paying for YouTube actually helps much with this angle... but at least it kinda sorta looks like the transaction I want. Money for services.)
