calgaryeng··on RFK Jr.: HHS moves to restore public trust in vaccines
You are apt to be wrong.
calgaryeng··on Mudge's redacted Twitter whistleblower disclosure [pdf]
More (content inside the brackets than) out!
calgaryeng··on 51% of young voters believe humanity could be wiped out within 15 years
If I could downvote this comment, I would.
calgaryeng··on I used to fear being a nobody, then I left social media
> brother’s wives posting about their kids and stuff like that

Either that is a misplaced apostrophe, or you are revealing more about your family than you intended! Punctuation is important :)

calgaryeng··on Water found on a potentially life-friendly alien planet
Peak pedantry - I love it
calgaryeng··on Water found on a potentially life-friendly alien planet
Isn't it odd to think that one day, there will be a top post on Hacker News: "Alien Life Discovered on Nearby Planet (430 points)".
calgaryeng··on Companies Use Borrowed Billions to Buy Back Stock, Not to Invest
That's not how business works.

- Corporate tax vs. individual tax - Deferred tax assets - Sum-of-the-parts valuations - Internal project NPVs > NPV of investments available to an investor

calgaryeng··on Geoff Ralston taking over as President of YC
> Then we got a YC interview and were rejected for what (I think objectively) was a pretty random reason

I don't think you can expect to be completely objective/unbiased in this kind of situation...

calgaryeng··on Things Got Weird for Stablecoin Tether
> But it seems unfair to hold Tether up to a higher standard than even our most established banks.

You mean standards held on banks that are insured/backstopped by the government, have mass-adoption amongst the vast majority of the population, are regulated, and have disclosure requirements through securities regulators?

calgaryeng··on GitHub publishes DMCA deletion notifications sent by Bilibili
"Enterprise Value" is one of the legitimate measures of company size, and is defined as market capitalization + net debt.

You can think of this as equivalent to the size of the company because it would be the amount of money you'd need (roughly speaking) to buy the entire company outright.

calgaryeng··on Updates from YC
> Cash flow is much harder to fake than earnings

Unrealized gains on private, illiquid investments are neither earnings, nor cash flow.

calgaryeng··on Updates from YC
On the contrary - GAAP earnings give the most accurate picture of cold hard cash. That is the reason they exist , and securities regulators are specific about its definition.

Paper gains are notoriously easy to stretch.

calgaryeng··on Airtable CEO on the continued importance of getting a ‘unicorn’ valuation
I'm reasonably certain that the starting point for public valuations is not the most recent private valuations. These deals are typically centered around public valuation comps (i.e. other similar companies) based off of revenues/EBITDA/etc.
calgaryeng··on Ahead of IPO, Airbnb achieves profitability for second year in a row
Just an FYI from a native english speaker - sums of money do not use the plural version of the value unit.

i.e. should be "raised $4.4 billion" not "raised $4.4 billions"

calgaryeng··on Vue.js: the good, the meh, and the ugly
I think the other person was talking about quantitative data (e.g. from Google Analytics), not qualitative data from customer conversations / complaints.
calgaryeng··on From Java to Go, and Back Again (2016)
Your comment seems largely unnecessary.
calgaryeng··on Uber’s Losses Widen as SoftBank Launches Bid to Buy Shares
Marketing and ride subsidies?
calgaryeng··on $300m in cryptocurrency' accidentally lost forever due to bug
This is comical. Anyone who tells you that currency was actually worth $300MM is out of their mind. This is an interesting experiment, but seems more like a pump-and-dump.
calgaryeng··on Our Odd Startup: 3½ Guys, No VC, Profitability, and Patience
Overconfident comes to mind....
calgaryeng··on Dropbox taking entire building in Mission Bay – biggest lease in city history
For public companies that are covered by equity analysts, converting PP&E to OPEX is typically favorable from a valuation perspective.
calgaryeng··on Bitumen balls could be a pipeline-free way to transport Alberta oil
You should be aware that there are a number of oil sources that are far more carbon-intensive than the Canadian Oil Sands.

Many of which ship direct to the United States. One is even produced IN the United States (Bakersfield, CA).

On a wells-to-wheels basis, Canadian oil sands are only 6-8% more carbon-intensive than typical light crude (e.g. Saudi), and it comes from a politically-friendly country that supports female rights, human rights in general, and is not bombing their neighbours.

What you say regarding disruption of large areas of wilderness is true when it comes to tailings ponds, but you should also be aware that the vast majority of recent development (and probably most go-forward) is via in-situ extraction that does not require those tailings ponds.

Source: I am a chemical engineer and work directly in this industry.

calgaryeng··on Bootstrap 4 Beta
Bootstrap is great and I used it on a couple projects. Unfortunately I gave up waiting on a V4 release and started using Semantic UI. This has been a long time coming!
calgaryeng··on ClusterHQ is shutting down
- December 22, 2016: ClusterF*ed - December 15, 2016: Reflecting on a Year of Change and What’s to Come in 2017 ("All in all, 2016 was full of tests and triumphs and I can promise that 2017 will also be a big year for the company.")

I'll be the first to admit I don't know anything about this company, but that's an interesting change of heart.

calgaryeng··on Warned of a Crash, Startups in Silicon Valley Narrow Their Focus
The simple act of using/leveraging technology does not a technology company make.
calgaryeng··on Misfortune
Sue them for libel then?
calgaryeng··on Startups need to respect the laws of retail physics
> The stock market doesn’t reward big acquisitions in these categories as they often do with Silicon Valley giants, and they’re expected to justify these purchases, at least partially, on financials. This massively constrains the realm of possible outcomes.

Read this twice, and try not to LOL.

calgaryeng··on Curtsy (YC S16) lets women borrow dresses from their neighbors
I seem to remember reading about a service almost exactly like this not that long ago (~1 year maybe)? It failed.... Am I going crazy?
calgaryeng··on Mpemba effect: warmer water can freeze faster than colder water
This is not done in practice. Be careful getting engineering advice from the Free Dictionary.
calgaryeng··on State of Clojure 2015: Survey Results
> For backend web development Rails is still miles ahead of any Clojure workflow.

I feel the same way. And in my opinion, is a symptom of the "library vs framework" culture that is present in the Clojure community. While that is probably a good stance for the first 2 points in your list, in web development there are just so many already-solved-problems that you have to re-work without a framework.

Luminus looked good but seems to be shunned by the community.
