But there is a lot of software in aviation. And it is slow to develop, and expensive. And it has defects.

In general, it is of high quality.

budman1··on AI isn't replacing SREs, it's deskilling them
Try again. Commercial aviation, with people on board going between point A and point B.

That 2nd pilot makes up for lot's of impossible branches in the fault tree.

But, at this point in history, they are paying through the nose. As they say.

Cut dev salaries by a factor of 3, and then it would be normal.

budman1··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
I love that analogy "take a telescope to a fruit bearing tree, point at the roots and say look its sucking out all the nutrients from the soil."

But, can we say that H1B and immigration is what fueled the current boom. Or maybe it just went along for the ride.

budman1··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
I read that MS was looking to supply some of the 'load bearing' material for the Arch.

Middle america is full of experienced EE's making $100K a year. After 20 years at the same company.

And they are good at it.

O-1 is a strictly regulated visa. Limited to Nobel Prize winners, Influencers, and Underwear models.

H1B is for cheap java devs.

budman1··on US Suspends Visa Program for Tech Firms Including Microsoft
thanks for the insightful reply.
budman1··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
It does impact H1B abuse. How the pipeline works:

#1. Young, eager tech employee from India enrolls in Masters program at US mid-tier university.

#2. Completes course work with 90% other students from India in Florida, Texas, or California.

#3. Gets internship job as part of OPT. (Optional Practical Training)

#4. After 1 (or 2 years for STEM), employer puts in for H1B.

#5. After a round or two of H1B, employer starts the PERM process for a green card.(Tough journey for someone from India... I agree)

Young techie is now 32 years old. Perhaps they marry a US Citizen, and a different pathway opens up. Perhaps they transition to a "genius visa" and then have a different pathway. Perhaps the US government changes policy. It takes a long time but you are living and working in the US during the whole experience.

Stopping this path breaks the chain. If there is no path to citizenship, even a long one, then H1B will stop being so attractive.

Note the pathway for foreign students has been closed. Check on the MS program enrollments at most mid tier schools. Down 50%, 70%, 95%....

unsavory, yes. stolen a bit strong.
budman1··on What makes software development engineering
I would argue that they are substantially different in definition, but blurred together in practice.

Computer Science is a science. It is not focused on building things; rather on learning things.

The "dot com boom" and subsequent 25 years had such an employment need that everything turned into "programming means FAANG means I am rich"

Business Data Processing and Management Information Systems is more applicable to a majority of the 'software engineers' today.

budman1··on What makes software development engineering
I suspect it was statics and dynamics (2 courses), heat transfer, electrical circuit theory (2 courses), differential equations, and complex variables. Along with some pre-reqs.

In the past it was not uncommon for every 'engineering' degree to require the basic sophomore level classes for mechanical and electrical engineering. (inThePast = years<1990)

budman1··on What makes software development engineering
well said.
budman1··on Claude partial outage
Right behind you with fortran.
budman1··on Ask HN: Will you take the $5k from Trump?
Sure. But it will only have the purchasing power of $4500 once the glut of printed money hits the economy.

(/s it is a stupid idea. i am not voting for anyone on the orange squad)

Using DDS to deliver data to X machines over multicast, with some real time (soft) QOS is a powerful solution.

For things like avionics, industrial automation, etc.

I think if the server world ever thought about the advantages of multicast, it might solve some problems there.

There are about 5 viable vendors in this space, and about 6 open source projects out there floating around.

And interoperability between vendors is very good. IMHO.

budman1··on German Rheinmetall open-sources its Battlesuite connected weapon system protcol
why the hate on DDS?

seems like a perfect fit.

budman1··on Let's make quality the norm again
There are two kinds of lots. 'normal' lots will sell a car, and the financing comes from a finance company. could be a bank, could be a credit union, could be a business that provides money to car purchasers. the normal lot has markup on the price, and also gets a kickback from the finance company. the car buyer does not pay, the finance company has a problem.

'buy here, pay here' lots sell a car, and do the financing. They buy cars at auction, fix them if they have to, then sell them. The down payment money usually covers the auction cost of the car. Then every 2 weeks, the buyers drops by with a payment. The buyer stops paying, the car is repossessed. And then it is sold again. The dealer wins in both directions; the buyer pays a lot of money in finance charges, and if it is repossessed then you don't have to buy new inventory at the auction.

Poor people with bad credit way over pay for cars both ways. One a little worse than the other.

budman1··on Introduction to AI Engineering
engineering requires the application of math and science. "AI Engineering" ain't either.
budman1··on How to write an effective software design document
It's really great just to force thinking through the problem.

Throw the document away, it doesn't have any value.

But thinking through what you are going to do, in some detail, is valuable.

For the record, the honorable governer of texas, a mr. abbott, pledges his undivided love for the Donald.

And he has publicly denounced Flock cameras and data center development in the past month.

Amazing what polling does to a politician.

budman1··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
All of the US protests in the last 10 years have been mild. Sure a couple of Waymos get burned up, but they are easy to capture :)

Get all those folks marching, you aren't going to get good decisions out of everyone.

But the expression of the people is hard for those in power to ignore.
