calypso··on Namecheap has been down for six hours
It’s still down and prolonged for another 4 hours. My email has been down since 9am.
calypso··on Pinterest sacks two engineers for creating software to identify fired workers
The 15% included contractors. Many of the Mobile developers were South American contractors.
calypso··on Don't animate height
You’re still okay with wasting 6% CPU and 1% gpu time on a simple note taking app?
calypso··on Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary Documentary [video]
Is this from the Secret Tape crew (NoClip)? The 25th Half-life 1 documentary was done by them.
calypso··on Why is the iOS keyboard getting worse every year?
The iOS 17 swipe keyboard is the worst it’s ever been. I have to constantly go back and edit my discord messages.
calypso··on COBOL for GCC Development
COBOL on Dreamcast when?
calypso··on Objective-C and Foundation running on a Sega Dreamcast
I knew someone would catch that. I caught that after looking back at the tweet.

It’s definitely been a hot minute since working without ARC.

calypso··on Native port of Digital Research's seminal 1977 operating system CP/M to the 6502
I have so many CP/M programs my grandfather wrote in my garage. Never got to see them run but it’s cool to see people are still messing around with the OS in some capacity.
calypso··on Shopify to Acquire Delivrr for $2.1B
I worked on the shop app too (backend and iOS app). Small world.

I’ve moved on from shopify but still use the app.

calypso··on Running macOS in a Virtual Machine on Apple Silicon Macs
I haven’t noticed any problems for the use case I’m using it for.

I’m giving it 8GB of ram and 6 cores/12 threads. VM is running on pcie ssd. Speed is good.

No gpu is in my server so it’s using a basic VNC connection. If you add a gpu and pass it through the desktop experience would be much better. However I only needed to do this to do initial setup.

The cool thing about my setup is that it uses a docker container called macinabox which handles the initial Vm configuration and macOS installation, estuary automating the “hackintosh” process.

calypso··on Running macOS in a Virtual Machine on Apple Silicon Macs
Thanks for the clarification.
calypso··on Running macOS in a Virtual Machine on Apple Silicon Macs
Mac stadium is a large Ci/CD provider for macOS. They rack mount iMac Pro’s and Mac minis.
calypso··on Running macOS in a Virtual Machine on Apple Silicon Macs
I have a Monterey VM running on my home server inside Unraid with virtualization. I can login to Apple developer accounts. I use this as a macOS gitlab runner VM.

Or is my setup not what you’re describing?

calypso··on I Quit Shopify After Five Months
I was at shopify for 5+ years and recently left.

calypso··on New Jersey needs COBOL programmers for their unemployment claims system
It’s a trap!
calypso··on My 2020 Hackintosh Hardware Spec
Adobe products were not written to take full advantage of high thread counts not GPU bound tasks. This is why their products run much better on Intel chips because they have higher single core speeds.
calypso··on NSA found a dangerous MS software flaw and alerted the firm
They alerted them after using it for 20 years to spy on us? \s
calypso··on Ask HN: Are RSUs worth your loyalty?
Would this only be a problem if they vest in non-uniform quantities? At the company (Shopify) I work for they vest in even amounts over 4 years but you have to wait 1 year to get 1/4 of them then every quarter after that.
calypso··on Alphabet in bid to buy Fitbit
An app store, watch face store, dictation, weather. those features are the reason it requires a server. That's what you give up by not using rebble or similar services.
calypso··on A Primer on Shooting in Manual Mode: Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO [video]
Program modes have even been available on Film cameras going back to the late 80s and early 90s.
calypso··on Canon DSLR Camera Infected with Ransomware over the Air
I'm sorry. I wasn't being serious.

I do shoot film exclusively though. At the lab I buy my film and get it developed, they do sell homemade film. I've seen some fantastic results from the B&W film community members make.

I'm also in the middle of building a dark room in my basement.

FYI I use either Android pay or debit to buy my film

calypso··on Canon DSLR Camera Infected with Ransomware over the Air
Can't trust ATM machines. I make my own film.
calypso··on Canon DSLR Camera Infected with Ransomware over the Air
I'll stick to my film cameras for a bit longer.
calypso··on Record Number of Honeybee Colonies Died Last Winter
My uncle just started a small bee colony on his property. This will help his garden, the surrounding gardens, and the area as a whole. My work also has a few hives on each of our buildings rooftops.

So some people care but a larger majority do not. As humans we, especially in the west, don't care about a problem until it's too late. who cares about the bees when we have the latest iPhone Xr+ Max ultra

calypso··on I think the JavaScript community needs to step up and boycott NPM
If I could edit it I would. I do however stand by my statement here because I know first hand how this CEO operates. I worked at his previous startup and he acted the same way. The same culture, fear, hostility, toxicity was all present.
calypso··on Ask HN: What is an example of a super simple SaaS that is profitable?
I co-run a SaaS company targeted towards funeral homes. We offer a CMS and white labeled obituaries that don't look like they were built in 1998. The subject matter might be a bit mundane but it's very profitable.
calypso··on How Myst Taught a Generation of Gamers to Explore New Worlds
Just today I was looking through old boxes at my parents house. I found my Myst and Riven CDs. I remember playing these games as a kid after my grandfather gave them to me so I would play something other than Doom.
calypso··on Thelio – System76
You mean a pre-2015 Thinkpad?
calypso··on Palm
It’s trying to be a phone companion, like a smart watch but in your pocket. Phones are getting bigger and bigger so this is a way to get a second screen experience without constraining that experience to a 1” screen on your wrist.

I think that’s what they are trying to do. It instantly reminds me of the memory cards of the Dreamcast.

calypso··on Xerox calls off $6.1B sale to Fujifilm
I made the switch over to film from years of shooting digital. I’ve fallen in love with the colours and contrast that the Fuji films give. The blues and greens really pop but overall it’s a muted colour palette - love it.

I can see why they are doing this and Kodak isn’t but it is sad. I’ll probably end up buying up a bunch of Fujifilm and freezing it as well. A lot of the film from Fuji I see in stores is set to expire late 2019.
