bootloop··on Ambient: The Multiplayer Game Engine
This is what I didn't understand about Google Stadia. I thought they will make gaming bigger in Youtube and automatically show a "play now" button next to the video. Maybe even the possibility to join the game of the streamer. It would work in an instant without download.

And because you have control over the game you can give everyone a hour or so free demo time, only then they need an abo.

bootloop··on Steam now allows you to copy games over a local network to another PC
Steam had an option to recover a game from a backup for a long time. If you really needed this you knew about it. This new feature seems to just save a few clicks and the need for a shared drive / flash drive.

It still doesn't help me with games releasing a 20 GB patch every 7 days unfortunately.

bootloop··on Ask HN: What's more valuable: expert or broad knowledge in different areas?
I think you need the right company which values general and broad knowledge. There might not be so many positions which specifically look for such a person and so having some expert knowledge might come in handy from time to time when your general input is not what the team currently needs.

In my experience having some deep knowledge on a topic makes you a bit better situated on the market if you don't have a strong network, but having broad knowledge allows you to have impact on a greater scale and you might value that more.

bootloop··on Tell HN: Impact of using 1 or 2 sticks of DDR5 on a 6800HX with 680M IG
Did you clock the RAM correctly? Enable XMP/EXPO? What timings and clocks is it running on?
bootloop··on AI-powered Bing Chat spills its secrets via prompt injection attack
Because changing the display / brand name only requires you to adapt a single sentence now if needed, all others can stay the same because they use the placeholder variable. I don't think it is really meant to be secret.
bootloop··on KiCad 7.0
I always used EAGLE for my PCB work in the past but just recently I started a new project, after many years not touching any PCB design, for which I need to make a PCB and gave KiCad a go.

Most of the things work fine but the managing of part libraries I found extremely confusing and not really intuitive: e.g. different library file formats for schematics and footprints or the standard libraries being located and hidden behind some PATH variables..

Regardless, I think it is a great piece of software and I am looking forward to make more use of it in the future!

bootloop··on What’s the data Waymo car collects driving around SF all day?
> and maybe most importantly is believed to be unnecessary since "humans drive with just their eyes"

Which I always found fascinating reasoning because clearly, humans can't drive with these two eyes alone. There is a lot of assumptions and guesswork going on which regularly ends in crashes. Increasing coverage to help would be great.

bootloop··on [dead]
First of all, this was in 2017. Also, these changes are not noop changes, like comments or similar. They clearly make the product better and that was the intention, so what's the issue? Yes, she choose a niche and stuck to it.

I don't agree with that tweet and I want to see their merged commits if they think they can do better.

bootloop··on What does it mean to trademark a color?
Don't want to defend any practice here. But this looks like two different things to me. Vantablack is a product (not just a color) which is exclusively licensed to the artist by the manufacturer. If someone comes up with it's own product reproducing the same results these can still can be bought and used for art (and given the wiki entry this happened).

Whereas in this article it appears to me that they trademarked the appearance of a color, resulting in other parties changing their recipe to not appear too similar, which I find a bit more problematic.

bootloop··on OpenJourney: Midjourney, but Open Source
Does it really, have you tried it or do you mean because of the documentation? Just skimmed through the code, haven't really seen anything related to uploading. Might not even be required.
bootloop··on Godot 4.0 beta 9 Released
Looking forward to 4.1 where we hopefully get mobile support for C# .NET 6. Then it will be ahead of Unity at least in terms of C# support given they don't plan to move to it before somewhere 2025. I haven't worked yet with Godot but once this comes around I will try to target our Unity code-base against Godot to see how it does.

But in any case I am happy that it is such an active project because we need the competition.

bootloop··on Ask HN: I have diagnosed ADHD and cannot work with Slack anymore – advice?
Does that have much of an impact on distribution? I don't think so. You still gonna have ones which are very good at their job, some are average and the rest is part of the long tail.

Edit: Also in context of the conversation above, what I wanted to suggest is that that information can still be very valuable to whoever reads it. Even if it comes from someone who is not a doctor.

bootloop··on Ask HN: I have diagnosed ADHD and cannot work with Slack anymore – advice?
If the quality of doctors follows the same distribution as that one of SW engineers, taking advice of a stranger might have a similar use as looking for answers on stack overflow. After all, they are all self-taught..
bootloop··on Ask HN: Developer abused “sign in with GitHub”?
You didn't and Github should not have banned you. Wheras it is correct that you "could have avoided this by not granting unnecessary permissions" to the site which it then abused in your behalf, it is not your responsibility to ensure the site uses it's access credentials in a non ToS variolating way. This whole comment section is classic victim shaming. GitHub should be responsible to ensure all sites they grant oauth integration do follow the rules. If not, individual accounts should not have to live with the consequences of that.

Google learned this too, that's why it is very hard to get access to certain oauth scopes. Making the product nearly impossible to use except for anything then identity. But that's how it is.

bootloop··on Tesla fan sites propagate fake news of chip joint venture, but why?
Might be a setup for a financial scam within China (so they can point to western sources to support their claim). So it doesn't need to convince us in the west as long as somebody who doesn't speak English well believes it there.
bootloop··on Employee gift ideas that make people feel bad
I don't necessarily think he should have been compensated based on the (theoretical) loss of money. He was employed after all. And properly someone else would haved saved the day early enough anyway.

But 25$ is quite an embarrassment. Nothing would have been better in that case.

bootloop··on We're moving on from Firebase
Realtime Database? No. Firestore however, scales as most GCP services do and is it's in-house built replacement.
bootloop··on What does it take to be a good programmer?
In companies of a certain size the differentiation between these (or similar titles) get more clear. In my opinion they are also strongly linked with experience (in certain areas).
bootloop··on Ask HN: Is it just me or Facebook is being bombarded by spam?
I think the algorithm is broken and it just shows all posts of liked sites.
bootloop··on Ask HN: Anyone working 4 day week here, as an employee?
Same salary then or also 20% less?
bootloop··on Why is solar more expensive in the U.S. than in other countries?
But some roofs are flat. Edit: Ok as mentioned maybe still not a solo job but for sure much less dangerous.
bootloop··on Why is solar more expensive in the U.S. than in other countries?
Apart of the labor, I am in the EU and in the offer I have got, the mounting for one panel (some weak metal parts) is the same as the costs of the panel itself. I find this a bit crazy given that all these panels will have the same angle and are mounted in a row. So instead of individual ones I can just weld two long pieces in a fixed angle and screw them on. And get the double amount of panels for the same price...
bootloop··on Developing Godot Projects with Neovim
It hardly can be considered for a serious commercial project without having a engine team already. But for hobbyist it might become a good choice and the popularity definitly helps.
bootloop··on The GPU shortage is over
> it is still profitable

> I do not pay for power

I guess you don't run your own solar farm so I assume someone else is paying that for you without knowing.

bootloop··on Unity is laying off hundreds of employees
Epic did nothing for indies before Unity3d distrusted their market. Before Unreal was a big player game engine with a high upfront cost.
bootloop··on It costs $110k to fully gear up in Diablo Immortal
True, but this in particular is a reference: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/do-you-guys-not-have-phones
bootloop··on My NDA is expired. It's worse than you know, AMA
I thought I will be able to guess it after reading this wall of text. But I wasn't, is it a person, is it the company?
bootloop··on How is the free firmware for the Raspberry progressing?
> Marcan42 dumped the keys from the VideoCore blob

Certainly only the public keys are part of the blob or not? Only the accessories would need the private key embedded to answer the challenge.

bootloop··on I hate what video games have become
This is absurd. So you also don't use any software products which are a) free to use or b) habe a free tier?
bootloop··on Tell HN: YouTube and how my wife lost 7 years of work
Some (big) creators store all related material and the videos themselves. Others get rid of everything once the video is finished and uploaded.

Edit: Of all my YT videos I wouldn't know where I have the sources stored although I never deliberately deleted them.
