buildops··on Ask HN: What are best tools for web scraping?
Why are you looking to scrape? Here's a list of some scraper bots: https://www.incapsula.com/blog/web-scraping-bots.html

buildops··on Sith Spam Bots Take a Page from a Star Wars Novel(s)
Really scary how it's easy to hide spam. But hey, at least they are Star Wars fans, I guess.

Time to move to Incapsula
buildops··on Intel to invest $7B in factory in Arizona, employ 3,000
I visited their fab in Israel. Amazing place and they are Israel's top high tech employee.

This is highly technical, high R&D stuff. Only their fabs in the US and a few other places (Israel, Ireland) can do that. But, in Israel they get preferential tax treatment (because otherwise they will leave and go to Ireland or the US).

So I wonder what would have happened had Trump not been president, or alternatively, what tax breaks he promised.

Was a great conference and we had a great time speaking (Parallel Computing strategies by Dori Exterman). Would love to know your feedback.
buildops··on Why I Still Use Python for High Performance Scientific Computing
Absolutely and it is even easier if you use Ceemple for your IDE
buildops··on Why Americans dress so casually
Yup, the French are well dressed. In Israel wearing jeans is fancy
buildops··on Auto companies are lacking key ingredients for the future of the automobile
This is why you have automated companies like Mobileye which provide the innovation in autos
buildops··on Getting rid of free office snacks doesn't come cheap
How long is it going to take the employees to leave - especially the best ones?

Employees are motivated by intrinsic motivations such as feeling valued. These little things help it. Sadly, the CEOs need to go back to business school and re-learn organizational behavior.

buildops··on Ask HN: How is your code/build/test/deploy flow organized?
We use IncrediBuild - it speeds up our development and CI. C++ dev on Visual Studio with some teams running C# and CI into Jenkins. The C# team has more automated unit tests with MSTest, which is where they shine
buildops··on Startup and product without sales and marketing?
NO! NO! NO! NO! What product are you reaching? What is your business model? What features belong in the product? Who are you reaching?

Marketing should be the FIRST thing you do. https://hbr.org/1991/01/marketing-is-everything

buildops··on Ask HN: How do we get our first sale?
Have you done marketing? Do you have a marketing plan? Who is your target audience - your first buyer? Ads don't help if the people who are likely to buy from a no name (regardless of quality) don't know about you.

First thing is to develop a marketing plan - target audience/first market, then promotional channels, price (cheaper isn't always better - if you are priced like a cheap Chinese knock off but are high quality Italian fashion, I won't trust your claim), and product - which you are working on

buildops··on Israeli startup Everything.me shuts down, despite raising $35M in funding
Unfortunately this is a problem with Israeli companies that look for quick exits and don't really invest in businesses (sales/marketing/business & marketing strategy)
buildops··on Everything.me shuts down, despite $35M in funding, 15M app install
Unfortunately this is a problem with Israeli companies that look for quick exits and don't really invest in businesses (sales/marketing/biz & marketing strategy)
buildops··on EverythingMe closes down despite raising $37.5M
Sad thing is that they were able to raise that much money while other companies who have a clear biz model of sales can't raise that kind of money. More buzzwords=more funding
buildops··on Ask HN: How important is exiting your company?
Sell. Will make it easier for you to raise money on your next company and even if you sell at a discount (say $1m exit or even less), don't disclose the terms, and you will have a much easier time in the future.
buildops··on Ask HN: System visualization tools?
IncrediBuild offers visualization of your build process (Linux and Windows) https://www.incredibuild.com/
buildops··on Ask HN: Build it and they will come or 50% marketing?
Product is NOT enough. However, you need to look at marketing holistically. In business school they teach the "4Ps of marketing." One is Promotion. Another, though, is product.

You need all of them (price and place are the other two Ps) to have a successful startup company.

There's a ton of money in it. IronSource, a few year old startup, is a litte-known unicorn rolling in money. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IronSource
buildops··on Ask HN: What hours do you work? (and what country/job)
Very interesting. I always thought the stereotype of France was that they don't work a lot. That sounds very similar to my experiences.
buildops··on Some companies in Sweden are testing a six-hour work day
So ultimately what hours do most tech/knowledge companies work in the US? 9-5? 9-6? I've also heard stories of 9-9 or worse but wonder how much is startup myth.

buildops··on Ask HN: Would you get an MBA at the Technion?
Just FYI, you can get a $5000 scholarship, if you're accepted. Just tell them you saw it on Hacker News & you want the "Bring a Friend" scholarship.

And the copywriting of the website is very different than the program, which includes professors from Oxford, Columbia, LBS, INSEAD (Dan Kahenemann's thesis advisor!) and the Technion

buildops··on Ask HN: What are your biggest frustrations with Linux development?
Are you having issues with speed? You can't accelerate Scons or most other Make tools, and CI is still slow when running thousands of tests.
