calciphus··on Your Phone Is About to Stop Being Yours: 70 Days Until Lockdown
The 24 hour waiting period is only once per account, not on every activation, or even every device.
calciphus··on Apple says no one using Lockdown Mode has been hacked with spyware
Only if they keep refusing to pay bug bounties!
calciphus··on A Pro Meticulously Restores a Damaged Oil Painting [video]
If you like this sort of restoration, the BBC show "Repair Shop" is a lovely and wholesome show where master craftspeople fix people's family heirlooms. In the US it's all available on YouTube, elsewhere on various services.

calciphus··on An AI Company Just Fired Someone for Endorsing Human Extinction
Take a look at "A City on Mars" https://www.acityonmars.com/ for a detailed analysis and a pretty entertaining book!
calciphus··on The narrowest escalator in New York City
Really? I use active elevators in SF literally every day. Embarcadero and Montgomery Bart stations. Where in the city are you with no active escalators?
calciphus··on Rising odds asteroid that briefly threatened Earth will hit moon
It is unlikely that the amount of debris would reach Kessler Syndrome-levels of orbital pollution, which is what you are describing.
calciphus··on How to boil great eggs 80% of the time
6.5 minutes is soft boiled for a large (in US egg sizing) egg. Soft boiled eggs don't have fully set yolks or firm whites. These are the kinds of eggs you use for ramen.

If you want a fully set yolk you need more time (about 10 min or so), but that's a personal preference.

See: https://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-boil-eggs-perfectly-every-t...

calciphus··on Mayo Clinic's secret weapon against AI hallucinations: Reverse RAG in action
I read this as "what caused this statement to appear in the summary". Was it the source materials or the LLM base model / hallucination?
calciphus··on Scotland's first 'enclosed' salmon farm to open on Loch Long
Interestingly, Washington State (US) banned this back in 2017. I remember when I was younger actually getting these kinds of farms pointed out on a boat trip. The boat captain mocked them because they still legally called themselves "wild caught", since they existed in open water instead of farms.

calciphus··on California's future depends on how leaders rebuild after the Los Angeles fires
LA is one of the most car-centric cities I've ever seen. "we can have less parking" would require a fundamental shift in culture.

Doing it right after a major fire where people are alive precisely because they were able to put themselves and a few belongings into their personal vehicle and go where they could shelter with friends or family is bordering on an impossible ask.

calciphus··on Tesla Sales Are Tanking in Europe
Not arguing, but what is UE in this context?
calciphus··on GM exits robotaxi market, will bring Cruise operations in house
By that logic, also the CO2 footprint of manufacturing and transporting the fuel for an equivalent ICE vehicle, which is always conveniently left out of such calculations.
calciphus··on California scientists accidentally find nuclear fever dream in Arctic snow
Sometimes headlines change after publishing. In this particular case it matches for me (without translating).
calciphus··on Chegg is on its last legs after ChatGPT sent its stock down
GP started with the premise "we don't need one printed in the 21st century".

A more generous reading of that argument might be "we don't need one authored in the 21st century", not that textbooks would never need reprinting and last forever through two dozen owners

calciphus··on LAPD raid goes from bad to farce after gun allegedly sucked onto MRI machine
I suspect "MRI-strength electromagnet" falls into a different budget category than "medical grade and certified imaging system", including but not limited to "MRI removed from hospital and junked because it's no longer maintained / useful / accurate enough". They are pretty resourceful
calciphus··on [dead]
I don't mean to post a low-effort response, but Betteridge's law of headlines seems to apply here.

If the answer to the question posed in the headline was "yes" they would have stated it as such.

Instead it seems that "don't change things despite the world changing, decreased availability of resources, and increased completion for said scarce resources" is the main thrust of the post?

Maybe I misread but I tried

Seasoned product manager (17yrs as a PM) looking for next gig! Spent the last 4 years in startups (including hypergrowth). Lifelong learner, strong technical background (former dev). Worked with companies from 5 to 5000.

calciphus··on Boeing Starliner Stuck on Space Station as More Leaks Discovered
I'm no expert, but I'd assume "cleared for emergency evacuation in space" means "if the alternative is imminent, certain death - this option is better".
calciphus··on Stellantis CEO confirms $25k Jeep EV
My understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) is that the tariffs are based on the source location of the battery components. Assembly doesn't matter unless you start mining lithium in NAFTA? That's why it's gonna hit some ebikes and the like.
calciphus··on The Prophet Who Failed
I've known more than a few ex-religious of varying types who in young adulthood have to find an explanation for why:

- they are not at all who the faiths they were raised by said they should be - they know there's not actually anything wrong with themselves (or others like them), despite what their faith taught them

Squaring these two deeply personal realizations is challenging. People take many paths. Your interaction is an outlier, but by no means the most extreme I've encountered.

calciphus··on Looking Glass launches new 3D displays
This is typical of displays - but not of holograms, which have historically been able to display only a single static image.
calciphus··on Teslas Can Still Be Stolen with a Cheap Radio Hack–Despite New Keyless Tech
Chop shops to steal what? Tires? Window glass? There's not much to part out on an EV.
calciphus··on Teslas Can Still Be Stolen with a Cheap Radio Hack–Despite New Keyless Tech
I get value from not having to carry keys. That's less bulk for me. I carry no keys at this point I my life, and it's great.

Locks are a societal agreement, not an impenetrable shield. My car is not a fortress or a safe. It's covered in glass. Having a mechanical switch inside a glass box is no more secure if your threat model is "someone technically advanced and highly motivated".

calciphus··on Emory Awards, Then Suspends Students Behind Study-Aide App
So the business school awarded money to develop a morally ambiguous (but likely profitable) "study aide" app, and the school ethics board said that creating and using it violated their cheating policies.

Sounds like the most realistic lesson that business school could have taught?

calciphus··on Apple's Regular Mac Base RAM Boosts Ended When Tim Cook Took Over
If we are doing anecdotes, a single tab Google doc with Grammarly running can easily surpass 4Gb of ram, especially if the doc is over about 30 pages. Use cases like that are not particularly uncommon.
calciphus··on I'm no longer involved at Signal
Surely if you're concerned about privacy, an indelible public record of all transactions you made in and out isn't the way to accomplish that?
