cellshade··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
I also experienced performance issues when it came out on Steam, but that seems to be resolved now, and they've fixed a huge number of bugs related to things like squads, crossbows, etc. I'd give it another shot.

If you want to talk about in house autocomplete models, Supermaven has superior autocomplete, IMO.

This is pretty much the premise of the movie "Her".
cellshade··on Time is an illusion, Unix time doubly so
"Unix time numbers are repeated in the second immediately following a positive leap second. The Unix time number 1483142400 is thus ambiguous: it can refer either to start of the leap second (2016-12-31 23:59:60) or the end of it, one second later (2017-01-01 00:00:00)."

What platform are you on? I've experienced no major issues with the vscode vim plugin on Mac or Windows.

The escape key issue you mentioned was the only problem I've also had, but it's due to conflicting keybinds between the vim plugin and the vscode bindings for dismissing notifications and context help. I rebound all of those to shift-esc (and I believe the plugin's bindings now do this by default) and the problem went away.

It was an explicit compromise that was added in order to pass the original national background check legislation. A loophole is generally something unintended which this was not.

cellshade··on NASA's Curiosity Eyes Prominent Mineral Veins on Mars
Ownership of celestial bodies is covered by the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 which states that celestial bodies (such as Mars) are not subject to national appropriation and are the common heritage of all mankind.

Whether the treaty will mean anything in the future to come, however, is an open question, I guess.

cellshade··on A Life Apart: The Toll of Obesity
Such empathy.

Do you feel the same way about people with a substance abuse problem?

To get to that kind of weight, it's more than just being lazy and not tracking calories. It's a serious psychological or physical problem. It doesn't happen just by deciding not to skip dessert.

I've always been thin, but I can still empathize with someone in that predicament. Do you think that he didn't want to lose weight and get some control over his eating habits? Read the actual article. He in fact did gain control over things for a while, through a regimented routine, but the surgery put him off it, and he lost control again.

You're calling him a "whiny bitch", but this guy, who has a family that was obviously supportive and loved him, had a serious medical issue that ultimately resulted in his death.

Try imagining them as an actual human being and not some cartoon caricature.

cellshade··on Apple Looking To Slice Up Cable 99 Cents At A Time
It looks as though Apple TV is going to do what the Roku Player has been doing for well over a year now.

I got my Roku box for $99 (it's even cheaper now), and at the time it only did SD streaming from Netflix, but they have done several software updates since then, and it not only does HD from Netflix (and works beautifully), but it also streams from Amazon's VoD service, which is where I get most of my content when I can't get it through Netflix.

They've also added "channels" which allows any streaming video provider to hook into their API and stream to the Roku box, including the handling of paid subscriptions. Every day it seems like there's more. You can even get live baseball games and UFC fights.

I dropped my cable after the Roku. And to the above poster that said internet would barely be cheaper without TV, I have ATT U-verse, and it's $65 a month for internet-only 24mbps, but if you want an inexpensive option, I believe it goes all the way down to something like $25 a month.

I used to use torrents for some TV, but now that it's so easy to just stream stuff from Netflix, Amazon, etc, and watch it on my TV the same way I'd watch something on a Tivo, it's just not worth the hassle anymore.

The cable company's days are numbered here if they don't adapt to this new business model. I could never imagine paying $100+ a month for TV ever again.

cellshade··on Less Than 1 Year Until The Internet Runs Out of Addresses
I would think that in places without heavily established infrastructure, it would be much easier to deploy straight to IPv6.
