ccostes··on GPT-Neo – Building a GPT-3-sized model, open source and free
I think calling this a "wild-ass guess" undersells it a bit (either that or we have very different definitions of a WAG).Very well though-through and compelling case.

My biggest question is whether composable models are indeed the general case, which you say they confirmed as evidenced by the shift away from non-profit. It's certainly true for some domains, but I wonder if it's universal enough to enable the ecosystem you describe.

ccostes··on Full text search on 400M US court cases
So a Christmas card list would be illegal? That seems...excessive.
ccostes··on On Apple's Piss-Poor Documentation
I think they know it's bad, they just don't need to make it better because its their OS so they're the only game in town. Developer experience isn't why people write apps for mac/iOS, so there's not much incentive for them to invest in it.
ccostes··on A 20kg hybrid drone that can fly at 50kmh for 4 hours
Why is that?
ccostes··on Greg Joswiak replaces Phil Schiller as head of Apple marketing
He can buy the local Golden Corral any time he wants.
ccostes··on Ask HN: Former software engineers, what are you doing now?
That's awesome! Did you fly helicopters before starting on the instructor path?

Helicopters seem like a blast, but the cost is on another level (and that's speaking as a fixed-wing pilot used to the crazy costs of GA generally).

ccostes··on 3K, 60fps, 130ms: achieving it with Rust
Aside from the Rust aspect (which is cool!), I can't believe we've come this far and still don't have low-latency video conferencing. Maybe I'm overly sensitive, but people talking over each other and the lack of conversational flow drives me crazy with things like hangouts.
ccostes··on Decoding radio telemetry heard on news helicopter video footage with GNU Radio
I'm wondering where the raw video from the helicopter came from originally. My guess is that this isn't something you can do with an SDR and hobbyist equipment, but I would love to be proven wrong.
ccostes··on The Hertz Story Isn’t What You Think
> walking away with millions

I was referring to their normal compensation, should have made that clear.

According to the article the CEO got $700k from the $16MM, and her 2019 cash comp was $3.6MM.

ccostes··on The Hertz Story Isn’t What You Think
Agreed, the "if anything management is getting screwed here" got me good. Still not convinced management, who walked away with millions in cash, got screwed, but it was a well-crafted article.

Edit: I should clarify that by "walking away with millions" I was referring to their normal cash comp. 2019 CEO cash comp was $3.6MM, and she got $700k as a retention bonus.

ccostes··on Boeing cutting more than 12,000 U.S. jobs with thousands more planned
Totally forgot that Boeing owned them. They have been on fire lately with all the new features and I hope this doesn't impact them.
ccostes··on Show HN: How many miles do you think you've scrolled today?
It seems like cursor acceleration (breaking the linearity between pixel and physical distance) would make this non-trivial; curious how you implemented it.
ccostes··on California Supreme Court: Transaction is not required to sue online providers
The court did not rule on whether civil rights were violated, only that they have standing to bring their case:

our opinion does not preclude Square from disputing White’s factual allegations. ... Nor do we express any view on whether a defendant violates the Act by discriminating on the basis of occupation or on White’s adequacy as a representative for a class of bankruptcy attorneys excluded from Square’s services. The question of an individual plaintiff’s standing under the Unruh Civil Rights Act is distinct from the question of that plaintiff’s ability to serve as a representative for a class of allegedly aggrieved individuals.[0]

ccostes··on California Supreme Court: Transaction is not required to sue online providers
To copy a reply from rgbrenner:

The CA SC didn't address that..

our opinion does not preclude Square from disputing White’s factual allegations.

White only won standing to bring his case. He's still prohibited from using Square; and he needs to win his case against Square before that'll change.

ccostes··on Turning Off Autoplaying Previews
Getting 5 seconds when the credits start to stop it from auto-playing the next episode bothers me sooo much more than the previews (also not a fan of those, but mute is good enough for that).
ccostes··on A Thread about Internet Archive's “Silent Killer”
Sounds like what they're doing at Microsoft with Project Silica https://news.microsoft.com/innovation-stories/ignite-project...
ccostes··on Heavy-lift ship lifts entire cruise liner out of the water [video]
The scale of this is so hard to comprehend. Seeing the people standing on the dry-dock below the ship, its just mind-blowing to see how massive both of these things are.
ccostes··on Write Python inline in your Rust code
I liked rust already, but this is amazing!
ccostes··on Write Python inline in your Rust code
I'm in the process of porting some DSP code from python to rust and was really wishing I could use matplotlib to check my intermediate data. If this works like it looks like it should it would totally blow my mind!
ccostes··on I Sell Onions on the Internet
Do you like Vidalia onions?

More seriously, how much interaction do you have with the farmer(s)? Seems like there would need to be a lot of communication to make something like this work.

Super cool story!

ccostes··on GitLab’s CEO reflects on GitHub’s move to offer free private repos
> At the time, I was very disappointed to learn that BitBucket.org already offered the same. GitLab took off despite that and GitLab.com recently surpassed 10 million projects.

Is it just me, or does this sentence not make sense? I don't know why this is disappointing to him, or why he would just be learning this now.

ccostes··on Is Your Cat 6 Cable a Dog? (2013)
How long is "long" in this context? 5ft? 50ft?
ccostes··on Ask HN: How to shadow a CEO?
You sound like you have a pretty good understanding in this area. Are you in an executive position or work with that type a lot?
ccostes··on Boeing 737 Passenger Jet Damaged in Possible Midair Drone Hit
You can run so many more stories! (just need to make sure the prediction algorithm is good)
ccostes··on China harvested organs from political prisoners, says tribunal
Is it? In the context of people's organs they're both pretty abhorrent.
ccostes··on Real-Time Noise Suppression Using Deep Learning
Really impressive results, though I wish they had gone more into the deep learning part of it (but I guess that's probably the secret sauce).

Can't help but notice how well Nvidia is positioned for what appears to be a growing wave of demand for GPUs. Surprised this hasn't reflected in their share price (feels like they could be the next Intel, but what do it know).

ccostes··on How to Keep Your Job as Your Company Grows
It's a nice idea, but I don't see how you can objectively measure the risk or value of individuals like that. For example, if a company spends 5 years treading water/pivoting before it takes off, how do determine how much of future profits an employee who joined and left in year 1 should get?

I agree that the current system is far from ideal (just read through the Ask HN post asking early employees how much they made from their startup's exit).

ccostes··on Housing can’t both be a good investment and be affordable
Replacing housing with salary, it doesn't seem obvious that the answer is yes, though. Quick Google for wage vs inflation came up with this, which appears to show that real wages actually haven't increased when you account for inflation. Maybe I'm missing something, but your point doesn't feel quite as self-evident as you imply. http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/08/07/for-most-us-...
ccostes··on Apple's New Map
I wonder how many people missed the interesting conclusion of that article (that places, not map details, are the key when we get to augmented reality and self-driving) since it spent so much time analyzing the differences in the new map and speculating on how they did it. That stuff was cool too, but I think the author had a really good insight that most people are going to miss.
