SpaceX has been using carbon fiber pressure tanks for awhile. Rocket Labs has been using them too.

I think that's completely disconnected from the word Democracy. Democracy is a form of government where political power is vested in the people of a state. As opposed to a Monopoly or Oligarchy. "More democratic" is not necessarily "more good". If 99% of people vote to arrest a specific person because they don't like what he said. That would be the most democratic system but it would be a terrible system.

I think the people making those "established measures" are just measuring what they think makes a good government and then calling that Democracy.

Isn't having elected representatives control government agencies more democratic?

By that logic "People with a different cultural background invaded France and displaced everyone already living there" Paris is a very young city.

Not everyone is a pacifist.

While europeans tend to celebrate engines/cars designed for the rich, Americans tend to celebrate engines/cars designed for everyone. Accounting for inflation, the car those engines came in (the 1969 Buick GS 400) sold for ~$30k in today's dollars. For comparison a similarly powerful 1969 Aston Martin DBS V8 sold for the equivalent of $126k today.

Their lander was destroyed shortly after landing and only sent a few images. If you wanted something that could last it would need to be designed to handle that atmosphere

Something like two thirds of the US federal budget is spent on some form of welfare. Assuming you want to keep that ratio you could spend more per person with fewer people withdrawing from that system.

These are not Ukranian war refugees. They can be sent back to their home countries

So they should turn off the GPS interference whenever they're asked to do so by ATC. Which they did in this case. The timeline is something like , NOTAM issued, flight takes off, flight has issues, ATC asked the military to turn off the interference, the military complies, the flight says they're good now and the interference can continue, ATC informes the military that they can continue, they do, and then the flight crashes. I don't see how the military carries any fault here.

" acknowledging that doing so changes the risk profile of aviation to some extent" Isn't that what the NOTAM is?

I'm not especially anti-LLM but emergency messages seems like a terrible use case. If you're typing out a detailed emergency message then I would think you would need all of your details to be sent or you could simply type a shorter message.

Thank you! That's exactly what I'm looking for.

I deal with those radio systems occasionally and I've always wanted to find or modify a digital watch to display the Julian date. It feels like that would be such a simple firmware change to something like a g-shock.

Julian date is sometimes used to synchronize timing for encrypted radio systems. My understanding is that early radio systems adapted it because it was used by astronomers. Astronomers used it because it didn't skip any days which would cause issues tracking long term astronomical cycles.

They all have to be manually cleared for release

What technology has been invented and abandoned due to moral reasons?

"where technology is used to distract, extract, surveil, and kill"

The first general purpose, programmable computer was designed in 1945 to calculate artillery firing tables for the US Army and was immediately used to help design nuclear weapons. Computers and all technology has always been, and will always be, used as a weapon (either directly or indirectly).

A modern John Deere tractor with a robust right-to-repair would still be a pain to do maintenance on. A big part of the reason people want old tractors is because they don't have these additional computer controlled systems which break and require time and effort to fix.

The grandfather who's house they were in.

There have always been lame people like this and for all of human history we have continued to explore and expand. I think at this point those people can safely be ignored.

Considering sociology and similar field's complete lack of correlation between data and conclusion, I don't believe they should be considered "science". They're more similar to astrology and phrenology.

I don't know about Bentley but Porsche makes hybrid electric drivetrains which would include lithium electric batteries

Unless someone was negligent in causing the fire that is likely the end of it.

What liberties are being given up by using a commercial washing machine?

If this was done two years ago HN would be talking about how great it is.

What changed between when shop class was common and now to cause those issues?

Yes, being opposed to discrimination is an ideological conformity test.

If I remember correctly, a lack of recognize able terrain features is what caused the drone's crash on mars

The drone on mars uses visual navigation based on known imagery of the terrain. I suspect that would be easier on this planet.
