bschwindHN··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
That's funny. I wish they'd use their better performance to not have the system lag at basic rendering over time. Last week I was watching a youtube video, and every time I adjusted the OS volume, the video dropped several frames because macos apparently couldn't render the liquid ass volume control and play the video smoothly at the same time.

A reboot fixed it, but it's just such amateur hour with things that have been solved for decades.

I use spotlight to search for the "spotlight" system preferences window. I open the "spotlight" result with the gear icon next to it (scrolling past the "spotlight.prefPane", whatever that is), and where does it take me? The "general" tab of the settings app, of course!

There are so many more that you'd be forgiven for thinking this is some new company's first release of an OS. But nope, just one of the most valuable companies in the world, fumbling basic software shit.

> on the software side they've already reversed the direction and its hopefully getting better

What things are getting better for you on the software side? I updated from macos 15 (sequoia) to macos 27 (golden gate) on a mac mini m1, and have mostly just received software regressions and worse performance.

bschwindHN··on Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible
> I am a total diva about latency

You should be! CPUs these days are so goddamn fast, there is zero excuse that things don't respond instantly to user input. Sure, you can't escape the latency of the speed of light, but so much software lags and feels like shit even on things that involve no network interactions. I have to use notion at work sometimes and it feels like trudging through a lake of mud. Absolute garbage latency because the devs (and their clanker handlers) apparently don't know any better.

Yep if you want it done quickly, the GPU is the way to go. Especially once you get to 4K resolution and beyond.

bschwindHN··on The plight of the public potty
I've been living in Japan for over 10 years. Everything is not perfect but the garbage cans are so far down the list that it doesn't even register for anyone who lives here.
bschwindHN··on Go Piss, Girl: The plight of the public potty
The people living here seem to survive just fine without these garbage cans, so I guess it's not really an "issue for them to worry about" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
bschwindHN··on The plight of the public potty
> but what is truly barbaric is the social taboo on strolling through a park on a nice autumn day sipping your coffee!

Wait, what? Has anyone ever said anything to you when you strolled around a park drinking coffee? I've been in Japan over 10 years and do that all the time, no one has given a shit about it. The only time I ever hear about these "taboos" is when foreigners try to tell other foreigners how they should behave in Japan, like it has some mystique about it or something.

bschwindHN··on Each step of decoding a PNG (2022)
Over a winter break a few years ago I wrote a PNG decoder in Rust, it was kinda fun! Here's the code if anyone's interested, it's not particularly great though.

People get so hung up on garbage, I don't get it. Keep a single plastic bag with you, put your trash in it. Take it back and throw it away at home or your hotel or wherever you're staying. Most train stations have plenty of garbage cans, and if you're traveling in Japan, you're probably taking a train.

The toilet paper sucks, sure, but that's just cheap single-ply for public use toilets. People can and do buy the good stuff for their homes. Hardly an issue to worry about.

bschwindHN··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
I saw your blog post on lobsters but don't have an account there yet.

I wanted to ask how you do sharing of immich albums to your family outside of your LAN. I'm setting up something similar and won't have any services exposed directly to the internet so I'm facing a similar problem.

bschwindHN··on New Apple TV 4K
> It also is clearly hitting CPU limits given occasional hiccups in audio processing

Can we talk about this more? I have spotify running on a 2nd gen apple tv 4k (the N-1 model), which goes to an LG OLED TV. I hear the buffer underruns, but I haven't bothered to dig into whether it's:

* The spotify app missing its audio callback deadline

* tvOS doing a poor job scheduling the audio callbacks

* Some fuckery on the LG side that is dropping audio samples

It's incredibly annoying to have "higher end" media equipment that can't even play a song without audible pops and skips in it.

bschwindHN··on New Apple TV 4K
My TV accepts 120Hz, I want to get my money's worth in hertz dammnit!

For real though, 120 is nice even just for navigating UIs smoothly. On top of that, 120 is a nice multiple of 24, 30, and 60. So the device can just output 120Hz and skip frames as needed depending on the source content frame rate.

bschwindHN··on Shaders, WebGPU Components for React, Vue, Svelte, Solid, JavaScript and Framer
I do love shaders, but not on my web pages where I usually just want to read some text.

Sites with these things inevitably turn into a massive jank fest unless you're running the latest supercomputer, and even then that can sometimes not be enough.

AverMedia makes decent ones. I think Magewell makes "professional" ones that give you the best image quality (4:4:4), but I haven't personally used them so can't attest to their quality.

Then there are all kinds of USB cards from dubiously named manufacturers, most being some white label chip that everyone uses. Some can work decently, some have a terrible capture rate like you mentioned. Due to the nature of these sellers popping up and disappearing, I can't really make a recommendation.

bschwindHN··on Show HN: Whiteboard (YC W26) – An open-source IDE for thoughtful software design
So are we just letting go and having clankers write everything now while we have other clankers "explain" it to us? Just collectively, "fuck it" ?

The software I use day to day is just getting worse and worse, and I can only guess that AI is accelerating that problem. Like I can barely convince spotify to play a full album anymore without it "failing to play a song", crashing, or play without audio underruns. We're so screwed if we can't even play audio smoothly in 2026.

Sorry, just ranting. But I see tools like this that are basically encouraging people to "let go" of understanding what exactly your code is doing, and continue to let the robot pile more and more code on top of the bad abstractions we already have.

bschwindHN··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
This drives me crazy. Sometimes I'll just put the phone down and move to a proper keyboard to type what I want. It definitely makes me use my phone less, maybe that's a good thing overall.

bschwindHN··on Re-Engineering YouTube for the Living Room: Bringing "Chrobalt" to RDK
Oof, that screenshot is pretty dire UI.

Do we really need a "next-generation living room web engine"? These smart TV OSes almost always suck ass, I wish all the TV manufacturers would just give up and ship simple panels with just basic volume and input selection control.

Or if you absolutely _must_ insist on shipping "smart" features, why do you still need to ship a full browser engine to show some text, rectangles, and images?

I wish more people knew how nice it is! And the toilet is in a completely separate room so there's no contention among one person who wants to take a bath and another who needs to use the toilet.

I just wish dish washers and dryers were more common in Japanese households. I'm in Okinawa where dryers are a lot more "standard", but dish washers are relatively rare.

bschwindHN··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Goddamnit, I have an LG TV. The panel panel itself is beautiful, but the software is complete shit and I only use an apple TV on it.

The snakes in charge of this should be thrown in jail. They talk about "owning the glass and the living room" and you can just tell they've sold out their soul long ago.

bschwindHN··on Please don't rearrange our shoes when we turn up, paramedics in Japan urge
I grew up in the suburbs in Ohio, the majority of my family and friends took their shoes off at the door.

I can't imagine feet in socks would be dirtier than the bottom of a shoe, but I guess it depends on where you walk, and how nasty you let your feet get. Like if you use a public restroom and then walk on carpets in your home, that's just gross. Maybe you walked in a park where dogs play. Good chance of tracking some dog shit into the house.
