bszupnick··on Ask HN: What have you created that deserves a second chance on HN?
Is this open sourced?
bszupnick··on Strong behavioral individuality is present at the first day after birth in fish
I hear and share your skepticism, but I'm also skeptical of pushbacks to the ever-growing research and literature on the uniqueness and, well, "personhood" of animals.

The more we learn about animals (see the article on HN ~2 days ago that bees engage in play) the more it seems like they're a lot more like us than we'd like to think. We're smart, and we can try to explain every thing away (like you do in your comment), but there's a pattern that's emerging. It's an uncomfortable pattern and I get why we try to convince ourselves that animals are fundamentally different than we are, but I'm more and more believing that we're all actually a lot more similar than we'd like to think.

A lot of my current thinking is from the book How to be Animal by Melanie Challenger. I recommend it!

For me, at least, It's just nice to see a perfectly useful, quirky "thing" on the internet that isn't monetized or having some ulterior motives.

Hearkens back to that feeling of all of us being internet citizens and laughing that I'm not the only one that makes this mistake.

Maybe I'm looking into it too much, though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

bszupnick··on Our attention span is being robbed
I think I intuitively agree with you, but I don't think it's as simple as "just do X and don't do Y".

It's akin to saying "Just choose to read a book. Drop heroin".

We'd like to think we have such control, but the fact is that these things are addictive and one can't simply "just stop" without a process and a culture that promotes these processes.

bszupnick··on Ask HN: How to Read More Books?
I know you wrote you prefer physical books to digital devices but....I recently got a Kobo ([Libra 2](https://us.kobobooks.com/products/kobo-libra-2)) and just by virtue of creating the habit of always having it on my person, I've been reading a ton more.

Phone, wallet, keys, Kobo. That habit was a much easier lift than the guilt-inducing "must read X pages/hours per Y" demands on myself, and it led to more reading.

bszupnick··on On Covid

(sarcasm, obviously, but unfortunately a common undertone with a lot of conversations in general but specifically on covid.

bszupnick··on Show HN: Hebrew Wordle
Cool! How does it handle סופית letters like ך /ח? Like totally separate letters?

For the non-Hebrew speakers, Hebrew has some letters that change form when placed at the end of the word. The Hebrew keyboard has these forms in their own key, but colloquially they're the same letter.

As an ex-Orthodox Jew, I do miss the beis medrash atmoshpere.

Also the concept of "high-involvement cooperative overlapping" is something that was recently pointed out to me by my brother, and honestly once it was named, solved a lot of marital issues between my wife and I. I would constantly interrupt her as a way of communicating that I was ardently listening and sympathizing and she'd get offended. On the flip-side, I'd be emoting to her and she would just sit and listen to me without interrupting and I would feel like she wasn't paying attention.

Once we realized this was a real cultural difference, it was something we're able understand about each other.

bszupnick··on Far more adults don’t want children than previously thought
COVID was a possibility and if that was the case, I wanted to make sure he had medical attention.

I couldn't ask him if his taste has diminished. All I knew was he was having sever upper respiratory issues.

bszupnick··on Far more adults don’t want children than previously thought
As someone who just had a kid, I can definitely say the healthcare system and daycare are HUGE expenses that would make it financially tough to have another one.

We've paid ~$10k in medical expenses up until now, and daycare is ~$2k a month (context; Long Island, NY).

The medical expenses PILE UP. Obviously the birth they filled up my wife's deductible, but then (and I should have predicted this) they started filling up our newborn's!

Our 3 month old then had a cold so we took him to the doctor who checked for RSV and covid with one swab. We got a bill for $1600.

And daycare? You need a VERY flexible job to handle a kid in daycare. LO gets his normal vaccines and springs a fever? He needs to stay home for 2 days. Daycare also took a long memorial day weekend AND the last day of June was off too for "between semesters".

Having a kid in daycare is a part-time job with unexpected hours that you pay a ton to have.

Thank God I work at a wonderful company that is SUPER understanding because I don't know what we'd do if it didn't.

bszupnick··on An NFT That Saves Lives
> This is peak absurdism. Why not simply donate the money? How is this better than a Kickstarter?

This reminds me of the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS.

Does pouring a bucket of ice water over one's head cure ALS? Obviously not.

Did creating a trend that went viral help take strides towards curing ALS? Yeah! According to Wikipedia[1] this meme brought $220 million to ALS research.

So I'm not sure you can simply say "why not donate the money instead of buying NFTs" since NFTs are what people are interested in now!

Maybe this is an instance of meeting your customer where they're at.

bszupnick··on The Hitchhiker's Guide to Online Anonymity
As someone who isn't THIS paranoid, but definitely closer to it than most, I can add a criteria for a reason one would be this paranoid. If you've worked in/with some of the agencies listed, you're not just paranoid but feel totally justified knowing exactly what some old pals can see.
bszupnick··on Living Like It's 99, No Social Media, No Smartphone
> trick I’ve developed, when giving my contact info to new people, is to enter my phone number on their smartphone myself, and install Signal for them

I too have no social media nor smartphone, but this made me cringe...I TOTALLY understand his pain-point and it's tough to not be on Whatsapp, but to go above-and-beyond for privacy reasons, and then install an app on someone's phone without their consent?

But it is a great article! I love the watch and it's something I'm going to look into for myself!

bszupnick··on Israel, Cyprus and Greece agree to link power grids via subsea cable

bszupnick··on How to Revive a Dead Language
Thanks for sharing!

With the creation and proliferation of Modern Hebrew, there was a cost, though. Yiddish, Judeo-Arabic (the language Maimonides wrote a lot of literature in), and Ladino were victims of the centralization of Hebrew as the common language for Jews.

Yiddish is a German dialect, Judeo-Arabic an Arabic dialect, and Ladino is a Spanish dialect and are all dying/dead languages with attempted revival movements in their own right, but nothing with too much steam and this article lays out a potential reason why; aside from traditional, historic, or cultural reasons, there's no real societal reason for these languages in today's world.

bszupnick··on Robinhood now has a 1-Star rating on the Google Play Store
My understanding is that Robinhood didn't actually block these purchases but rather the service they use to buy/sell stocks blocked it called Citadel

So it's not Robinhood, persay, but rather Citadel.

Why did Citadel block purchasing of GME stock? Because Citadel just invested 2 billion dollars in Melvin Capital Management; one of the hedge funds that has a lot to lose as long as the GME stocks keep going up.

bszupnick··on Twitter suspends the account of Venezuela's new National Assembly
I agree with other answers here, but as a pushback, maybe it's not Twitter but rather the press and spotlight on it? There was an obvious "bump" after the insurrection, but I wonder if it reverted to it's mean and now we're just focused on that metric as we weren't before.
bszupnick··on Linux and Powershell
I think the reason I've been avoiding Powershell is specifically the pattern of `Verb-Noun -Option argument` the author brings up.

I'm not saying it's not "better" (however you measure that) but I think it's very wordy and that's always been a turn-off and barrier of entry for me.

some examples:

pwd --> Set-Location

ls --> Get-ChildItem

cp --> Copy-Item

I totally understand how bash's sometimes seemingly random shortcuts or acronyms can ALSO be a huge barrier of entry (just as it was for me!) and the straightforwardness of Powershell is a lot clearer, but personally now that I'm "in" on the short-hand of bash, it's been hard to start using Powershell.

bszupnick··on Show HN: Compare prices that US hospitals charge patients, insurance companies
Same happened to me. A test with insurance cost $3000 with insurance. They paid $2250 leaving me with $750.

I asked how much it would be without insurance and they quoted me $350.

bszupnick··on Why ‘Useless’ Surgery Is Still Popular (2016)
There's a difference between "elective" and "useless".

Cosmetic surgeries are elective, where as surgeries that the patient is made to believe will help them with an ailment but wont, are useless.

bszupnick··on Protect domains that don’t send email
Shoutout to dmarcian.com.

I don't work for them and am actually a new customer, but getting your domain safe from a DMARC perspective SOUNDS easy until you realize you do want SOME people "spoofing your emails". Mailgun, SendGrid, Greenhouse, Shopify, Google Calendar, etc.

We live in a world where our companies outsource a lot of the logic and many send emails on our behalf so to discern between that and "spoofing" takes some config that DMARCian was super helpful with.

I'm just a happy customer and wanted to share!
