I doubt it (even though I run a dev shop w/ Vietnam based engineers). US companies will continue hiring US based engineers. And when Covid is over people will go to the office again.
Also wanted to add in developed countries (and by corollary, big cities) it is very hard to make friends once you are an adult. When I lived in Vietnam it is 10x easier to date/make friends/get involved in the local community (vs NYC,LA or SF)
East/West can work well as well. I have a team in Vietnam with USA clients and we just do 1h overlap per day. Too many meetings may not be a good thing.
I am here in Vietnam (and was in California a few months ago) and the difference is day and night. Lockdown is super strict here. Everyone wears mask (even when it is only a few cases out of millions). It is a 21 day mandatory quarantine (if you get approved to get in). The results speak for itself.
It depends on how you manage the workload I think. I am based in California (and so is my client) and we have a team in Hanoi, Vietnam. We get a lot done as many tasks are done asynchronously. Plus we can deploy when the users in US are sleeping :)
A few years ago I had to commute from Orange county to Manhattan Beach. It takes 1 hour to get to the office (leaving at 5:15am in the morning) and 1.5 hour to get home (leaving at 4pm). By the time I got home I felt dead. It was a 30 mile trip. So to me the long commute is what makes WFH convincing.
Any tech dev/company in Bay Area want to set up shop in Vietnam? And live a more balanced life (in terms of dating, traveling, eating good food, etc)? I can help be your local point of contact.
I am in LA and a friend tells me he can't hire good in house engineers locally. When I suggest Vietnam/etc he indeed mentioned tradeoffs regarding timeshift/culture. I guess you can't have it both ways.
Yeah I know a bunch of QA companies in Vietnam. How did your company find them? I am Vietnamese American myself and have spent a lot of time in the region. It is an amazing place w/ a hungry yet educated youth population, great food, beautiful beaches and quite fast internet. Surprised not many American companies heading there to recruit.
Anyone interested in Vietnam? I spent tons of time there (Ho Chi Minh city and Hanoi) recruiting Vietnamese software developers recently for my own projects and am seriously thinking of parlaying that skillset into helping US companies setting up in house engineering sites there.
Where do you go to get the box made? What is its cost? And what is shipping cost (for ex within GA) per box? Does shipping cost increase by weight too?
anyone knows if there is a business need for human to train/label data? I have been thinking of going to a place w/ cheap labor cost (perhaps Vietnam) and set up an operation like this.
I did that after saving enough money in Silicon Valley back in 2008. I lived on the top floor. It was called USA Books and was the 1st English only bookstore in Vietnam. Naturally it was tech heavy http://wordhcmc.com/news-latest/in-the-papers/usa-books. Every month we d host a get together and do a storytelling event like the Moth. Good times :)
anyone has experience with remittance from US to countries that don't have a local bitcoin exchange? How would it work in such case since the receiver can't convert the money to the local currency?
