callumjones··on Netflix says its brief Apple TV app integration was a mistake
Another theory is this was meant to launch with the Apple announcement on Tuesday.
callumjones··on Security Issue: Cloud Site Manager presented me your consoles, not mine
Wow, I always wondered why the Access Reader Pro had such a weird design - it was just a repurposed product from a completely different catagory.
callumjones··on Changing the Android captive portal page (2020)
gstatic.com - the backbone of the internet.
callumjones··on Microsoft Flight Simulator – E3 2019 – Announce Trailer
It will be on Game Pass which is for Windows and Xbox. Possibly xCloud too enabling it to potentially run on mobile platforms?
callumjones··on Credit cards automatically providing updated card info to subscribing merchants
At Netflix’s size with a need for payment processing redundancy I imagine they would store and vault it.
callumjones··on Support of Ruby 2.3 has ended
The question should be: how many C extensions does the average Ruby developer have in their Gemfile. And my guess would ranging from a few to many.
callumjones··on Support of Ruby 2.3 has ended
I'd disagree with the upgrade from 2.3 to 2.4:

> Though ISO/IEC 30170:2012 doesn’t specify details of the Integer class, Ruby had two visible Integer classes: Fixnum and Bignum. Ruby 2.4 unifies them into Integer. All C extensions which touch the Fixnum or Bignum class need to be fixed.

callumjones··on Ola Bini, Swedish Software Developer with Ties to Assange, Arrested in Ecuador
But we haven’t seen the full report, right?
callumjones··on AWS, MongoDB, and the Economic Realities of Open Source
It's easier for AWS for accommodate all their customer's needs (MySQL, MongoDB, Postgres) and reduce the cost of switching than it is to convince them to rewrite an application or legacy application to leverage say DynamoDB. The benefit of DynamoDB is great, but it's just one slice of the computing pie.
callumjones··on AWS gives open source the middle finger?
Where was the outrage when they implemented the MySQL and Postgres interfaces on Aurora?
callumjones··on Amazon's cloud business is competing with its own customers
It’s also them realizing people are willing to switch to Google for managed Kubernetes over using mediocre ECS.
callumjones··on Raspberry Pi WLAN setup
Doesn't this just work over Bluetooth for the initial config? The internet isn't useful at this point because it isn't connected to a WLAN.
callumjones··on Raspberry Pi WLAN setup
But this is just the process of connecting it to a wireless network, which would be the hacker's network? The risk seems pretty contrived?

You could make the same argument for other assisted headless installations: speakers, smart plugs, etc.

callumjones··on Sprint Is Throttling Skype, Study Finds
Do they or is it just indirect via a consortium? Looking at this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEA-ME-WE_3 it doesn’t look to be directly managed by Sprint.
callumjones··on Dropbox traffic infrastructure: Edge network
This has to be HN at its worst. Reducing a complicated file sharing and collaboration tool to an insecure and highly technical protocol.

Dropbox: I can upload a file super easily and share a simple & secure link with someone who just has a web browser.

FTP: I can upload a file to an FTP server I've either configured on my server or rented online. I'll then provide an FTP url to friend with instructions on how they should login and what FTP client they should use on their chosen device.

EDIT: This could be sarcasm, if I didn't pick up on then feel free to downvote me to hell.

EDIT 2: Thanks to the comments, this is sarcasm. I messed up. Sorry rakoo.

callumjones··on Portal from Facebook: Voice Enabled Hands-Free Video Calling
> Like other voice-enabled devices, Portal only sends voice commands to Facebook servers after you say, “Hey Portal.” You can delete Portal's voice history in your Facebook Activity Log.

It’s very much connected to their servers.

callumjones··on Upgrading GitHub from Rails 3.2 to 5.2
I'm not sure if you can compare upgrading a VM/platform that is usually designed for backwards compatibility to upgrading a framework.
callumjones··on The Performance Cost of CORS Requests on Single-Page Applications
The problem with WS is that is significantly more complex than HTTP when it comes to caching.

With WS you can’t leverage a CDN hosted solution and instead would need some complicated CDN that is aware of state.

I like HTTP because it just works, especially behind buggy corporate and mobile network firewalls.

callumjones··on EU to recommend that member states abolish daylight saving time
> always a, er, special place

Can you expand on this? Or is this an east vs west viewpoint?

callumjones··on Blackmagic eGPU – Thunderbolt 3 external graphics processor
I’m playing PUBG on a MB Pro Mid-2015 (integrated graphics only) with a Akitio Node TB3 + nVidia 1060. It worked out of the box on Windows 10.

Yes I’m losing some bandwidth stepping down to TB2 but it’s enough to satisfy some casual gaming.

callumjones··on Lyft Follows Uber Into Bike-Sharing Lane, Buying Owner of CitiBike
Wouldn't you still have to do "fullstack development" to create the clone?
callumjones··on Archive of Operating Systems
Is this a more extensive archive of OS screenshots (especially without all flavors of Linux that use the same DE): https://guidebookgallery.org/screenshots
callumjones··on Australian government proposes to limit cash payments for purchases to AUD$10K
If you're going to do illegal stuff, I don't think carrying around a lot cash if going to weigh too heavily on your mind. You're either going to carry it in a car or have a person carry it for you.
callumjones··on Facebook monthly visits down 5% in April
How is this measured? I think the usage of their mobile apps is significantly greater than visits to "facebook.com", you could argue then that more customers are moving to apps only.
callumjones··on Things I’ve learned using serverless
> old-time request-response style of a website with a session managed by the server

Breaking news: your app still does this. You just moved the responsibility of request/response elsewhere.

callumjones··on OpenSimpleLidar
It could be related to the fact that LIDAR tech was supposedly stolen from Waymo.

callumjones··on Au Revoir
See my first comment.
callumjones··on Au Revoir
They are a container company, not a scale your blog + scale your database + scale your cache + scale your security company.
callumjones··on Au Revoir
Because a blog at scale is still a complicated piece of software? You need to implement caching, DoS protection, security - something a hosted blog vendor might have experience in.
callumjones··on Au Revoir
I don't understand why companies take on hosting their blog and marketing page (usually the homepage) when it isn't their core competency and a distraction for the engineering team to maintain.

It looks like this is true for Docker which seems to be hosting it themselves instead of using Wordpress.com

» nslookup blog.docker.com Server: 192.168.86.1 Address: 192.168.86.1#53

Non-authoritative answer: blog.docker.com canonical name = blog-1556129762.us-east-1.elb.amazonaws.com.
