cdancette··on Show HN: Deep Learning for Computer Vision course with colabs and Anki cards
Awesome idea to use anki for courses quiz !
cdancette··on The Centralized Internet Is Inevitable
Torrents seem to match your definition pretty well. And it's a quite successfull technology.
cdancette··on Ask HN: Favorite teachers on YouTube?
Not youtube, but I love Charles Isbell and Michael Littman's machine learning course on Udacity: https://in.udacity.com/course/machine-learning--ud262 They explain the topic in a very clear way, and are very funny
cdancette··on Tell HN: Using Gmail? You will be force logged into Chrome
That's not an option for everyone
cdancette··on Governments 'not on track' to cap temperatures at below 2 degrees: U.N
Gasoline
cdancette··on DuckDuckGo's bang
But you already can insert a bang at the end of the search string
cdancette··on JupyterCon: I don't like Notebooks [slides]
Yeah but it's less nice, and if you're running on a distant server you have to deal with X forwarding
cdancette··on JupyterCon: I don't like Notebooks [slides]
If you work with image processing, notebooks are very handy as they can display images directly. Also to display tables nicely with pandas, or for any data visualization actually.
cdancette··on Rockstar: A programming language where programs are also song lyrics
And '10 x'
cdancette··on Introducing the Python Language Server
Not parent but for me two main reasons would be : free, lighter / faster.
cdancette··on The state of type hints in Python
you can type hint without comments

    a: int = 1
is valid python
cdancette··on Optimization tricks in Python: lists and tuples
Why do you have the fixed length requirement?

Regular lists seem to work perfectly for this

cdancette··on We Shouldn’t Be Surprised at the Theranos Fraud
The difference is that Jobs wasn't putting people's life in danger as theranos did by releasing malfunctionning blood testing machines
cdancette··on Forget GDPR, EU's New Copyright Proposal Will Be a Disaster for the Internet
Self regulation, really?

Startups could never self regulate and never will. And a few bad startups can be enough to do massive damages.

Look Cambridge analytica: this startup alone made the case for regulations like GDPR.

As a user, I really am pleased with gdpr, so that "do-no-evil" startups stop selling my data around and not caring at all about my privacy.

cdancette··on Why I'm leaving Linux
I have a window sitting next to my Linux and I use it about twice a year, it's no maintenance at all (less than a VM I would say)
cdancette··on Why I'm leaving Linux
Then use a dual boot with Windows. It's quite simple to set up.

Linux is the best os for programming imo (especially if you develop software for Linux servers), so why not keep both?

cdancette··on Why Entrepreneurship Programs for Engineers Fail
I don't believe this. It just depends on the motivation of the entrepreneur. I know entrepreneurs who created non-profit startups and work to improve public services, what do you say about this?

If your motivation is only money, I'm not sure you can go as far as when you have a true goal. Look at Elon musk, I'm sure he could have made money much more easily if he would have continued into banking services like PayPal.

cdancette··on The Brotherhood of the Ad Blockers
I think we are slowly gaining consciousness about the danger of ads. It's really pernicious but I think has overall terrible effects on people (self estime, food / alcohol consumption...). And not just ads, but also product placement in movies / TV shows.

I think it's terrible for our health and our minds.

cdancette··on The Senate has forced a vote to restore net neutrality
"my freedom ends where yours begins"
cdancette··on The Senate has forced a vote to restore net neutrality
What I said doesn't imply this at all. I'm just stating that there's a trade-off between the freedom of corporations and the freedom of the people (but different kind of freedoms, ofc)
cdancette··on The Senate has forced a vote to restore net neutrality
So we can summarize saying it's customers freedom against ISP freedom.
cdancette··on Facebook now denying access unless EU users opt-in to tracking
I think we're underestimating the global health issue due to online advertisement (alcohol, smoking, or just bad eating habits). And I'm not speaking of attention disorder of so-called 'multitask kids' caused by social media that have business models based on ads, and do everything to grab your attention
cdancette··on Mara: A lightweight ETL framework, halfway between plain scripts and Airflow
python in airflow is just used to define your graph and trigger your jobs. I think it's a wonderful language to do this.

You can (and should) program your batch jobs in other languages than python if you have large amount of data of course.

cdancette··on International Obfuscated C Code Contest – 2018 Winning Entries
Can you explain a bit more how this works? I am not familiar at all with these challenges

50kB to 4kB is a 10x compression, it doesn't seem that huge, what's the achievement here?

cdancette··on Who Are These Economists, Anyway? (2009) [pdf]
Of course some people thought of this. That's explanained in the article
cdancette··on Ask HN: What are your favorite terminal programs?
ncdu to analyze disk space and find huge folders you can clean

And `z` (the zsh plugin) to cd into your most common directories

cdancette··on New autoplay policy in Chrome
that's why it's learning from your actions
cdancette··on Who Are These Economists, Anyway? (2009) [pdf]
what's not nonsense is to view humans as rational beings, and the free market as the perfect system.

What it says is that economists should include more psychology and less mathematics in their theories.

cdancette··on Please Stop Using Adblock (But Not Why You Think)
This was what I thought, in fact it's the exactly why I stopped using adblock.
