chaps··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
Definitely some weirdness going on in this whole thread in general. It went from front page to 5th page in an instant.
chaps··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
It takes balls to be a whistleblower. I'm not holding my breath that it'll happen.
chaps··on Feds suspect ransom negotiator ran ShinyHunters extortion site
"I think kids are seeing videos of people throwing these and, of course, only the successful videos make it to their feeds."

What makes you think this? This is such a fucking absurd thing to say.

chaps··on Oregon Police Are Charging a Local News Outlet $2.5M for Records About One Cop
Fun fact: when a record is created by a government agency, it's done with the expectation that it's going to be FOIA'd. The failure of the agency to maintain records in a way that allows the public to FOIA for their documents is an inexcusable failure by the police agency.

Also, there are many ways to simplify review and redaction processes such that it doesn't cost millions of dollars.

So you're just that much of a badass?
chaps··on Feds suspect ransom negotiator ran ShinyHunters extortion site
This conversation isn't about tear gas grenades.
chaps··on Feds suspect ransom negotiator ran ShinyHunters extortion site
When I was 14 I used to think I could shoot a kamehameha if I tried hard enough. Even then I would have made fun of people thinking they'd know what to do when a fucking grenade was thrown at them.
chaps··on Feds suspect ransom negotiator ran ShinyHunters extortion site
I think you, also, are misunderstanding why their comment is such a ridiculous thing to say.
chaps··on Feds suspect ransom negotiator ran ShinyHunters extortion site
For the life of me I can't get their comment out of my head. It's just so ridiculous that I can't figure out what their point even is.
chaps··on Feds suspect ransom negotiator ran ShinyHunters extortion site
Yes, teenagers tend to be pretty stupid but... do you think if a grenade was thrown at you that you'd react rationally?

chaps··on The Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” is deceiving
I hope you watch the movie and can eventually look back on this comment.
chaps··on The Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” is deceiving
SPOILERs kinda: Notably, it's all in the presentation and form of everything that went on. There were about ten different moments in the packed theater where something was said or happened where the entire audience was... silent. tense. I've never felt that sort of palpable and shared tension anywhere in my life like that.
chaps··on The Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” is deceiving
I think I would have had this position prior to seeing the movie. After seeing it last night, I'm 100% inclined to do everything in my power to not spoil the experience. It's truly, truly that wild.

I have no skin in this game, but: friend, are you okay? You're acting like an incredibly weird jerk.

chaps··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
"in-part because of ads" seems more reasonable, tbh.

When I worked at an adtech company almost ten years ago, this sort of shit was the exact concern of me and my colleagues. We've had time to do better but guess we're just fucked.

chaps··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
So you're saying we're all fucked and there's nothing we can do?
chaps··on An Apology
You expect way too much of journalists. Mostly rightfully so, but -- it's not really possible for journalists to publish everything they know. Going through the editing, investigation, cuts... it's just not tenable.
chaps··on Passkeys are not a trap
If I was posting in a thread about an article responding to that article, then yeah -- I'd read it. But we're not.
chaps··on Passkeys are not a trap
Why didn't you bother to read it but still think they have no sense?
chaps··on Total Annihilation, rebuilt for modern computers
ZK. Maybe it's better these days.
chaps··on Total Annihilation, rebuilt for modern computers
It's really unfortunate that it's as good as it is because awful players (racists, cheaters, tactical pausers) really ruined the community.
chaps··on The Corporate Happiness Treadmill and the Case for Doing Less
There is such a thing as meaningful work. Just, you need to leave the corporate world and accept an 80% paycut.
chaps··on The Corporate Happiness Treadmill and the Case for Doing Less
...and people like you are exactly the reason why I left the industry. Holy fuck man, it's okay to be something other than a worker bee.
chaps··on The Corporate Happiness Treadmill and the Case for Doing Less
Sure, if you consider "work" to be the end-all-be-all. I "phoned it in at work" for a while and it was one of the best things I did for myself. But the reason was mostly that my evenings were spent working on learning data analysis and working on bunches of civics-oriented projects and FOIA litigation. I did eventually leave to find more meaningful work in a different career. But "phoning it in" is what enabled me to eventually leave.
chaps··on Yes, and

risks you take when you commit a crime worthy of jail.
A friend's mom went to jail for having too many dildos in her purse. Do you count her in this?
chaps··on Yes, and
I think you have a significantly narrower view than them. Consider someone moving to a new city or someone getting out of jail. It takes time to do the networking you're talking about. People need to eat and networking doesn't fill your stomach.
