brianjolney··on Ask HN: What software do you use to take notes?
Personal notes in Evernote but increasingly taking team notes in Dropbox's Paper.
brianjolney··on A kidney donor at 18 now regrets it
Seems like the way to solve this, without opening up market pricing for them. In theory, this would create a marketplace where supply outstrips demand.
brianjolney··on EMV Switch This Week Could Threaten Many Businesses in U.S
I'm pretty sure the article has it completely backwards. If a retailer has a chip reading terminal, they aren't responsible for fraud. It incentivizes retailers to update their hardware, or face shouldering the fraud risk for chip enabled cards that they end up swiping.
brianjolney··on FOILing NYC’s Taxi Trip Data
Can we get this put on S3? Would love to play around with it.
brianjolney··on 17-year-old is author of BlackPOS/Kaptoxa malware used against Target?
Glad I'm not the only one where thats the first thing that came to mind haha!

Tossed into photoshop and just put all versions over each other w/ darken layer...

brianjolney··on Jelly's First Week: An Outside-Looking-In Data Analysis
Really clever way to get traffic towards Rjmetrics, love the approach.
brianjolney··on Everpix is Shutting Down
just started using them, the platform was actually really interesting and well developed. sad to see them go...
brianjolney··on Banksy Art Sale in Central Park [video]
surprised so few stopped. $60 for a canvas knockoff of banksy isnt a bad price, let alone an original.
brianjolney··on Create Cards via Email
Postmark is one I've used in the past that has an incoming mail API (in addition to outbound) that hits an endpoint you set with email data already processed for you, attachments included.
brianjolney··on New closure allows camping mattress to be inflated in seconds
you'd be surprised how little you need to inflate these types of things to be comfortable. Often times you only fill it 60% or so so it has some give when you lay on it.
brianjolney··on Distributed Personal Wiki
This is exactly why I love evernote. You can still set links between notes, and the search index across documents is amazing
brianjolney··on Cisco Acquires Enterprise Wi-Fi Startup Meraki For $1.2 Billion In Cash
we replaced Casper suite for Meraki's free MDM solution, has been amazing for us. Just recently started to test some of their AP's, and have been really impressed.
brianjolney··on Ask HN: Where do you keep your ideas?
I keep an evernote notebook for ideas, and drop photos and various ideas into it over time. I revisit every few days to organize and cull the really bad ideas. The ones I keep returning to seem to bubble up to the top.
brianjolney··on Sol — a sunny little homemade virtual machine
awesome. thanks.

Somewhat offtopic - I really liked the digitized whiteboard looking drawings. Is that off a tablet, or a photographed whiteboard?
brianjolney··on How everyone benefits from Verizon’s FCC-mandated free tethering
wasn't the C spectrum as part of this fine from the FCC based on 4g networks? IE how does this impact iPhone users?
brianjolney··on Google Fiber Plans & Pricing
For me they charged the wrong card for my Nexus 7, and I wrote them to see about fixing that.

Exactly 10 days later I received an email about american express cards being declined, and that I should now be good to go.

Google is great, just not when it comes to human beings helping you.

brianjolney··on Ask HN: How Much Would You Pay for Google to be Ad Free?
I actually prefer the ads in certain instances. If a company is willing to pay per click, they probably have an offer that is compelling to me.
brianjolney··on nReduce: an alliance of hackers
Sorry, no problem. Getting two different things confused!
brianjolney··on Sentiment Analysis using Apache Hive
I'm not sure regexp matching smileys is really considered sentiment analysis
brianjolney··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (May 2012)
Ryan's done some great work for us, has an awesome eye for interface design and great turnaround.
brianjolney··on Free 18GB Dropbox account now possible through referrals
Just recently did this for about $20 - I targeted dropbox OSX as my keyword to get only those downloading the software and it worked really well. Sitting at 24gb/mo free.
brianjolney··on How I built a Hacker News mobile web app
The details are fantastic. Great work!
brianjolney··on Don't submit to the SSL cert racket. You can get one for no charge
My understanding is free ones are not trusted/accepted by the browsers, hence to have something that isnt tossing errors at your users requires a small payment to a CA.

I've used positivessl from namecheap whenever I need certs, its something crazy cheap like $5

brianjolney··on [dead]
Any word on what operating system support? Would love to use this for an RFID system if it would support debian or something similar...

SEEKING FREELANCER

Vita Coco - NYC

Looking for a generalist developer to run some projects internally, would need to be based in the NYC area. Half on site work, half remote.

Think PHP/MYSQL backend work, HTML/CSS/JS frontend work, social APIs (Facebook, Twilio, Mailchimp), Phonegap iPad apps, etc.

Email me: bolney@vitacoco.com

brianjolney··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (November 2011)
New York, NY - Contract, INTERN

Vita Coco (coconut water) - http://vitacoco.com

We package and sell the #1 brand of all natural coconut water in the US. Our investors include Madonna, Demi Moore, AROD, & more. We're probably at your local grocery store, drug store, or corner deli!

We're seeking a tech generalist, who can own projects such as deploying ipads and developing MVP style applications for our sales team, using NFC/RFID technology along with FB & other social API's to do some really cool physical checkins with our field marketing teams, and lots more.

EDIT: Almost forgot, the gig includes all the Vita Coco you can drink!

If this sounds like you, email me at bolney@vitacoco.com and let's chat.

brianjolney··on Why the MBA 11 is now my sole computer
Agonized a bit and decided to run with a loaded 11".

Bought the new thunderbolt display to pair it up, so when I'm at home its amazing, but I can bring it everywhere with me and I don't feel like its too small to work.

brianjolney··on Automate download, install, config of IE-only VM's with VirtualBox (Linux/OSX)
from the github wiki:

Rough VM size estimates:

IE7: 13GB IE8: 8.4GB IE9: 13GB Currently, the script will leave the compressed RAR files in place, which means you're looking at something like 45 freaking GB if you don't prune them manually (in ~/.ievms/vhd/). This wasn't a big deal for me on my company workstation, but kinda sucks on my Macbook Air, so I'll be adding a cleanup option shortly. You probably don't need to keep the compressed files around anyway since we take a snapshot like you mentioned.

SEEKING FREELANCERS -- (NYC/Remote)

Need a web development generalist to do some frontend work (converting flash content into html/css/js), some PHP backend work (integrating new features into our wordpress sites), and developing some interesting backend tools (price tracking spiders, social crm dashboards, etc.)

Will be a smaller (10-20 hrs/wk) ongoing project for the right person.
