brandonhall··on Flight Simulator 4 from 1989 running on three immersive monitors (2017)
I'd add SimCity in there as well. Groundbreaking when it was made.
brandonhall··on Two Years, Four Nanodegree Programs, and a New Career
I have no particular insight to add, but simply wanted to say this is an absolutely wonderful story. A person with poor economic prospects took control and changed their life. Beautiful.
brandonhall··on Ask HN: As a technical founder what is the best business book you've read?
The Lean Startup and Good to Great
brandonhall··on A military technique for falling asleep in two minutes
Well done!
brandonhall··on Ask HN: Bitcoin Christmas reading
Just came out and published by McGraw-Hill. Cryptoassets by Chris Burniske and Jack Tatar. It approaches crypto as an asset class and isn't very technical. Very much written for fund managers and active investors. Highly recommended.
brandonhall··on It’s Time to Found a New Republic
More than anything, I appreciate the distillation of significant reform ideas without a partisan agenda. With the exception of the judiciary change, all of these ideas would be widely popular with the larger public.
brandonhall··on Ask HN: Secure automated backup?
I've used the following method for years and it's really simple. Get an external hard drive and partition it as needed. One for your Time Machine backup and another for data. Use Google Drive to mirror the data and use Arq as your Time Machine in the cloud.
brandonhall··on Ask HN: What's your backup setup?
1TB backup drive which is partitioned. Half is data and the other half is time machine. The data partition is mirrored to Google Drive. Then, I use Arq Backup to mirror time machine backups to Google Cloud Storage. In other words, there is always a true local and remote copy of everything. Very cheap and works well.
brandonhall··on Ask HN: Coding notes – how do you do them?
I concur on Quiver. I've been using it for months and it picks up nicely where Evernote lacks. I do wish it was a bit better in the usability department, but it's a fine tool. Also, I don't think it's been updated since I bought it.
brandonhall··on Ask HN: Dual monitors, or single 4k?
This is the same setup I have and couldn't be happier. Less expensive and with a Samsung panel the quality isn't lacking.
brandonhall··on Angular 2 versus React
I just looked at the source and it's built with Angular and Angular Material. The UI for the Cloud Console app is incredible work.
brandonhall··on 22 and no life
This is a great option for a lot of people. Glad to see you posted this. Spend 4 years in the military and you leave with great experience, have learned how to "work hard", you're respected by your peers and future employers plus you likely have a bunch of money in savings. Really wonderful option for the right people.
brandonhall··on Poll: If you're in the US, What State Do You Live In?
I'm up in Johnson City and grew up in Knoxville. I love Tennessee, but there is zero tech scene as you know. I do freelancing remotely and it provides a great life for us.
brandonhall··on Google maps 8bit quest mode. A setup for 4/1 perhaps?
Matt Cutts tweeting is how I found out.
brandonhall··on Poll: What is your current Stack Overflow reputation?
Don't really have to much add except that I love StackOverflow. It's been helpful so many times.
brandonhall··on Headphones for Hackers
I can't believe no one has mentioned Plantronics and their model 995H. They are wireless, double as a mic, have great sound quality and have controls for audio playback. $100 at the official site and I'm sure cheaper somewhere else.

I spent some serious time researching this topic last year and for the money this set was by far the best option. For the money, they are the best.

Wireless with built-in mic wins FTW. They aren't a set for audiophiles but the sound quality is excellent.

brandonhall··on Ask HN: What's Better? Generalist or Specialist
Thanks for your wonderful answer. I'm a generalist as well and have many of the same feelings you describe: "If only I knew more deeply".

I've dealt with the bottom falling out very recently. I spent last summer becoming a specialist in Adobe Flex for our desktop app and we know what happened there.

brandonhall··on foo@bar.com is a real email address
Haha, that's why I always use a dummy email addy at our own domain and make sure all unrouted mail bounces.
brandonhall··on Ask HN: How do you know if you're burnt out or just being lazy?
I think it starts with one question: Am I dreading sitting down in front of the computer today?

If yes, then you're definitely just burnt out. If the answer is no and you're not producing then you're being lazy.

brandonhall··on JQuery Growth Related To WordPress
When I see this report about the popularity of jQuery, I have to think a bunch of it is related to growth of WordPress as well. Without WordPress jQuery wouldn't be used on nearly that many sites.
brandonhall··on A web video company that is most likely a hoax
Glad you mentioned Tim here. He's one of about five truth-tellers in that world of scams. Great resource
brandonhall··on A web video company that is most likely a hoax
This stuff is so common it's scary. Just do a search for "penny stocks" and this junk will come right to the top. Sad story
