brodouevencode··on Our muscles will atrophy as we climb the Kardashev Scale
Because some of us have high levels of skepticism with that stuff. Even the GLP-1 inhibitors are too new to really get a handle on. The only proven methods to health are those that have existed before we ever came along: a clean diet and (good) exercise.

History shows time and time again that there are no free lunches in nature.

brodouevencode··on How the mother of all bubbles will pop: betting against American exceptionalism
> But every hero has a fatal flaw. America’s is its sharply increasing addiction to government debt.

A problem so big that even a non-American takes notice.

brodouevencode··on Ask HN: SWEs how do you future-proof your career in light of LLMs?
Good points - my company has already committed to #2
brodouevencode··on Ask HN: SWEs how do you future-proof your career in light of LLMs?
LLMs will just write code without you having to go copy-pasta from SO.

The real secret is talent stacks: have a combination of talents and knowledge that is desirable and unique. Be multi-faceted. And don't be afraid to learn things that are way outside of your domain. And no, you wouldn't be pigeon-holing yourself either.

For example there aren't many SWEs that have good SRE knowledge in the vehicle retail domain. You don't have to be an expert SRE, just be good enough, and understand the business in which you're operating and how those practices can be applied to auto sales (knowing the laws and best practices of the industry).

brodouevencode··on Dystopian 'wanted' posters of top health CEOs appear in New York City
Up next: let's get some Most Wanted posters of grifters, charlatans, liars, pundits, media personalities, and politicians to create an expression of life-endangering intent.
brodouevencode··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
It just means that their costs have correlated with revenues, which is to be expected in certain industries.

The better comparison would be with other insurance carriers.

brodouevencode··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
I agree, but demonizing the profit motive isn't the ideal path. The system, as far as I can tell, needs work. The fiduciary model works in other places, it will probably work in insurance and healthcare as well.
brodouevencode··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
There's no such thing as a free lunch. Someone will have to bear a cost somewhere along the way.
brodouevencode··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
How far does this carry? Is the charge of the insurance company to keep you alive at all costs?
brodouevencode··on [dead]
Because it's popular?
brodouevencode··on How much do I need to change my face to avoid facial recognition?
The timing of this with respect to AI/FR being a hotly reported technology used in the search of the UnitedHealthcare Insurance CEO is kinda gross.

But such are the times.

How anyone could consider Marx to have any positive influence on humanity is beyond me.
brodouevencode··on Overengineering Is the Most Pervasive Form of Technical-Debt
This is just an argument for POSIX-like systems (simple tools that do one thing very well).
brodouevencode··on Denmark will plant 1B trees and convert 10% of farmland into forest
What percentage of output is accounted for in the lower tier (not good) farmland? If the land is truly suboptimal the additional costs will not scale with the reduction of output.

brodouevencode··on What Made Dostoevsky's Work Immortal
Two movies, one screen.
brodouevencode··on What made Dostoevsky's work immortal
Because that's a manifestation of the struggle, not the struggle itself.
brodouevencode··on What made Dostoevsky's work immortal
> a writer's financial situation does not make art immortal.

That was not the point of the article. The point was that the narrowness of circumstance - living between riches and poverty and what type of person can handle that (not to mention the unique problems that might come up with that) - requires someone that can balance that sort of situation.

brodouevencode··on What Made Dostoevsky's Work Immortal
Which book would this be? His catalog, the great bulk of it anyway, is quite prolific.

brodouevencode··on Almost 4 in 10 U.S. adults under 30 get news from news influencers on socials
Assuming the other six get any news at all, does that mean the other six get it from the traditional sources (nightly news, NYT, etc.)?

brodouevencode··on Ask HN: I can't work in tech anymore. Help?
Question, and it's completely innocent: are you good at what you do? I found that once I became really competent in may areas (SRE, Python/Golang, architecture) it was just a matter of finding the right company to work for. I had many of the same problems and frustrations when I did work I was not truly confident in. (Just a thought)
brodouevencode··on "We Will Pass Those Tariff Costs Back to the Consumer," Says CEO of AutoZone
That is the ultimate goal of the incoming administration. They want China to hurt. It's more of a foreign policy play than it is economic.
