boredinstapanda··on StreetComplete on iOS is now in public beta
Most of the time you can leave a note. Do you get an "Uh..." option?
boredinstapanda··on How a new DSL may survive in the era of LLMs
Digital Subscriber Line? Ah, Domain Specific Languages.

Sigh, so many acronyms.

boredinstapanda··on 32GB of DDR5 now costs $375 – AI shortage continues to squeeze PC building
Man, I remember my first 8MB cost over $400.
boredinstapanda··on Fire for You
This seems apropos given the currentstate if AI in society.

'“A tool.” Most tools come with safeguards or clear consequences for their misuse: GenAI has neither.'

boredinstapanda··on What we lost when we stopped letting kids leave the front yard
You might see if he would be OK with a flag on a stick attached to the back wheel.
boredinstapanda··on Niche Museums
I really liked the American Precision Museum in Windsor, Vermont when I went to visit. https://americanprecision.org/
boredinstapanda··on I didn't bring my son to a museum to look at screens
Seeing his description about the early visits when he was a child reminded me of the City Museum in St Louis.

Kid sized interactive art museum. A place I wish were around when I was grade school age.

boredinstapanda··on Building a DOOM-like multiplayer shooter in pure SQL
Reminds me of the text mode Doom before the ASCII mode video drivers.

I couldn't find the site after a quick search, maybe the wayback machine.

boredinstapanda··on Printing metal on glass with lasers [video]
Seems similar to vapor deposition, though probably it looks like particles rather than vaporization.
boredinstapanda··on Show HN: We open-sourced our compost monitoring tech
Do you know if anyone is writing a HomeAssistant integration for this?
boredinstapanda··on Seven things I wish I would not hear as an autist
Be careful he doesn't burn out. I did pretty early on because it took me a lot more effort to get some things done.
boredinstapanda··on Obsolete Command-Line Tools of Linux
I also am an avid screen user. There are a number of places where I need a serial console and TMUX basically says "we will not support serial connections ever".

screen is way better than the alternatives for what I want. I never got minicom to work as smoothly as screen. It's just so clunky.

boredinstapanda··on The brutal business practices of Amazon
That seems to reason. Unless you buy all your stuff at Walmart online, you have to go in and see the people working and their working conditions.

Amazon, you only see the checkout page. It makes it much easier to ignore the problems.

I guess they're not talking about Quantum Vibe webcomic: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/QuantumVib...
boredinstapanda··on There has never been a better time to game on Linux
One thing I didn't see mentioned here (or the article) that I discovered recently is the "Heroic" game launcher that works in Linux. It lets you start and run GOG and Epic games on Linux. GOG has some Linux stuff, but Epic is allergic to anything but Windows.

It looks like Heroic sets up your wine environment for each game.

I've only installed one game from that, but it seems to work pretty well. Very slick too.

boredinstapanda··on Switch off bad TV settings
It's a shame no one makes a control board for TV screens like you can often find for old screens like from digital photo frames.
boredinstapanda··on The Distribution of Users’ Computer Skills: Worse Than You Think (2016)
I really think that while, interfaces are less complex these days, they're much more inscrutable, especially with the advent of flat interfaces. You can't tell what's a control or action item or not anymore.
