broken_symlink··on Reddit has been down for more than an hour
Yeah I dont understand why people are glad its down. I have an account specifically curated to my interests, where I unsubscribed from all the default subs and only subscribed to things I'm interested in. Theres a lot of great niche communities out there for my hobbies that I've found on reddit.
broken_symlink··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2022)
Thanks! Applied for this.
broken_symlink··on Johns Hopkins Beast
I worked at APL for 3 years (2015 - 2018) and loved my time there. Although, the work got repetitive over time and was no longer challenging, the thing I loved the most was the social environment. Theres a lot to be said for having a good team/group of people around you. I still keep in touch with some of them.
broken_symlink··on PyFlow – Visual scripting framework for Python – NodeRED alternative?
I tried a pyflow a couple years ago. It was very confusing and not intuitive at all, which is what I think one of the biggest advantages of these types of GUIs is supposed to be. Doing simple things like adding inputs and operations to the graph were very difficult.

I ended up developing my own tool based on the flowchart editor in pyqtgraph. The GUI for that was quite intuitive and the code to modify it was also far simpler. That said there are a few features from pyflow that I wish the pyqtgraph editor had, like subgraphs.

broken_symlink··on New math book rescues landmark topology proof
There is a language called lean which is popular among mathematicians. Here is an article: https://www.quantamagazine.org/building-the-mathematical-lib...

A more recent article as well: https://www.quantamagazine.org/lean-computer-program-confirm...

broken_symlink··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2021)
Had no idea there was a Rockstar office in Andover! I grew up there.
broken_symlink··on A Complete Guide to LLVM for Programming Language Creators
Can you print variables in lldb with the debug information?

One compiler that I use which emits llvm ir added support for debug information recently and its now possible to set breakpoints in gdb but you can't print out any stack variables or anything so its not useful other than figuring out which code paths execute.

I'd like to learn more about this. Maybe contribute to the compiler and fix this issue.

broken_symlink··on RIP Google Music
I never used the streaming part, but why did they kill the app for playing music offline? I liked it for that.
broken_symlink··on Apple (Pro) Mouse (2014)
I agree. I aas a kid around that time and I loved the puck mouse.
broken_symlink··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2020)
There do not seem to be any listings on the site?
broken_symlink··on TileDB closes $15M Series A for universal data engine
I've looked at tiledb a few times. I think it would make a lot of sense to use it as a serialization format for legion. https://legion.stanford.edu/

Its been on my todo list to try it out for a while. Maybe my next weekend project.

broken_symlink··on Apple supplier Foxconn to invest $1B in India, sources say
Its the same billion they were supposed to invest in Wisconsin.
broken_symlink··on Amazon to pay $1B+ for Zoox
I work in an office that shares space with Zoox. I've never told anyone this but I find them incredibly annoying.

Whenever they take their cars out for a test drive, they sit in the middle of the road in the parking lots. If you aren't going to be driving around anytime soon, just pull into a parking spot, instead of blocking all the empty spots and making it more difficult for people to drive around you.

broken_symlink··on It’s Time to Get Back to RSS
I once wrote a little python script that did something like this in the systray.
broken_symlink··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2020)
Is there a specific career site for the space sciences lab or is the only way to find out about openings by looking through all the ucb postings?

I have a list of sites I occasionally check for jobs and would like to ssl to the list, but there doesn't seem like an easy way to know what openings are available.

broken_symlink··on Turning a MacBook into a Touchscreen with $1 of Hardware (2018)
What sorts of improvements could you do if you used a stylus instead?
broken_symlink··on Should I Resign from My Full Professor Job to Work Fulltime on Cocalc?
I would have tried to explore that option before leaving completely. I know two professors who have switched fields, one was physics professor who did work in string theory, switched to genomics and got position at a medical school. Another was a CS professor who actually went in to math.

You sometimes see CS professors who have degrees in pure math just browsing different department's websites.

broken_symlink··on Should I Resign from My Full Professor Job to Work Fulltime on Cocalc?
I bet he could get tenure in a CS department if he tried.
broken_symlink··on Should I Resign from My Full Professor Job to Work Fulltime on Cocalc?
Since he brought up he may have been in the wrong place being in the math department, did he ever actually try to switch to the CS department?
broken_symlink··on Southwest Boeing 737 Max Makes Emergency Landing at Orlando International
Why do they still allow this though? Its not like the plane can't crash if there are no passengers in it. There is still a risk of the plane crashing in a residential area for example.
broken_symlink··on Southwest Boeing 737 Max Makes Emergency Landing at Orlando International
I don't know exactly how grounding works, but is there a reason why the plane can't just stay in Orlando?
broken_symlink··on How I'm still not using GUIs in 2019: A guide to the terminal
What about ncurses?
broken_symlink··on I have magnets implanted in my hands
What about like fake fingerprints that are magnetic? I wonder how thin they can make magnetic sheets? It might be too weak though but you could potentially do all 10 fingers.
broken_symlink··on So Long, Macbook. Hello Again, Linux
I've used xournal in the past for signing pdfs on linux.
broken_symlink··on Python Data Visualization 2018: Why So Many Libraries?
I tried a number of libraries a few years ago. I eventually settled on plotly. Between that and dash (https://plot.ly/products/dash/) i can build some pretty powerful visualizations very easily.
broken_symlink··on A History of the Sentence "Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo." (1999-2015)

broken_symlink··on Learning to Read in Your 30s Profoundly Transforms the Brain
I've been wanting to get in to reading, but my biggest issue is finding something to read that interests me. How did you start finding things?
broken_symlink··on Ask HN: Is the new MacBook Pro worth its value for a developer?
Lenovo just released the thinkpad x1 extreme. You can get 16gb ram and 512gb ssd for $1975.
broken_symlink··on My dad’s resume and skills from 1980
At my previous employer we had people on our team who were up there in age who were still programmers. One of them said he tried management but he's definitely not a people person and doesn't like playing politics. He said it went horribly for everyone involved, him, his team, his superiors. He went back to just coding and said he'll never do management again. Technically, he's very proficient, and as a new grad myself, he was always my go to for design questions.
broken_symlink··on Show HN: Plot modern addresses on Earth 240M years ago
I was hoping that if I zoomed in enough I'd get a 3d street view of a bunch of dinosaurs walking around. I was disappointed.
