carsonfarmer··on Geometric Search Trees
Whoah, I totally hadn't taken the thought experiment this far. This is fantastic! I'd like to explore this further, interested in a quick research chat/sync some time? My email is linked from the paper.
carsonfarmer··on Geometric Search Trees
Pretty cool to see this here. My co-author and I haven't actually officially "released" this yet, so quite neat to see where it is organically showing up! Feedback appreciated y'all!
carsonfarmer··on Geometric Search Trees
Thanks, that's all due to my co-author. Here's what we used: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41589728 (link is to a post from @msy)

You're right, we should delve into a comparison more with respect to prolly trees. We actually have a lot of experience with prolly trees, and have found, in practice, that you need to do a lot of the things that folks like dolt have had to do to make them work nicely. Whereas with G-trees, the basic implementation turns out to be quite nice (and extremely easy to reason about).

One of the biggest benefits of G-trees in my mind, is their ease of implementation. Additionally, we did a lot of work to explore their statistical properties, which doesn't exist for prolly trees (though in hindsight, we have done this, so should probably write it up formally).

Yes this exactly. Another really simple way to do this, is to use alternating leading and trailing zero counts in the hash in your nested G-trees. Simple, and pretty effective.

Whoah, cool. I'm one of the authors of the geometric search tree paper, and we totally hadn't see that paper, but will for sure dig in! Thanks for mentioning it.
carsonfarmer··on Dumb Pipe
Ok, this is quite cool. Also love the name.

Super fun example of the combination of AI and DB. You want to get back exactly what you put in, use a DB! You want something extrapolated from what you put in, AI is pretty great! Also Fireproof is :fire:
carsonfarmer··on Textile Hub: databases, storage, and remote IPFS for app builders
That's awesome, dig right in! And don't hesitate to reach out on our slack: slack.textile.io. We're under active development, so if there's something missing, or a feature that's lacking in documentation (there are, but we're working on it!) let us know.

Just a bunch of useful tools and ideas our team has picked up along the way while being remote only for the past few years.

Super excited to see this out the in the wild! Been following this project for a while now - huge fan of the vision, huge fan of the UX. Congrats!

Check out https://textile.photos (full disclosure, I'm on the team)!
carsonfarmer··on Decentralisation: the next big step for the world wide web
Super late to the game here, but we're (https://textile.photos/) seeing pretty great results on mobile running a 'lite' IPFS peer. Battery consumption is not bad compared to other network-driven apps, and with intelligent swam on/off optimizations, mobile peers can share and pin files quite nicely. It helps if you have a network of 'always on' peers to back them up of course :)

These are 'works in progress' so open to comments and suggestions!

This is actually part 2 in a series I started earlier in the week: https://medium.com/textileio/tutorial-setting-up-an-ipfs-pee...
carsonfarmer··on Show HN: Send secret messages over the decentralized web
A fun little Dapp I made as part of an experiment and tutorial. Obviously you shouldn't use this for sending actual encrypted messages! You can check out the code (https://github.com/textileio/encryptoid) for reference.

Fixed on github, should be live soon(ish)

Should have a fix in the latest code on github, should be live soon(ish)
carsonfarmer··on Show HN: Textile – Return Facebook photo exports back to nicely-named galleries
We just pushed some changes to fix this. If you want quick access, take a look at the code over at: https://github.com/textileio/textile-facebook. Those fixes will go 'live' later. To get it running on your own system right away, you download the zip (click clone or download) and run it locally.

Ok, this looks like this issue: https://github.com/textileio/textile-facebook/issues/4 We'll try to update this soon!
carsonfarmer··on Show HN: Textile – Return Facebook photo exports back to nicely-named galleries
Yes this is a known 'issue': https://github.com/textileio/textile-facebook/issues/2. Unfortunately, some browsers don't like large files being dragged-and-dropped like this. The 'solution' for now seems to be to unzip on your computer, remove the messages folder, re-zip, and try again. This should reduce your zip file significantly. Let me know if that helps at all. We're working on a more permanent fix for this in the mean time.
carsonfarmer··on Show HN: Textile – Return Facebook photo exports back to nicely-named galleries
Hi forcer, when you drag it over the 'drop zone' does the little zip image/icon disappear?
carsonfarmer··on Show HN: Textile – Return Facebook photo exports back to nicely-named galleries
cool idea, though for this small project, we're trying to keep everything self-contained... so no data leaks possible...
carsonfarmer··on Show HN: Textile – Return Facebook photo exports back to nicely-named galleries
The way it works, is that all the Javascript code runs in your browser, that way, there's need for any data to leave your computer... safe and spy-free!
carsonfarmer··on Show HN: Textile – Return Facebook photo exports back to nicely-named galleries
Yes that's right. Also, the code can be inspected here: https://github.com/textileio/textile-facebook. For non-coders, if you are concerned about us using your data (we won't!) you can a) trust us, b) ask someone to check for you, or c) go to the page, turn off your wifi (so you aren't connected to the internet), generate your archive and download, close the page, and then click back on wifi... easy peasy :)
carsonfarmer··on Show HN: Textile – Return Facebook photo exports back to nicely-named galleries
Haha, that would be pretty hypocritical of us! Check out the source to be sure we aren't: https://github.com/textileio/textile-facebook, and if you really want to be sure that's what we're deploying, use your browser's dev tools to inspect the code (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Learn/Common_questi...).

carsonfarmer··on Show HN: Textile – Return Facebook photo exports back to nicely-named galleries
This is in line with what we are building right now at https://www.textile.photos/. See andrewxhill's response above re: mobile and desktop apps that automagically sync with one another. Getting grandma on board is always difficult, but with super simple (and super secure) inter-device linking, we're hoping to lower that barrier to entry big time!
