boriskourt··on Show HN: A guided 3D Leonardo da Vinci museum, built in code
Exactly this, it’s something that keeps being thrown around for new project ideas in cultural heritage for decades. And there is a metric ton of prior art. But there is no clear value proposition, and if for some reason someone pushes it through it sits unused for a few months or years and gets sunset after someone forgets it exists.

Great tech demo. These projects need demand and drive from the public, and there isn’t any. It’s also missing the deeper motivations of why people visit museums and cultural institutions.

boriskourt··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
I don't think I've seen that many similar top level comments as there are under helle253's thread. Is it just me or something is off?
boriskourt··on Muse Code and Muse Spark 1.2
Meta has a worse track record and major baggage from their main product. Its a super different surface area for what their incentives are.
boriskourt··on The End of an Era
"But then I have to remind myself that I don’t sound like AI, it sounds like me. I’ve been em-dashing and comma-splicing up a motherfucking storm these past two decades. It was fun then, and it’s fun now."

From the source.

boriskourt··on The AV2 Video Standard Has Released (Final v1.0 Specification)
One of the biggest gains of having dedicated hardware is that the computation doesn’t happen on the general hardware.

This is what makes it viable on mobile devices where system responsiveness and power efficiency are high priority.

Generally these hardware decoders haven’t been retoolalble.

I wish I had a chance to open source. So much of it was done in mad hacking sessions to glue things that were never supposed to work together. Or contain all the secret sauce for one work or another. Maybe the next one!
boriskourt··on Official Clojure Documentary page with Video, Shownotes, and Links
Thank you! I’ve managed to shoehorn Clojure into everything from 3D model generation to VR networking servers for installations :D It makes so many things easier to reason about!
boriskourt··on Official Clojure Documentary page with Video, Shownotes, and Links
I’ve been using Clojure since 2013, and can say that it has been an enormous positive force in my life. I’ve been a very unorthodox user, most of my artworks were built using Clojure in some way. But I’ve also worked in industry, and there I think Clojure helped me avoid burnout on more than one occasion. Especially when running a startup built half on it :)

It’s also been a privilege to participate in the community. From Clojure west to the Conj, to the online discussions. Huge thanks to everyone that’s made this possible over the decades.

If we can set a legal precedent then this can cascade into policy, or an enforceable standard much faster.

Super worth a watch. Lots of technical tidbits also.
boriskourt··on Clojure: The Documentary, official trailer [video]
I am so glad that this has been made! And happy that it features so many familiar faces from the last two decades of Clojure. There is a lot more to a programming language than just the code committed.
boriskourt··on How the AI Bubble Bursts
> The cost to serve tokens is absolutely profitable today and that’s been true for at least a year.

> For the data center build outs, demand for tokens is still exceeding supply.

Can you provide any numbers for this?

boriskourt··on How and why to take a logarithm of an image [video]
I've seen most! Highlighting this one out of them all. Exemplary! : D
boriskourt··on How and why to take a logarithm of an image [video]
This video is an absolute tour de force of communicating a complex concept.
boriskourt··on Boy I was wrong about the Fediverse
Then I don’t really care about them if they don’t want to hang out with me. It works as intended.
boriskourt··on Boy I was wrong about the Fediverse
I’ve had an awesome experience the last five years running instances for me and friends. So many nice interactions. I recommend running an instance for people you know well. It can still connect to everyone else, but you have your own little corner to feel more connected in.
boriskourt··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
Nice starting storage bump

MacBook Pro with M5 Pro now comes standard with 1TB of storage, while MacBook Pro with M5 Max now comes standard with 2TB. And the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 now comes standard with 1TB of storage.

boriskourt··on Loops is a federated, open-source TikTok
How is this a problem in your opinion?
boriskourt··on Loops is a federated, open-source TikTok
This comes up here and there to discredit the developer but having followed all the drama for many years now I just want to add that Dansup has apologized multiple times, and has been far more open about his process. His communication has also changed for the better over the last two years especially. Its not easy being human, and I think its a good sign to see that he takes this seriously.
boriskourt··on Loops is a federated, open-source TikTok
yes, a lot of the issues around this come because of the lack of dignity.
boriskourt··on Loops is a federated, open-source TikTok
TikTok has ~1.59 billion global active users, if you go to Cambodia you will have a hard time not seeing it in the wild. It is painful that this is still seen as some teen trend.

People enjoy short form video, people should be able to enjoy things they like with dignity, which is in extremely short supply on algorithm and advert driven social media.

Loops is nice because it isn't algorithm oriented. You can follow folks and just see their things if you like, or see whats on the instance.

Loops doesn't need to 'slay tiktok' Loops just needs to grow organically and support the niches that feel like using it, and it can take the time to do that at any pace. Its success is not determined by user numbers or series rounds.

I don't like to produce short form video, but its been nice to now follow a few people on Loops from Mastodon. Its nice that the Fediverse allows multiple forms of expression.

boriskourt··on Penpot: The Open-Source Figma
Looking forward to the new rendering engine. Very exciting work!
boriskourt··on Penpot: The Open-Source Figma
https://penpot.app/ you don't have to download it at all :)
boriskourt··on Penpot: The Open-Source Figma
Figma has set an expectation for designers that their projects support multi-user editing by default and are available to clients, teammates and stakeholders without having to install anything. Its hard to go against that kind of productivity in any org.

Penpot provides the same.

boriskourt··on Penpot: The Open-Source Figma
I am not sure what you are really asking here. They have almost 20k commits of frontend and server code [0] over half a decade of development. What would a desktop version of this look like outside of a bundled Tauri/Electron wrapper?

https://pitch.com/ is also a huge Clojure visual app. They build UIX [0] which is a really nice interface to React.

boriskourt··on Penpot: The Open-Source Figma
Also, when it comes to UI elements this is my go to vector editor. Keeps things simple, has good ways of handling units and layout. A pleasure designing custom icons, or quick graphical elements. Plus a great export system to keep things organized.

There are many things you can do besides full app flows, it doesn't dictate how you use it. Really reminds me of early Sketch and how productive I was with it. Its wild that this is open source.
