breitling··on Tiny data centre used to heat public swimming pool
I saw on TV a long time ago that a funeral home's "energy" (burning bodies) was used to heat homes somewhere in Europe.

We can just use data centers for heating too...maybe turn around all these protests against them

breitling··on India and EU announce landmark trade deal
ugh...I guess I have to bring out the crayons to explain this

The reduction came from international students and temporary workers' permits expiring. We keep increasing permanent residents.

breitling··on India and EU announce landmark trade deal
That 100K is just in 3 months. We are growing rapidly.
breitling··on India and EU announce landmark trade deal
That's 30%, not 30K

It is one of the top 5 issues for ALL Canadians.

Mark Carney should know that it would be an _extremely_ unpopular move right now to allow India more access to immigrate here.

What's a "few more" to you?

Look at this chart for example: https://preview.redd.it/in-the-first-three-months-of-2025-ca...

The current Carney govt? Maybe. Too soon to tell, but things are heading in the right direction.

The previous Trudeau govt? Absolutely not. He was the prime minister of everyone except Canadians.

Canada is embarking on a trade agreement with India and collectively our greatest fear is the immigration issue. Canada's immigration is already quite lop-sided.

Even easier to communicate if they stay in their own country among their own people with a shared background
breitling··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
As an IT worker, I honestly don't see many/any Cubans and Latinos in my day to day.

However I do see a ton, and I mean a ton of Indians and their hiring practices. Hence why I started my sentence with "I have personally witnessed it"

breitling··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
What if they're bringing the average salary down for everyone else because they can, thanks to h1b?
breitling··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
Because they bring their racism here. https://www.npr.org/2020/10/12/922936053/california-workplac...

I have personally witnessed it myself. I have countless Indian friend who are candid with me. They are biased against whole communities. Blacks, Muslims, etc.

Indians hire Indians.

breitling··on Mark Zuckerberg freezes AI hiring amid bubble fears
To be fair, buying Instagram so early + WhatsApp were great moves too.

The world leaders are not doing enough to end this genocide. Where are the sanctions? Where is the pressure to end this? Just empty words.

The oppressors have free reign without serious consequences.

breitling··on CBA hiring Indian ICT workers after firing Australians
>Citation please

Brampton, Thorncliff, Scarborough, etc. There's no shortage of immigrant heavy neighborhoods.

Heck, I'm in Durham and the demographics are changing rapidly.

breitling··on CBA hiring Indian ICT workers after firing Australians
For non-Canadians, this may be hard to comprehend how quickly the demographics have shifted, but the Indians are here in person. No need to send the order to a call center in India. We have that many.
breitling··on CBA hiring Indian ICT workers after firing Australians
Canadian banks, telecoms, and even retail chains, have been shamelessly replacing Canadian workers with Indians for decades.

At this point, a plurality of our new immigrants come from one or two states in India.

I would challenge you to go to a coffee shop in any major city and try to find a Canadian worker.

Not sure what the future is for a Canadian worker, but it's bleak.

Anecdotally, most of my friends and acquaintances are making a conscious effort to boycott Israeli products.

Not sure what the relevance is but Starbucks seems to be the first to go.

breitling··on FedEx launches new e-commerce platform
I was am Amazon seller and absolutely hated it.

It is seemingly all run by bots. They delisted my product and none of the humans knew why. It is a bot that decided that and no one could answer what the reason was.

I welcome any competition that is more friendly to sellers.

breitling··on Clicks – Physical keyboard for iPhone
Doesn't BlackBerry have a patent for this?

Ryan Seacrest had started a iPhone physical keyboard company, Typo I think, and got sued so bad he abandoned the whole thing. How will these people get around it?

breitling··on Gemini in Reasoning: Unveiling Commonsense in Multimodal Large Language Models
I have been playing around with various GPTs lately by getting them to help me with my management consulting work. Usually analyzing docs and merging them or two me what the overlap is, etc.

My experience with Gemini pro is that it often completely and spectacularly misunderstands the ask. No other GPT comes close to getting it that wrong. As a result, I don't have a high level of confidence in it.

I find Mixtral to be quite impressive. It is by far the fastest and gives me good output. At least for big documents kind of work.

breitling··on New U.S. immigration rules spur more visa approvals for STEM workers
Canada has many issues.

Housing crisis is because of unsustainably high immigration levels.

In 2023 alone, there was a net inflow of over 1.3 million people. It's a lot for a country of 39 million. Where will they live?

Another major issue is the suppression of wages this causes.

Also there is a serious lack of diversity in the immigrant population (no cap by country as in the US). This is tearing apart the cultural fabric of communities.

breitling··on DIY IP-KVM Based on Raspberry Pi
Not sure how common knowledge this is, but there's a growing community of people using this for work from home gigs.

breitling··on Tell HN: Reminder that your LinkedIn profile is fully visible to site members
Stalking at a marathon is way too easy.

If you see someone you want to know more about, just look at their bib. Based on the bib number and/or their partial name that's printed, you can check out the results and they give you a full breakdown about their location, age, and full name. You could even get their photos from the race.

Take those details to social media and you'll have a field day.

breitling··on Canada bans most foreigners from buying homes
That's 405,000 permanent residents only. Add to that hundreds of thousands international students + hundreds of thousands temporary workers + tens of thousands asylum seekers + etc + etc
breitling··on The world has reached 8B people but soon we'll hit a decline we'll never reverse
Toronto just added 14 new suburbs. Until a month ago, these thousands of acres were considered the "green belt" necessary for the functioning of a large metropolis. Now they'll be paved over.
