boomerango··on A New Mode of Cancer Treatment
Whoever is running the simulation is getting bored.

Wild fires, what is sure to be a historic hurricane season, floods, war, and a technological leap.

boomerango··on Three Companies Impersonated Millions to Influence Internet Policy
Puts on conspiracy hat

What if killing net neutrality was a given, but the administration wanted the appearance of due process…

God, I’ve grown jaded.

boomerango··on Seinfeld Transcripts
Thank you for sharing this - you made my morning.
boomerango··on Meta is about to start its next round of layoffs
“Hey this guy just updated his linked-in for the first time in two years!”
boomerango··on America’s banks are missing hundreds of billions of dollars
Exactly. The subtext to this clip is that she cannot do what the congressman is acting without an act of congress, and he should know that. It’s well executed grandstanding.
boomerango··on America’s banks are missing hundreds of billions of dollars
As I understand it, the piece you are missing is that she legally/procedurally cannot guarantee depositors prior to a bankruptcy - that would require an act of congress. The congressman know this as well, so it’s just grandstanding.
boomerango··on The gap between how old you are and how old you think you are
Home improvement catch 22 - damned if the drywall goes unpatched, damned if I spend an hour driving to the hardware store and fixing it, away from the kids.
boomerango··on Cruel optimism and lazy pessimism
You made me laugh pretty hard. Re-reading this I’m more disturbed that I framed it as a potentially gratifying task.
boomerango··on Cruel optimism and lazy pessimism
I try not to attack big problems head on. Instead I ask myself, what can I change in my daily habits that will eventually, erode the dragon away? If the dragon is in a cave and I can dump a bucket of water in there every day, eventually the thing will fly away or drown.
boomerango··on Cruel optimism and lazy pessimism
I think the mistake is viewing the task as a dragon that must be slayed rather than 10,000 hamsters which need be stomped on in 10,000 days. If we can reframe our large problems into a sequence of small (and potentially even gratifying!) tasks, life becomes easier.

If you are interested in learning more about the space, look into Chainlink oracles.
boomerango··on Binance's books are a black box, filings show, as it tries to rally confidence
A slight clarification: Binance owned a 15% stake in FTX and sold it back to FTX for FTT.
boomerango··on ‘Perpetual broths’ that simmer for decades
There is fond (which can also burn) and then there is charred debris. The former adds umami, the latter tastes like cigar ash.
boomerango··on SBF Written Testimony Notes 12/12/2022
All I could think as I read his statement:

“ Mr. Madison, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”

And if you can’t blind them with your brilliance, baffle them with your bullshit
boomerango··on My bike was stolen (2017)
The frustrating thing is that if the police even occasionally stung bike thieves, theft would likely decrease disproportionately. Something about not having total impunity…
boomerango··on San Francisco considers allowing law enforcement robots to use lethal force
Just look at Singapore.

Or, closer to home, examine theft rates in cities which recently raised the grand larceny threshold (looking at you Oregon and Washington…) and the explosion of misdemeanor theft. My employer (a fortune 100 retailer) is actively exploring breaking leases as shrink rates have approached 50% in some locations.

boomerango··on Apple Rankings
It’s doubly strange when you realize there’s basically a single species of banana that we all eat.
boomerango··on The Death of a Statesman
One note - CZ has withdrawn its offer to purchase FTX
boomerango··on Binance to acquire FTX
Moreover, you are assuming no one else decides to sell based… one could argue publicizing their plans was meant to encourage just that…
boomerango··on Binance to acquire FTX
Alternatively FTX was confident they could make the purchase given time, but did not have the funds on hand.

I’m not saying whatever that is is a great invention but

Alternating current… Computers… Smartphones… The internet…

boomerango··on Talking to strangers can make us smarter?
As a transplant from the Midwest to the North East, anecdotally, this matches my experience. Even after many years and friends, I still feel an outsider here. My wife and I often lament it. There is no sense of community to speak of, just thousands of ships passing in the dark.
