I vote that you roll with Heroku until you feel so comfortable with the Passenger/Nginx/Capistrano that you're frustrated with the amount you're spend at Heroku because you feel like you could do it yourself.

Point is you have enough to worry about, don't get a VPS till you HAVE to.

Serious question, as I've never had a phone repaired. I have a work paid for phone, if my phone were to stop working I would call Apple and either have a new one shipped to me or go and pick one up (probably go pick it up as I'd like to get it ASAP) when I previously had a blackberry I would have done the same (substituting Apple for Verizon). Can you (at any level of expertise) fix my phone faster that the carrier/provider can replace it?

I created an Evernote notebook called "Links to Read", things that seem interesting I use the Chrome/Evernote clipper to add to that notebook. Every couple of weekends I take an hour or so and read through whatever restrikes my fancy.

in first world countries Cloudvox/Twilio/Tropo can all receive inbound SMS and post the contents to your endpoint. Outside of the first world the costs increase significantly, and I believe both Orange and Clickatel become options to consider.

Cheapest option? You get an unlimited SMS plan on a cellphone that you can download SMS onto a computer from, keep the phone cabled to the computer and process the inbound SMS that what.

That's what we did (basically) before we had HTTP/SIP/SMPP SMS gateways in the cloud.

If you want to survive large scale DDOS you need equipment that can scrub the incoming unvalidated data in real-time and keep up.

Combining Source Based Remotely Triggered Black Holing (RTBH) with uRPF affords you the ability in a sophisticated network to drop a large amount of undesired traffic (especially if it's from simpler DDOS strategies). If you do in fact have the $$/need for the Arbor then inside of black-holing the traffic you send it to the Arbor and let it scrub the packets.

I have almost completely migrated project management tasks to Basecamp, but if Gantt charts were important/needed for me (I used to generate them) I would go back to using http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omniplan/ it is OSX based, but has worked very well for me. There are a couple video tutorials on the site I suggest watching to get a feel for whether or not you'd enjoy using the software.

Is there a difference between Senior Developer and Lead Developer (in your case Lead might mean solo?). VC can sometimes take a long time to work out so I'm not sure we're told enough to know if they are being disingenuous.

But here is the important bit,

Disregarding your mention of discrimination (not relevant to this discussion) you don't feel like you have any upward mobility, and if you don't feel like you have a founder you can talk frankly to about this I think you need to move on.

best way to start is to scratch your own itches, if you pick some arbitrary problem it's much more difficult to maintain steam and actually complete the project (ie learn the skills you want to)
