brodouevencode··on The Guardian and La Vanguardia's leaving X is a wake-up call for legislators
> The Guardian and La Vanguardia will stop sharing their content on X (formerly Twitter) due to the disinformation flooding the platform. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) argues that this is a glaring sign of the authorities’ failure to establish regulations that protect reliable sources of information on digital platforms.

So the solutions are:

Promote journalistic content in algorithms, or "enact the rules we want on all platforms, thereby creating a single production model"

Distinguish influencer accounts from journalist accounts, or "crowd out/create barriers to entry with credentialism"

Regularly evaluate social media’s impact on press freedom, or "penalties for those who don't toe the line"

Obligate social media platforms to remain neutral, aka "our definition of neutral, of course"

How is this different than any other regulatory capture?

brodouevencode··on Ask HN: What do you think about CSV to Postgres?
Postgres has a mechanism for importing CSVs. Not sure what the value of something like this would add.

brodouevencode··on The Bosses Who Don't Care About Your Ivy League Degree
The best employees I've had came from state schools, even though I've employed/managed dozens from the regional top tier schools (Georgia Tech, UGA, UNC). Give me someone with drive and a history of getting things done well.

brodouevencode··on Has the market spoken? Time to pick up Golang and Rust?
I found it pretty easy to go from Python to Golang. I'm still learning Rust, and finding it to be much more sophisticated that Python and Golang.
brodouevencode··on My Number One Issue: The anti-intellectual turn in higher education
Good points, but the author is missing the other major problem in universities: that they've become for-profit centers. "Butts-in-seats" is the number one priority according to the last college president I worked for. Headcount means tuition and funding and grants. The kids be damned, they're not interested in their success. In fact if a sophomore or freshman drops out, that's room for a new incoming student with new loans they'll take out.

Take more quotes out of context to support your priors. Thats what cultists do.
brodouevencode··on Trump wins presidency for second time
> Both sides are not equally guilty

Yes they most certainly are.

brodouevencode··on Trump wins presidency for second time
The rhetoric has only amplified in negative ways since he came on the scene in 2015. I don't know who kicked it off, and don't think it matters. Both sides are equally guilty for the hatred they've spewed.
brodouevencode··on Trump wins presidency for second time
I probably did see them and just forgot about it because it's a political ad. I can tell you, living in a fairly red area, these are the only concerns I've heard from friends/family/people in my church and community. They don't _care_ what trans people do to themselves but have strong opinions on that they're being forced to not only accept but agree with that lifestyle.
brodouevencode··on Trump wins presidency for second time
That seems sufficiently disconnected.

Alternatively, if the fed didn't just print money to pay for unnecessary vote-buying schemes then the inflation rate would have been only minimally (if at all) impacted by the points you made.

How are they connected?

brodouevencode··on Only 5.3% of US welders are women. After years as a professor, I became one
My experience w/ metal workers of all types holds true to this. I think it's the fumes.
brodouevencode··on Trump wins presidency for second time
There is quite a bit of pessimism here.
brodouevencode··on Trump wins presidency for second time
For most of the right, as I hear it: if the trans community left the kids alone and trans women didn't insist on playing sports (especially contact sports) with biological women, they really wouldn't care.
brodouevencode··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Because Harris was such a bad candidate.

When someone's grocery bill exceeds 40% of their total income, they're not going to worry about the climate.

brodouevencode··on Microservices Can Wait
> By their nature, microservices require you to define what each service is responsible for. Akin to waterfall development, this means making structural choices before you’ve had a chance to observe the system. These definitions inevitably end up being incorrect, as you know the least about your domain in the beginning.

This is a terrible analog. Interfaces, versioning, and composite services address all of this.

brodouevencode··on Iconic gun-makers gave sensitive customer information to political operatives
The reason gun owners do not like government registries is because they may be used for targeting those owners for compulsory buy-back or confiscation programs. While the deceit of the manufacturers is indeed abhorrent, owners are not afraid of manufacturers showing up at their door.

It is two different things, and both are bad (but one is way worse).

brodouevencode··on Ask HN: Which internet protocol do you miss in the modern days?
Same here.

The newsgroups were much more _sane_ too for almost all types of discourse.

brodouevencode··on Home Depot Orders Corporate Staff to Work in Stores 4 Times a Year
This is common in retail environments, and it makes sense. Corporate support staff get experience with the pain points that store staff experience, which (in theory) improves store operations and customer service.
