bowsamic··on Why my Asus laptop kept rebooting after sleep and how to fix it
Wow, as a MacBook user for the last decade I had thought the rest of technology would have caught up by now with such a basic feature. Embarrassing
bowsamic··on '500-hour' Order of the Sinking Star is as complex and exhausting as it sounds
No, I think they are, I agree with him
bowsamic··on '500-hour' Order of the Sinking Star is as complex and exhausting as it sounds
No, but I agree with Jon Blow

In this case it’s more like 600 sudoku that introduce and teach new methods without needing an external guide, and that is great for me

He said that he foresees the effort to deal with open source community will be huge so I think he’s apprehensive of that effort
bowsamic··on '500-hour' Order of the Sinking Star is as complex and exhausting as it sounds
I think it’s absolutely incredible. Sure maybe it’s exhausting but that’s a good thing, it means the puzzles are challenging
bowsamic··on I know why the mathematicians weep
Huh??
bowsamic··on I know why the mathematicians weep
Handle what situation? Why would people who love me ever replace me with a robot? It’s a random posed situation that no one discussed and doesn’t make any sense lol
bowsamic··on I know why the mathematicians weep
I’m fully STEM: software developer with a physics PhD with a mechanical engineer wife, but this is certainly just deserts for the STEM people, who mocked the humanities and especially philosophy for centuries (literally, this started back with Kant even) for spending time thinking about these questions. STEM people are not at all spiritually prepared for it, and this is the main disappointment for me. I spent many years struggling with publish or perish in physics but all those around me claimed they simply loved doing physics and that that’s what mattered. Now as soon as their exclusive ability to give results is slightly threatened the love of physics/maths/coding is no longer spoken about. I get maybe they weren’t the same people, but I thought more people loved the process than it seems today. If anything these new developments make it even clearer for me what I love about this kind of work. I’m so happy it has made me not have to defend based on results, a razor sharp contrast that makes it so clear really why humans do things
bowsamic··on I know why the mathematicians weep
Anyone who would replace me with a robot never loved me anyway. If that happened I would go and seek out the humans who really do care, and take solace in the fact that Christ will always love me
bowsamic··on I know why the mathematicians weep
I have little sympathy, since I think it is a result of many decades of complacency when it comes to thinking about why want to people do what they do and instead just enjoying being the ones with the results and money. People who love the process and see the human as inherently valuable won't have a problem. I'm more shocked that there are so many brilliant people who are so results-oriented and don't even have a concept of value outside of that. I'm kind of disgusted by the tears actually
bowsamic··on Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet
It depends on the country. For the last few months here in Germany Amazon has been having major shipping issues
bowsamic··on Iosevka is an open-source, sans-serif and slab-serif monospace font
I use Commit Mono, which is basically a free version of Berkeley Mono
bowsamic··on Iosevka is an open-source, sans-serif and slab-serif, monospace font
I felt like my eyes hurt when I tried this font. It's hard for me to switch away from the standard width monospace fonts. At the moment I use Commit Mono. Extra horizontal space might be nice but it's not worth risking any discomfort

bowsamic··on Redesigning source control at Anthropic
No it doesn’t, it doesn’t even talk about what they’re building
bowsamic··on Redesigning source control at Anthropic
Christ is exactly what we need right now (as always)
bowsamic··on Redesigning source control at Anthropic
The funny part is, no one is making any money off this either. Traditionally we’d say that profitability is not necessarily an indicator of real value for humanity, but with LLMs we don’t even have profitability! The only people making more money here are manufacturers like Nvidia and data centre companies
bowsamic··on Redesigning source control at Anthropic
But the revenue is just because they’re selling at a huge loss and are being allowed to do so because lots of stupid investors are betting that one day they won’t be selling at a loss. That’s not economic growth. Anyone can have revenue selling diamonds for a penny
bowsamic··on The baffling intelligence of a single cell (2024)
Really? Cells put forward their own definition? So you think they are conscious, thinking beings?
bowsamic··on Were software engineers blue-collar workers all along?
Well you’re just saying here you don’t care about tech debt or software quality. Of course lines of code is relevant, it’s generally bad to add code and makes the software harder to maintain. I would agree that software development standards in web development can be poor though
bowsamic··on Were software engineers blue-collar workers all along?
If you generate code you’ll never understand it as deeply as if you’d wrote it. Anyone who has done lots of code review knows this
bowsamic··on Were software engineers blue-collar workers all along?
Agreed. LLMs are really bad at software engineering at the moment and those who disagree are those people who think more lines of code are good. The only argument against it is the unjustified guess that one day they’ll be better. My feeling is that they very fact they show us things we missed makes them liable to increase tech debt, and that they in general reduce human understanding of the code base. I don’t see how those things will ever not be true
bowsamic··on The baffling intelligence of a single cell (2024)
And that is our definition. Read Kant
bowsamic··on Just say no to OpenAI and Anthropic
That’s irrelevant really. Even if it might happen it still doesn’t justify your current thinking. It’s contingent. read some philosophy plz
