carlchenet··on Ask HN: Sites like Hacker News but in other languages
Hi, I'm the founder of Le Journal du hacker. Indeed the focus is tighter, mostly tech, Open source/Free Software, individual rights and entrepreneurship.
carlchenet··on Mastodon.technology Shutdown
Enthousiasm is paramount in community work. But managing server infrastructure is more and more complex and it won't go simpler. People should consider joining associations which would be responsible, not individuals. Maybe less servers but larger and better managed ones. Associations are more resilient than individuals.
carlchenet··on How I write and curate the cron.weekly newsletter (2020)
Great newsletter, interesting to know how you curate it.
carlchenet··on Xsolla lays off 150 after an algorithm ruled staff 'unengaged and unproductive'
I'm supposed faking activity is the game when you work for a large company.
carlchenet··on Xsolla CEO says firing using an algorithm-based solution protect minorities
It seems to me this guy should be fired. But good for him if he can disguise his inabilities to manage the transition to full remote. As a employee I would flee such a company.
carlchenet··on Disney claims anyone using a Twitter hashtag is agreeing to their terms of use
Community manager trying to create buzz imho

carlchenet··on Hacking website like HN in French
A bit of history of the project :) We started by using the name "journal du pirate" but lots of French people disliked this name because in French "Pirate" is more associated to illegal hacking, so it would damage the image of the project. After a vote of the early users, we switched to "Journal du hacker".
carlchenet··on Hacking website like HN in French
Tout à fait ! Pour l'instant nous sommes assez orientés France avec aussi des contributions québecoises, mais nous aimerions que l'ensemble des producteurs de contenus IT francophones utilisent l'outil.
carlchenet··on Hacking website like HN in French
Merci ! On existe quand même depuis 5 ans :)
carlchenet··on Paris Mayor: It's Time for a '15-Minute City'
The center of Paris is something like 13-14k€/square meter... The truth is Parisians with average revenues (for Parisians, not for French people) more and more live close to the suburbs (13th, 15th, 18th, 19th, 20th districts) around Paris and the center is full of company's head office, shops and restaurants. So the picture displayed in the article should figure inhabitations on the outside skirts and accommodations in the center.

At the national level, Parisians are an average really rich population and living inside Paris will continue to grow more and more difficult because living in Paris is nowadays a luxury. And nothing will change this situation in a close future.

carlchenet··on WordPad Is Gettings Ads in Windows 10
why using WordPad? So much FOSS alternatives without ads.
carlchenet··on Htop Explained
Awesome article, this HN thread should indicate it was originally published on HN in 2016. As mentioned on the front page "#1 on Hacker News on December 2, 2016"

carlchenet··on Pixelfed – An alternative to centralized image sharing platforms
The social network Mastodon, also based on a Free Software and using Fediverse, reached 2M+ uses recently https://carlchenet.com/do-not-ignore-the-mastodon-social-net...

PixelFed has a possible awesome future ahead!

carlchenet··on The Economics of Running a Curated Newsletter
I think that's a great topic to discuss. Some feedback was already given at https://www.indiehackers.com/forum/the-economics-of-running-...

It also reminds me a great previous discussion here on HN https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14616440

carlchenet··on You Think the Visual Studio Code Binary You Use Is Open Source? Think Again
I strongly agree, as I said in the article by license using VSC your renounce your rights to reverse-engineer the VSC. So you take a legal risk making it and blogging/talking/podcasting about it on Internet and can face legal actions.
carlchenet··on Ask HN: How much passive income do you generate, and from what?
I like the previous thread, thanks for the link!
carlchenet··on Microsoft Is Said to Have Agreed to Acquire GitHub
Some years ago I wrote "The Github Threat" https://carlchenet.com/the-github-threat/ and I'll be delighted to update the conclusion with this quite predictable and logical outcome.
carlchenet··on Ask HN: What websites do you check everyday?
HN, IH, lobste.rs, /r/sideProject, /r/digitalnomad
carlchenet··on 2k+ Users Mastodon Instance Shutdown Shows the Need for Choosing the Good One
I agree, full migration profile is quite needed. But the project is still quite young and improvments were alreday brought for this feature.
carlchenet··on Ask HN: Selling your product before it exists?
Peter Levels https://levels.io/ offered early access to his currently-writing book ... and published it officially 2.5 years later. I could be wrong about the exact timeline but you get the point.
carlchenet··on Ask HN: How did you start your business?
I started freelancing in 2012. Some years after, I started to understand I could never be rich or dissociate my income from my time while freelancing.

Started to build side projects 2 years ago. I roughly get $700/mrr with my 1st side project and my goal this year is $1.2k/mrr in 2018. So still far from being a full-time gig and still freelancing but increasing other revenues, which is my long term goal.

carlchenet··on Ask HN: How did you make your first dollar online?
I just implemented the payment system on my job board https://www.linuxjobs.fr but it was not yet mandatory to pay to post a job offer. Someone thought it was and paid!

Just the "Wow" moment of my side project :) Of course I switched immediately to enforce it was mandatory from now on to pay to post job offers.

carlchenet··on Hackers Are So Fed Up with Twitter Bots They’re Hunting Them Down Themselves
A real hacker move would be to just leave Twitter and go to Mastodon https://joinmastodon.org
carlchenet··on Ask HN: Non-english Tech Newsletters to recommend?
French-speaking FOSS-oriented Tech Newsletter: Le Courrier du hacker https://lecourrierduhacker.com
carlchenet··on Hacker News equivalent for other fields
Le Journal du hacker https://www.journalduhacker.net, basically a lobste.rs-like website for french-speaking FOSS community.
carlchenet··on Many packages suddenly disappeared
I wrote "The Github Threat" about this possible issue https://carlchenet.com/the-github-threat/
carlchenet··on A Year of Developer Journals with jrnl.sh
you're welcome :)
carlchenet··on Ask HN: How do sites like Reddit, HackerNews, etc get initial user content?
I started Le Journal du hacker [1], the French-speaking Hacker News-like website 3 years ago. I was mostly alone for one year feeding the website until the first regular contributors (now co-founders) showed in.

Good things come to those who wait (and work hard).
