A comparison that's obvious to my team is the release cadence of Metabase, which we also self-host. The frequent rollout of new features in Metabase is great and gives me more confidence in the product. But I'm not in the position to decide whether to cough up the $ for the paid version so I suppose it's moot.
Frankly, the dbt product hasn't really evolved much. I've been a bit disappointed with its lack of evolution toward this stuff organically. The "modern data stack" is in kind of in a magic position where they are working at very technical companies but the people using it are not SWEs who can build out the tooling themselves so they are just getting buckets of money without a really big value proposition. My team self hosts a dbt core workflow and it's been almost trivial to build out dbt's paid product ourselves
The FTC continues to do the good, thankless work of making good public policy. I appreciate it.
And if someone takes a picture of your artwork, or takes a picture of your person, and posts that to the internet without your consent? Have you given up your rights then?
My answer: Absolutely not.
The logical extension of this stuff is insane -- why have kids learn to write at all? They can just have an AI do it. Why learn anything? It's all on the internet anyway.
There are plenty of good use cases for AI generated texts. Creating transcripts from audio, writing meeting summaries, and other types of rote, monotonous tasks. Writing a letter from the heart is not one of those things that should be outsourced.
If there's anything on this earth we should value, it's humanity. And the tech giants are chomping at the bit to take that away. It's a sad vision for the future they're pushing
Disagree with this. self hosting email is notoriously difficult. Gotta give the data to somebody. Plus, your work email is either going through MSFT or GOOG, 99% of the time
Couple that with their constantly pushing their own (objectively inferior) client and killing the best ways to browse the site, I've really dropped off on how much I use reddit.
