blaufast··on Postgres 19 is late because so many more bugs are being found now
what are the nuts and bolts of how you're doing this? which tools have you found helpful? any advice for people who'd also like to do this?
blaufast··on California closed the Montana license plate loophole
California is closing a loophole that allows wealthy people to evade taxes.

Many of the reactions to this are indignant, as if people should be allowed to evade taxes when then have fancy cars. My top level comment attempts to point how our culture seems to defend illegal, immoral, and antisocial behavior when it surrounds cars.

California's "You actually have to pay what everybody else is paying" is a very fair, prosocial stance

blaufast··on California closed the Montana license plate loophole
Thank you California

Our willingness as a society to tolerate the expense, danger, and health issues brought by extensive car use will be looked back on with bewilderment. You can start to see the insanity when a 'classic' car drives by. It's noisy, heavy, dangerous, and smelly. It's allowed to noticeably pollute any area it passes through. We've made progress, but that level of noise, danger, and pollution is how every car on your street used to be.

Car culture has a unique flavor of regressive entitlement. Every bit of societal and legislative progress that has made cars cleaner and safer has been fought tooth and nail by this group.

Our government created a vast, expensive, open to use resource in roads and infrastructure, offers minimal restrictions an licensing for its use, barely enforces existing safety laws, and the combustion crowd shows outrage at the loss of their illegal activities.

I wish our culture was less tolerant of this behavior. It is a tiny percentage that costs the rest of us constantly. Sometimes its a motorcycle club, others it just rich people shucking the social contract. I'm looking forward to the last Harley getting recycled.

The frontier labs' work is more akin to discovery than artistic expression. An art piece is valued for its uniqueness and individuality, but AI is valued for verifiable correctness. Discovery cannot be unseen and is easily replicable. I think the AI labs are in a tough situation because their work is more similar to fundamental scientific discovery than say, a unique painting or song.

Mendel doesn't get a cut every time somebody uses the principles of heritability he discovered, and Einstein's family aren't getting royalties if you compute relative speeds. I think the frontier labs should expect to be treated more like scientists than artists in this regard.

blaufast··on Court filings allege Meta downplayed risks to children and misled the public
So much of this audience already knows the job is to collect comprehensive analytics and never run the analyses on your product’s externalities.

to be obvious enough to downplay, it must be impossible to miss while looking the other way. To be impossible to miss, it must be inextricably linked to the profits.

blaufast··on Report: Tim Cook could step down as Apple CEO 'as soon as next year'
Almost every top comment is negative. This negativity about apple has existed since the 90s.

Apple has been the most profitable example of betting against the herd for the last 20 years. And possibly the easiest if you’re willing to look at the world plainly. I’m glad to see the herd hasn’t changed and I have plenty of gains left.

blaufast··on Cheap DIY solar fence design
I DIYd this with permits and interconnect in the SF Bay Area. I’ve had no power bill for years now, and I have two hot tubs.

Panels and enphase on Craigslist are so cheap you don’t have to worry about it. Max out what you’re allowed with your main electrical panel size and you’ll never regret it. Don’t even consider doing less than the maximum. You will never meet anybody who believes they added enough solar after a year of ownership

blaufast··on Lifelong Disadvantage: How Socioeconomics Affect Brain Function
It’s not a disguise. Think of it as time travel to 100 years ago. After you learn to fit in, the old part is alive and well in there still. You from both times in the same body and mind.
blaufast··on Lifelong Disadvantage: How Socioeconomics Affect Brain Function
This is very well put.

Values, the roots, are so different they bear different fruit. Learning the new fruit and reverse engineering its roots you become aware of what most never do. You are a fish that discovers water.

Scarcity and abundance are so different that unless you’ve experienced both you really will not understand.

Becoming a SWE changed all of this for me and I’ve noticed the culture, especially in FAANG is so wealthy.

blaufast··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture
I suspect a very large number of people are too smart to speak up, but also resentful of the forces that work to prevent actual nuanced dialogue. That's certainly the sentiment in my bubble.

As somebody who isn't fond of the idea of an ethnostate and sees atrocities coming from all of the actors here, I don't feel comfortable speaking up due to the lack of nuance in public forums.

blaufast··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture

Same. Then reminds me that the creation of the United States was based on strategic, coordinated genocide and I feel even worse.

blaufast··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture
You feel suspicious that the content may be misleading because of the bias from the newsroom?
blaufast··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture
I think HN readers have a strong desire to speak the inconvenient or untouchable topics. I think this is a healthy impulse.

This topic is hard because so many commenters are triggered by it, for lack of a better word.

Could AI help here? What if a comment was given an automatic 'emotional temperature' score? We might be able to address the fact that a lot of the comments will be basically pure emotion, and we can discuss the emotions instead of being distracted by the content.

blaufast··on Hired by Google as L4 but rejected by top colleges
And yes, racism, but a more pedestrian sense than a true sense. Any wealthy arab or prestigious african has access to these places, just not normal ones.

And these colleges looooove it this happens. Their numbers get better and they didn't have to do anything that compromises their design philosophy.

And having interviewed people for much less prestigious 'diversity' programs, I can't help but relate. The African diplomat's son with an excellent international education interviews well and gives your organization a future 'success' story.

blaufast··on Hired by Google as L4 but rejected by top colleges
Its because he's not rich.

I don't understand why this is not more widely understood. These schools are not for meritocracy. Schools with sports teams fill much of the incoming class with athletes before they even consider an application, and then they start picking from places and people who'll keep their prestige reciprocally high. The son of a foreign dictator would never attend the school that produced the only human with two unshared nobel prizes, because that's not the game they're playing.

And when they pick, they're starting with schools the admissions officers have relationships with (rich people schoools) that require rich people middle schools to attend, etc...

The chain starts in childhood, you don't just take a bunch of tests available to the public.

I've had friends whose job it was to interview kindergarteners for access to their exclusive schools. Others had to deal with two sets of parents suing each other over one's access to that school.

And before you say this is conspiratorial, I've verified this with admissions people and deans from these places.

blaufast··on A Case Study on the Uber Alumni Network
I had lunch with an early Uber employee (male) who told me 'wokeness killed uber'. He said the famous cultural issues "weren't real", an if TK hadn't been ousted they'd have destroyed Lyft completely in a few months.

A couple of months before the self driving car killed a pedestrian in Arizona, a drunk engineer from that team told me 'everybody is lying on their human intervention reports to the state, that's just how the sausage is made'

Late Uber produces seriously impressive technology and mature, reliable services. Early Uber was so errr.. problematic... that I'd be hesitant to wear that as a badge.

blaufast··on Launch HN: Noya (YC W21) – Direct air capture of CO2 using cooling towers
YSK those 'kill switches' just have to be abandoned by their host to stop working. They create a huge evolutionary pressure for this.
blaufast··on Launch HN: Noya (YC W21) – Direct air capture of CO2 using cooling towers
Cyanobacteria cultivation is an old idea[1] and is limited by more than just phage. I did the math on carbon removal in a controlled environment somewhere like Nevada, and it could contribute to climate solutions. If Church is suggesting we release GMO cyanobacteria into the ocean, that is a whole separate category of idea, somewhere between Guam's Brown Tree Snakes and Ice Nine. If it succeeds, we will introduce a new kind of ocean trash - an organism with no predators. But phage is likely just mutate anyway. IDK how close you've been to Church or his orbit, but most of his ideas are mostly clickbait.

In the case this one isn't, the release of genetic modifications into the wild will be a debt our children have to pay, the way we are paying for our ancestors use of CO2.

blaufast··on Show HN: ORM for TypeScript with no query-builder, supporting full SQL queries
I think its funny that 'opinionated' could be considered a virtue. I'm imagining a charity that uses 'opinionated' to describe itself, or even worse, a person. Even Apple, a brand famous for its strong design stances, does not use that word as a description of its values.
