brianliou91··on Welcome Home, Garry Tan
When I was in YC Garry showed me how to be a founder. After YC Garry showed me how to be a more compassionate human to myself and others. I'd recommend everyone check out the inner work Garry has also achieved beyond his external achievements.

Congrats Garry!

brianliou91··on On Being Indispensable
There is a difference between having power and being indispensable.

Power enables you to delegate whereas if you are indispensable but leadership has no idea what you do, you are powerless and stuck.

It's not fair that power is determined subjectively and largely politically, but it's the reality we live in.

brianliou91··on Elizabeth Warren’s simple case for breaking up big tech
I think Warren is fantastic but I feel like her argument for Amazon is flawed and I'm curious to hear counter arguments.

In her example of Amazon being a platform and information aggregator, wouldn't a brick & mortar grocery chain like Safeway/Vons/CVS be guilty of the same anti-competitive practices when they sell "Safeway Brand Fruity Os" next to Kellogg Fruit Loops?

Businesses seem to have been able to be platforms and information aggregators for a very long time and we've had plenty of innovation and competition

brianliou91··on Geoff Ralston taking over as President of YC
When I was a 21 year old with a fledgling startup, Geoff kept a promise to me several years later that he definitely didn't need to and had barely any incentive to. He did it because he is a man of his word and I owe much of the opportunity I have in my career because of his integrity and that choice to keep it. Congrats Geoff! And THANKS!!!
brianliou91··on Bogle Sounds a Warning on Index Funds
This is fascinating. Selfishly though this seems to signal for investors of index funds (such as myself) that they will only continue to be good investments unless major government regulation occurs.

Does anyone know of any investment risk to index funds if everyone is now doing it?

brianliou91··on Life is Short (2016)
Hey! I've been trying to find positive stories of people who sacrificed work for deeper personal lives. Would love to chat with you over email if possible! My email is brian@teamleada.com
brianliou91··on Buffett wins $1M decade-old bet that the S&P500 would outperform hedgefunds
Although there is still tons of money going to actively managed funds it seems to be more and more common knowledge that index fund investing is ultimately the smartest thing to do for personal finance.

Does anyone know what the risk factors are (if any) to this type of passive investing if EVERYONE begins to do the same thing?

brianliou91··on Notes for the New Year
totally agree with this!
brianliou91··on YC Changes
I would personally seek Michael's advice when I was in the S15 batch because of how earnest his advice was. Even for companies outside his group you could really tell the effort he would give to provide quality guidance. One example of how much Michael cares was in the days before our demo day, I was the first to come in at 8AM and Michael literally had slept on the couch having stayed up all night providing feedback the night before. He comes out of the partners office, sits down, and has me pitch maybe 10 minutes after he probably woke up :) Congrats!
brianliou91··on How to Keep a Journal
Great idea thanks for sharing! Using gmail as a journal though does seem to contradict the message in this article because by using Gmail, while it is extremely efficient, it's not 100% private. Maybe it's just my own paranoia but I feel like you would even more fall into that disconnect "between what I thought I was supposed to feel (what a normal person would feel) and what I actually felt." Or maybe I'm interpreting this article incorrectly?
brianliou91··on Show HN: Daybook – A new take on personal journaling
I signed up blindly out of curiosity! Agree that some context on the service needs to be added. I love the simplicity and feel. Reminds me a lot of medium and I've actually often caught myself journaling on medium by accident because it's so easy to do.

- The publish post button is weird though because I don't know what you mean by publish, is it being published to the public? Published as in like it's a finished entry?

brianliou91··on Magic
Has our society really come to simply throwing money on paying two separate third parties to order FOOD? I use Magic, to use Postmates, to get Chipotle?! No offense but I feel like this is the most first world solution I've ever encountered. Congrats on the success and traffic though and best of luck on executing.

One of the founders of Leada here, any and all feedback would be appreciated but especially UX and if any part of the on-boarding process is confusing would be great!
brianliou91··on Cofounder management
Having just gone through some co-founder struggles myself I think your response is right on the money. Especially when you talk about catching problems in the moment and communicating clearly the first time. I've learned that arguments can be on the surface about one thing (maybe a present issue) but really they stem from something previously uncleared or what SEEMED to be cleared arguments in the past. Each miss-communication compounds to affect the next. I'm just hopeful that experience and a willingness to learn and accept mistakes is the ultimate remedy.

brianliou91··on Ask HN: Got a YC S14 batch interview?
Thanks for the feedback! I think your right!
brianliou91··on Ask HN: Got a YC S14 batch interview?
Didn't get an interview. Would love feedback on our app because I thought we had a real shot. Idea: Codecademy for Data Science Team: 3 UC Berkeley Seniors with degrees in CS (2X), Statistics (2X), Business, and Electrical Engineering. 2 committed to working full time. One has a 1 year masters after working full time in the summer. Progress: Prototype stage Extra: Received recs from 2 YC alumni, not sure specifically what

I feel like we were just a bit early maybe to apply?
