Precisely! Why not support the technologies that exist especially when it comes to helping drive critical mass of users to both? Making this a Lemmy instance would be mutually beneficial to both.

Is there a RSS feed? Why not make this a community in Lemmy?
cersei··on 'It's quite soul-destroying': how we fell out of love with dating apps
Wow, how dehumanizing for older people. You seem to take offense only to the fact that this person is 55 years old? I don't see anyone calling it "rape" when the rest of the population is engaging in drunken sex at nightclubs.
cersei··on LazyVim
I don't disagree, it's always a balance of "how much time do I actually want to spend on my workflow vs getting the work done", but I think the only reasonable way to use Vim is to build your environment over time (many years) and have it in source control so that you never have to do it again. You'll still have to keep making updates of course, but that's typically a bit smaller time commitment.

They probably NEED to show the investors that Reddit can make money. So it might be a win or bust moment for them.

Ah right, "but think of the children"
cersei··on OpenAI used Kenyan workers on less than $2 per hour to make ChatGPT less toxic
Sounds like the cost of this job is $2/hr? Why justify the highest possible cost as the fair standard?
cersei··on Xbrowsersync – open-source Bookmark Synching
I've been using this and it's been working great. I don't use folders anymore since this supports tags which are better. The data is easy to backup although I haven't done it very often. I've been using the hosted endpoint, but want to setup my own when I have time.
cersei··on ‘Two years of lost immigration’ is responsible for half of missing workforce
I don't think people want to come into the US anymore. The country has been in a serious decline since Bush Jr, and it's not going to be changed by a one or two terms of a democratic presidency. Even developing countries don't have the same issues with abortion rights, etc...
cersei··on You need to earn over $200k to afford a typical home in these 8 U.S. cities
How is it a housing "shortage" if there is no population growth? (The population has declined due to the pandemic).

I think it's obvious that it's not a shortage driving these prices.

cersei··on Today’s inflation is not a repeat of the 1970s
1. I suspect that the 1% who owns 98% of the wealth parks their money into things like land and real-estate, which is causing an artificial shortage and price hikes.
cersei··on U.S. workers have gotten less productive – no one is sure why
Probably the long-term effects of COVID which causes exhaustion, brain fog, depression, etc... Combined perhaps by people having had time to reset and reflect on their life. Combined by the fact that the planet and democracy are dying.

These are theories of course, but I don't think one has to always look for very complex or technology related answers.

cersei··on Vim After 15 Years (2017)
I've grown tired of big proprietary software, even if it's open source. Companies like Microsoft will keep doing whatever their business whims dictate, deprecating tools, etc... I want to live in a world where I'm in control of my software instead of constantly adapting for reasons that have nothing to do with how I like to work.

I also don't like the common paradigms like having a cockpit of information in my face at all times. I want the information that I need magnified and the ability to dig into it with intentionality in whichever way I choose.

When working with text, I want text in the forefront, not widgets and GUIs. Those are some philosophical, but also pragmatic reasons for prefering the shell based tools and Vim. If there is a visualization that is better conveyed graphically then yes, I can of course open tools for that purpose.

Luckily I'm able to use Vim for my workflow, but I totally get that it's not always possible or feasible.

"This sounds like a typical US thing. Suffering from a solveable problem, while creating the maximum public drama and having the society incapable of reform as a sort of greek-tragedy-background chorus humming nimby."

Love this summation of the US

cersei··on Evidence that life flashes before the eyes upon death
This is more metaphysical than scientific (but could have a multidimensional scientific basis)... I had a near death (or perhaps actual death) experience as a child where my life flashed by, however it was ever so slightly different from the life I knew (in a butterfly effect kind of way), which then prevented me from dying. It felt as if history had changed or my consciousness joined a parallel timeline where I was still alive. What made me think this way is that I seemed to have retained memories from the original past and not the current one, them being mostly similar events, but in slight differences in timing & order (which ended up making a big difference for me). I of course always tried to assess if this was some form of psychosis or error (assuming that to be the case), but I seemed to know a variation of real events that had not been shared with me (due to the timing differences, e.g. something happening before my birth rather than after it).

Anyway, as a fun thought experiment... If your near death experience was indeed history rewriting itself ever so slightly, and even if you retained memories from it, would you be able to tell? You can't be fully certain that all of the people share exactly the same history the way you remember it (and you'd be likely to dismiss yours as an erroneous memory.)

cersei··on Psychedelic frees up depressed brain, study shows
"Of course people with serious depression already have major brain dysfunction and likely vulnerable to exacerbated adverse effects. Compared to normal functioning there's sharply decreased room for error."

Is there actual evidence showing that depressed individuals are more likely to suffer adverse effects?

cersei··on Online subscriptions to The Economist cost twice as much in NZ as the US. Why?
I've noticed similar with different magazines. I wanted to subscribe to a popular magazine (can't remember which one it was), and it would've been significantly cheaper to order a digital subscription AND a monthly paper copy i the US, than a mere digital subscription in Europe. How is a digital delivery more expensive than a paper copy? Obviously there's some type of price gouging going on here. Needless to say, I didn't take the subscription as it felt blatantly unfair.
