“Black October” sounds a lot like Red Scare.
calmworm··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
Clearly potentially profitable. Not clearly profitable.

“AGI” has been achieved - but only as a growth hype buzzword.
calmworm··on Apple: Switch to Safari (From Chrome)
Well, I tried... I keep multiple tabs open for daily work. Safari just blanks them out seemingly at will. The tab still has the title of the site in it, but the page is blank, the url bar is blank, no option to refresh. It's just gone, like I opened a brand new tab. Maybe I'll try again in another year.

Profit. Always.
calmworm··on Barcodes are about to go extinct
The trajectory of this is heavily optimized packaging design, isn’t it? Which overshoots simple codes integrated with any design.
calmworm··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Lonesome Dove has been mentioned many times in this thread. Was it recently revealed/brought up on a tech blog or is this some sort of AI-related “what should I read” convergence? Not at all a criticism, but curiosity.

I just finally finished “The Ferryman” (Justin Cronin), and “Vera, or Faith” (Shteyngart). I have “Reverse Centaur” (Doctorow) open and “Rainbow’s End” (Vernor Vinge) on deck.

> To be fair

Opening with “to be fair” doesn’t make a straw man fair.

calmworm··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
Yes.
calmworm··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
What do you propose other than “lol” and sarcasm?

Society at large has tools and systems in place to better deal with a violent person, student or otherwise.

I have zero expectations of any business. If they have an expectation to be paid then they need to offer something of value. Their costs to operate are not my concern.
calmworm··on The worst spam emails: iLands AI agent hustle
Block domain, report spam. It’s a tiny yet satisfying action each day.
calmworm··on I spent $220 on Google app ads and 60% of the installs were robots
The moment the cost went from free to more-than-free is “when that happened.” I’m not willing to participate.

I don’t use YouTube at all but I can still answer - Because $16 will become $20, $30, $50 … and then they will begin to show ads again anyway.

Is this a typo? 20 min ad?! I don’t use YouTube.

And when that developer copies and pastes useful code snippets from the internet into this product you’ve commissioned them to create? Also not copyrightable?

> If your entire product is LLM generated you sure as hell have no right to place any license on there

Something you’ve created from nothing because of the tool you’ve used to create it should not be allowed to be licensed?

It’s just a question meant for discussion. It’s already been decided AI generated art can not be copyrighted. Curious about the future of AI generated software, code, etc… and what having an Anthropic watermark on it will mean at that time.
