brokenmachine··on Detecting model weight tampering in GPU memory (Rome attacks)
It's a bit of a mouthful... :)
brokenmachine··on Anthropic recorded a staggering $80B net loss in the first half of 2026
Not buying AI, buying other assets.
brokenmachine··on Why my Asus laptop kept rebooting after sleep and how to fix it
The marketing tries to tell us that we're on the brink of AGI, but still in 2026 putting a random laptop reliably to sleep remains an open problem.
brokenmachine··on Detecting model weight tampering in GPU memory (Rome attacks)
Not to jump on you, but it just irritates me when people anthropomorphize LLMs...

LLMs don't "understand".

Don't fall for the marketing and overstate their ability.

brokenmachine··on 'Reverse-Engineer Anything' Is the New Wild West of AI
The companies won't give up their scams without a fight.

They'll double down with secure boot and encrypted everything.

Can the bubble please pop soon so I can buy the dip before retiring?
brokenmachine··on Man arrested after discussing plans for childcare mass shooting with [Claude]
In the article it says he was annoyed with Claude because it wasn't solving some other problem that he was asking it about.

Reading between the lines, it seems he may have got annoyed and made a wrongthink joke to a computer and eventually got arrested for it.

A joke with a computer, no matter how distasteful, is not past my reasonable line.

Getting arrested for making a joke in your own home is, however.

Of course, it stands to reason... if he is charged with planning to carry out a shooting, logic dictates they found a gun? Or plans to obtain one? Bullets?

Or anything at all other than an email from an offended slop generating plagiarism machine?

brokenmachine··on Personal software factories are a waste of time
If you don't have a factory, then what's the point.
brokenmachine··on Where is all the new, good software?
Yes, but not in the exact, specific, bespoke way that people need it.
brokenmachine··on Where is all the new, good software?
I'm pretty ambivalent about AI, but...

Even if some bloated, expensive software that may have contained those functions already exists, bespoke software that does exactly what I want, and only what I want, in the way I want, is still "new" in my opinion.

brokenmachine··on Show HN: Opensidian
I liked when it happened to Adobe, but I don't like this.
brokenmachine··on How to Build Wealth as a Career Person
>I hate work much more than I like buying stuff.

Me too. What a funny way to express it!

The most important number for FIRE is saving percentage, not income.

brokenmachine··on AnyPS5: Port PS5 binaries to PC without emulation (87% system libraries mapped)
And then raised the prices of them because why the hell not.
brokenmachine··on OLED burn-in test: 30-month update
Their consumer dementia field is certainly working well, if that's what you think.
brokenmachine··on Meta and Microsoft take steps to reduce employee usage of Claude AI
https://www.youtube.com/ModernVintageGamer has some great videos about emulation and he's been talking about AI recompilations quite a bit lately.
brokenmachine··on Account bans on Reddit
After being banned on reddit now a few times for doing nothing but stating an opinion contrary to the hive mind, I just don't post any more now.

Every time I think about posting, I think again.

Let it die like stackoverflow. AI won.

brokenmachine··on Anthropic reported diary entry to police, woman faces felony charge
Or you could just use notepad.

brokenmachine··on Vote on which of Hacker News' challenges for AI have been met
> In 1 minute it comprehends a complex niche code base and points out subtle errors with very little noise. A senior engineer we would have taken months to do less.

They of course operate faster than humans, but this is hyperbole. Unless your senior engineer sucks.

brokenmachine··on Pirating the Pirates
Dawson's Creek had iconic music, but as far as I can tell, the series with the original music is unobtainium. Afaict the pirates can't even get it.
brokenmachine··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
I only see downvote sometimes, for some reason. I don't see it available on the comments on this post.
brokenmachine··on FTC is investigating OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies over product risks
Also, if the govt steps in, the AI companies can declare force majeure so they can kick the can down the road a bit longer.

Oracle is the canary.

brokenmachine··on Cops Can Bypass iPhone's Automatic Reboot to Get into Locked Phones
Nobody makes their flight.
brokenmachine··on Hacking SimCity 2000 saved games
My first ever "hack" was for Strip Poker on the C64.

When I looked on the disk, I saw that the pictures were listed as, eg LADY01 up to LADY05.

11 year old me was pretty excited when I thought, "what would happen if I renamed the files?"...

brokenmachine··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
That just seems weird to me? PS5s are expensive.

Those BC250 are 1/3 the price. Or is that just because they're old?

brokenmachine··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
The main problem with cloud streamed is latency, and the other is fuck the cloud.

I, and probably a lot of the people here, spend so much time on the PC that every additional msec annoys me. If there's keyboard shortcut, then I'll learn it to avoid using the mouse.

Windows being a bloated slow mess even when run locally means that using it remotely all the time would be like torture.

I'm sure dealing with the 4k60 videos from my cameras would be a world of pain on the cloud too.

I don't need or want to pay a subscription for the tool I use for hours a day, with no advantages beyond vendor lock-in.

You need a computer either way... remote is basically all negatives when compared to local.

You are probably correct about 90% however.

90% of people are pretty ignorant about how their computers work, or how to use them more efficiently. They line up like lemmings to lose autonomy over their devices and pay subscriptions in exchange for the barest crumb of convenience.

brokenmachine··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
Gaming is less expensive and more latency-sensitive.
brokenmachine··on The newest ESP32 can run Linux and it's getting close to a Raspberry Pi
It's probably for power reasons, the nrf series are really great on power consumption.
brokenmachine··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
I use syncthing from my server to android. Seamless and configurable how I want it.

I still don't like the way apps try to hide the filesystem in android but at least I can use a file browser to access the file system directly.

Thank you for confirming my thoughts about Apple.

Unfortunately the incentive of current mobile OSs is to funnel everything towards rent-seeking.

The cloud was a mistake.
