cgtyoder··on Scrollbars are becoming a problem
Is there a way to increase the size of the Safari scrollbar?
cgtyoder··on HP disables customers’ printers if they use ink cartridges from cheaper rivals
How is this news? HP has been doing this for a long time.
cgtyoder··on Ask HN: Advice that changed your life?
Big one right here ^^^
cgtyoder··on Monster builds 'cursed' USB-C port that works differently if you flip the cable
The title string was slightly too long for HN limits so I had to truncate somewhere :^)
cgtyoder··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
This is exactly why individuals should not be allowed to have tens (let alone hundreds!) of billions of dollars in wealth - they become all-powerful and too easily subvert the will of the people. They become their own ruling class, which is unacceptable in a functioning democracy.
cgtyoder··on Exit interviews are a trap
Boy, that really sucks - sorry you were abused & gaslighted like that. Glad things are better now!
cgtyoder··on I got pwned by my cloud costs
It's unconscionable that MS doesn't have warning notifications in place BY DEFAULT, so when you start incurring charges e.g. 10x of normal, you get notified immediately. One shouldn't have to set these up manually ever.
cgtyoder··on TIL the assumption that string length does not change when upper-cased is false
It's a bug. There is a capital eszett now, as of 2017. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9F
cgtyoder··on Why can an ad break the Windows 11 desktop and taskbar?
Get this guy a couch - someone has a case of the vapours. PRERELEASED SOFTWARE HAS A BUG IN IT OMG! Yes, there are still going to be problems. No, it's not the end of the world and there's still time to fix it. This is a tempest in a teapot and utterly not worth the screen space on HN.
cgtyoder··on The art of not taking things personally
I have definitely seen that happen before. It's good that you are at least noticing it! If you want to move out of that mindset, talking to a counselor of some sort is probably going to be useful. Change is hard, but it can happen. Good luck.
cgtyoder··on Audacity's team is censoring legitimate questions
Executive Summary: 3.0.2 is "safe"; further versions TBD.
cgtyoder··on MVT – forensic tool to look for infections on smartphones
Has anyone found a (the) good "Indicators" (IoC) file to compare against? I have a number of large JSON files as the output of the tool, but it's way too much to sort through manually.
cgtyoder··on Audacity may collect “Data necessary for law enforcement, litigation” and more
Thanks for doing this. Any chance of providing pre-built binaries for those who don't have the tools handy/aren't that skilled in building?
cgtyoder··on Amazon refused to refund $7k after shipping an empty box instead of a Sony A1
Seems like a good thing to do for high-value items is video record any unboxing. That will certainly go a long way in helping to prove the correct contents were in the box when first opened. I will be doing that from now on.
cgtyoder··on Visual Studio 2022
You were quoted in a VS Magazine article! https://visualstudiomagazine.com/articles/2021/04/19/vs-2022...
cgtyoder··on How to Criticize Computer Scientists (2001)
> Yet another thing I discovered is that for engineers one of the most important words they use in discussions is "no"...

This paragraph is a great insight - knowing how someone else is going to receive your (as you perceive it) constructive criticism cuts down miles to the destination of achieving the common goal. Speaking so your listeners will be able to "hear" you without perceiving an attack is critical in cross-discipline groups.

cgtyoder··on String length functions for single emoji characters evaluate to greater than 1
If you reverse a filename string, you'd be sorting by a reversed extension. Most mature programming language infrastructures have a FilenameExtension() function or similar which in this case would be the best to use.
cgtyoder··on Is This a Branch?
Love the passion here on HN! :)
cgtyoder··on Slack is down
As the saying goes, Everyone has a Test environment. Some people are lucky enough to have that distinct from Production.
cgtyoder··on Ask HN: Why aren't one-time sign in links more popular for authentication?
lol "try reaching out to google" that was my good laugh for the day.
cgtyoder··on DNS hijacked on GoDaddy?
Potentially getting their DNS redirected would cost even more. (Also there are no "transfer fees" - although maybe GD unscrupulously does that?) So it's only a time consideration.
cgtyoder··on DNS hijacked on GoDaddy?
I have been using joker.com for ~20 years for several dozen domains, and have never had a problem. Based in Germany, works very well.
cgtyoder··on Linus Torvalds wants Apple’s new M1-powered Macs to run Linux
Author takeaway: You're not going to get any help for this from Apple.
cgtyoder··on Reasons to prefer Linux over Windows (2014)
I had to LOL a tiny bit when I opened up the webpage and found the actual name of the article is Objective reasons to prefer Linux to Windows. I wonder why that word got left out of the HN title submission... :^)
cgtyoder··on Scientist David Sinclair on why we age and why he thinks we don’t have to (2019)
Doesn't prove anything. Could have great genetics, makeup, hair coloring, plastic surgery, etc.
cgtyoder··on The Nobel Peace Prize 2020
Yasser Arafat - still the only person to hijack a plane and win the Nobel Peace Prize.
cgtyoder··on Chuck Feeney Is Now Officially Broke
Note how all the other mega-wealthy individuals praise him for his actions, but commit to nothing.
cgtyoder··on Mozilla will reportedly launch a paid version of Firefox this fall
Let's hope it includes blocking auto-play videos from TheNextWeb.
cgtyoder··on Ask HN: StackExchange down for anyone on Firefox specifically?
stackoverflow dot com now back up!
cgtyoder··on Ask HN: StackExchange down for anyone on Firefox specifically?
