brepl··on Ask HN: What are the best hacks to fight depression?
What is DIV?
brepl··on CockroachDB 2.0 released
I've seen people referring to CockroachLabs referring to it as CRDB internally.
brepl··on Ask HN: What do Facebook employees think about their company?
Which of these opinions would be surprising?
brepl··on Tea if by sea, cha if by land: Why the world only has two words for tea
Comments like this are what the internet is all about! AFAIK Yugoslavs call tea "čaj" (pronounced... chai!). I have no idea about other Slavs. And if by Commonwealth you mean the British one, I think the biggest member state is India, where "chai" is also the word.
brepl··on Dozens of Companies Are Using Facebook to Exclude Older Workers From Job Ads
Why is this getting downvoted?
brepl··on “Username or password is incorrect” is bullshit
If the username is used as the salt when storing the hashed password in the database, it's unpossible to know if a supplied password is valid-but-for-a-different-account.
brepl··on Eric Schmidt to become technical advisor to Alphabet
Makes more sense than the current HN title.
brepl··on Selling Bitcoins in Canada
Dollar prices for selling e.g. ETH seem 10-20% lower than market.
brepl··on Uber is officially a cab firm, says European court
> And again: "Taxi company considered by a court to be a taxi company". And this is news.

Any info on how much it cost European citizens to establish this stunning revelation?

brepl··on Bitcoin Takes Bigger Wall Street Stage with Smooth CME Debut
> I have little doubt that the current value of BTC and other coins will probably blow up in the future

Blow up bigger, or blow up smaller?

brepl··on Understanding Ethereum Smart Contracts
Possibly because the latest version of MetaMask has broken event listening: https://github.com/MetaMask/metamask-extension/issues/2393
brepl··on The Supply of Tethers at 27 November 2017 is $675M
> The fatal flaw in Tether is that you have to trust the company behind it.

How is Unum any different? Looking at the contract:

1. Contract owner can withdraw the ETH balance at any time.

2. Contract owner can control the Oracle.

3. If there's not enough ETH balance in the contract, you can't change your unum tokens back to ETH.

brepl··on Why we never thank open source maintainers
Some people, rightly or wrongly, feel that their use of an open source library is endorsement and thanks enough, at least until you meet the maintainer in person or have other cause to be in contact with them.
brepl··on From Markdown to remote code execution in Atom
> Bringing web security issues to desktop apps

Wonderful :)

brepl··on The art of the dinner party
Except when "how are you?" just means "hi".
brepl··on Should we stop using the Google font service and host on our own?
In some countries, downloading things from CDN has a significant effect on page load times so this is good advice. Sadly most users won't disable custom fonts because they don't know it's a problem.
brepl··on What does an innocent man have to do to go free? Plead guilty
put their money
brepl··on How Fact-Free Parenting Policies Rob Kids' Independence
> You don't even need to go as far as France.

The implication in the comment above is that he's already in France. So going to RI or NJ would be going further.

brepl··on Fish are eating lots of plastic
> Yeah, in 21st century English fish is a meat

Having spent the best part of the last 17 years speaking 21st century English, this is a surprisingly strong assertion to me.

From http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/115517:

> The flesh of animals used as food, esp. excluding fish...

brepl··on Watsi launches universal health coverage, funded by YC Research
Looks like https://www.simprints.com/
brepl··on Google Critic Ousted from Think Tank Funded by the Tech Giant
It only supports _some_ western European languages.
brepl··on ThoughtWorks has been sold to private equity
https://web.archive.org/web/20080103072111/http://www.zedsha...
brepl··on ThoughtWorks has been sold to private equity
What did ThoughtWorks do with their profits before they were bought? If it was privately owned, does that mean the profits were dividended to the founder? Or were they all re-invested in the company to fund expansion?
brepl··on ThoughtWorks has been sold to private equity
Got a link for this? The original seems to be gone.
brepl··on ThoughtWorks has been sold to private equity
> the 'social justice' projects are already halted

When did that happen? Was it done to make the company more attractive to buyers, to protect profits, or for idealistic reasons?

brepl··on Psilocybin-assisted group therapy for demoralization in long-term AIDS survivors
> especially for a non English speaker

If you don't speak English, every word will be confusing.

brepl··on ThoughtWorks has been sold to private equity
A few questions:

* What's the likely outcome for employees?

* Who was the previous owner?

* How much did it sell for?

* Are operations in specific regions likely to be shut down or sold off?

brepl··on SoftBank’s $100B fund is in a league of its own
> There is an argument that foreign investment tends to liberalize those sorts of countries.

The way I read, it's investment _from_ those countries, not _to_ them.

brepl··on A note on programmer salaries
Good recruiters do this for you.
brepl··on A note on programmer salaries
Is this necessarily a bad strategy? How much extra time investment in understanding the auto market and checking various different options is required to guarantee you'll make a better choice?

Then compare the cost saving, and time spent on the above, to the marginal cost of your free time. Have you saved anything?
