Mine rarely shows rage bait and when it does I just block everyone involved or add words to mute list. I think people who see this a lot are in fact baited and it creates a cycle. Which isn't to say it's a good system, more that it's easily avoided

I guess it's a question if whether you miss bail of the bail bondsmen can recover 100% of the bail despite having only lost 30% of it. I bet I can guess which it is.

I'm not sure I've ever noticed a single one or had a ticket from any or heard of anyone ever getting a ticket from one. They don't seem common in my experience, or maybe it's just like an east coast thing because I've never lived in that part of the US.

I doubt bots, the linked page is really boring to read and looks like a dashboard instead of easily consumed reading. I think people are therefore drawing conclusions from the headline more than usual since the link makes the real information sort of opaque.

However it's ignorant to think that there aren't bots on HN and especially for the very many motives people have for swaying public opinion.

I super rarely use it myself these days, basically just for images, because it still seems like the best of terrible options for images. Everything else is asking ChatGPT to search for me and clicking on sources to verify if its important

5.6 has been a huge pivotal change in reverse engineering tasks for me too (largely extracting game assets from binary client files). Something I spent literally weeks on in January with claude models at the time was solved in about 30 minutes with 5.6 Sol at medium just yesterday. It's both extremely satisfying but at the same time also a little annoying how much time I had previously spent on it only for it to be solved so quickly now. I suspect improvements in AI will continue this happy but annoyed trend.
brynnbee··on Ask HN: Does anyone else feel like nothing matters anymore?
I think you may be applying extrinsic too broadly. I believe it's still intrinsic because it's about an internal feeling and desire rather than the threat of bad grades, punishment, or coercion from someone else. It's about the motivation, not the output.

Search result ads are some of the most harmful ads, and Google's ads in particular are probably the number one cause of fraud, scams, and malware on the entire planet. It's a shame that Firefox whitelisted these, but I'm sure they did it both because Google pays for their existence but also Apple themselves probably wagged their finger for some reason.
brynnbee··on GLM-5.3: Frontier coding with emergent cyber capabilities
I mean I don't want autonomous cars to follow directions by humans that sound like "plow into this crowd of people". Even things like microwaves don't let you turn it on without the door closed. I don't see how this is any different.

Thanks :)
brynnbee··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
I'm working on getting the full storyline working, it's a little complicated because I need to morph it a bit to work in an MMO context. It's also inherently a little complicated because it's all flag based and flags can be set in various orders. But yes soon, you can ask for many sailors. Possibly while riding forklifts through Dobuita.
brynnbee··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
They have physics now! And flip over when you go too hard. I spent literally like 5 hours fine tuning forklift physics, haha.
brynnbee··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
I accept they might C&D me. I'll take it down instantly if they do. Or even just a polite email. It's just a fun demo project and I refuse to accept any money for it so my hope is that it's fine. The current owners of EverQuest tend to leave projects alone as long as they aren't making money and I hope Sega doesn't care too much either for a 27 year old video game.

Sorry to hear about bluescreen, I haven't had any other reports of that from other players. Do you have resist fingerprinting turned on? It can mess with WebGL games a lot.

brynnbee··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
I wanted to make MMOs when I was like 12 years old and everyone on the internet told me it was impossible and it took millions of dollars and a team of 200 people and crazy levels of knowledge to even do the basics. Which, to be fair, was sort of correct at the time. However, it's fun to make not just one but now have 4 seperate MMO projects I've made huge amounts of progress on! And granted it's massively helped by reverse engineering original assets and reusing existing game designs - but conceptually it's entirely possible, and I've done as much for a project I haven't released much public info on yet. I'm also running 3 of them on a $15/month lightsail server - I put a huge emphasis on client-side work to make it as lightweight for the server as possible. This makes cheating easier but I'm not really worried about that since these are sort of glorified demos and not something I'd ever financially benefit from.
brynnbee··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Thanks! It's been a labor of love for over a year. Maybe closer to two, I sort of lose track.
brynnbee··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
The Shenmue one does! Also the pool game in the jazz club should work well on mobile. The pool game is available as a small stand-alone website here too, complete with Shenmue assets: https://luckybreak.app/

I've had people play IdleQuest on tablets and Steam Deck but I'm fairly certain it would be horrible on phones.

brynnbee··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
My two biggest projects are:

https://www.idlequest.net/ - a from-scratch recreation of the 1999 MMORPG classic EverQuest, featuring a real-time MMO server written in Go, a 3D game browser-based client built with Babylon.js, and the clasic UI recreated using React. You can play it both as a regular MMORPG but also in "idle mode" where it basically plays itself. This had up to 70 players online at once a while back which was really cool, though its popularity is in a bit of a lull right now. There are still tons of bugs and stuff that isn't fully implemented (and balance issues) but it's still fun for most people who have nostalgia for it.

https://www.newyokosuka.com/ - an unofficial Shenmue MMO experience. Based on the 1999 Sega Dreamcast game Shenmue, it's playable entirely in your browser! It's basic world exploration with forklift shenanigans, some basic dialogue systems, and a basic combat system test, but I'm about to push an update that includes all cutscenes and story progression as well. The story part is taking a bit of time because I'm having to mold it to fit in an MMO context. But it's a fun project to work on and the Shenmue community loves it so far.

GIMP isn't bad these days, I use it constantly
brynnbee··on DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731
Yeah that's my weakest browser game since I've actually transitioned to using a desktop Godot client I haven't released yet. It will load eventually it just takes forever bc the assets are quite large, which is part of the reason I've had to move to Godot. That project doesn't exactly have an active user base which is why it's lower on priority list to fix.

I automate testing playable parts in browser by adding a dev mode that allows text commands for everything instead of having to rely on clicking UI or 3D elements. It can see the full game state in JSON and interact in any way via commands.

And re: IP - I just accept that I might get a C&D any day and have to take it all down. I'm careful to not accept a single penny for any reason and don't even have Patreon. Usually monetizing is what makes IP owners unhappy. And for the Pokemon MMO I just don't advertise it anywhere meaningful since they'll C&D the second they see it. Largely made it for my nephew and we play it together.

brynnbee··on DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731
It'd be interesting to see what someone could do to turn a 90s era adventure game into an MMO! I never played the game myself but I think basically any game dev project that modernizes stuff is really neat.
brynnbee··on DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731
I've reverse engineered multiple classic games and turned them into popular, browser-based MMO-like experiences.

I'm also creating a free platform that replaces extremely out-of-date software, some of it only available with mutli-million dollar contracts, to help medical physics professionals with cutting-edge radiotherapy devices used to treat cancer.

I burned through $100 of credits in literally 40 minutes doing the same long running task I always do.
brynnbee··on DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731
Others have said similar but I disagree, I'm spending $200/m and I can easily burn through my weekly quota with a few overnight goals using 5.6 medium.

I had same experience with OpenAI. I have the $200/month plan and use 5.6 Sol all the time. What would normally use about 2% of my weekly allowance burned through $100 of credits in 40 minutes.

I don't think these studies meaningfully replicate the motivation of real life situations where there is either a lot of money on the line or emotional investment. Anyone can be honest when it's $20 on the line

Honestly having AIs already pretty flawlessly write in basically any language and do good enough translations from any to any is pretty astounding. Throw that on these walking robots and you basically have C3PO. It's not like his arms are good for much.
