chasd00··on How I use AI (Oct 2026)
> The struggle was never to learn programming syntax

For 85-90% of devs, yes this was the struggle. Creating and updating rows in a database from user input is all the “domain modeling” there is in most software. That’s what is solved by AI and it’s the majority of software dev.

I like those little tidbits for kids like “don’t be like this kid (showing a bad habit), instead be like this kid (showing a good habit)”. It may not be 100% PC but it’s easy to remember. Hah The Simpsons parodied those in a scene showing a booklet titled “Don’t do what Donny-Don’t does”.

This is beginning to get a little unsettling.
chasd00··on Supermarket freezers across Europe hit by second suspected cyber-attack
Just keep them read-only, if a freezer need to be defrosted send an SMS to the store manager with the message “go hit the defrost button”.
chasd00··on Supermarket freezers across Europe hit by second suspected cyber-attack
My guess is setting up a port forward in the gateway router is part of the freezer install process. The customer probably had to give the tech the router credentials and the tech sets up the forward themselves.

The point is the code is there in front of you. You can audit it, study it, turn mod and after model loose on it, do whatever you want. You’re going to have to compile it so you need to trust the compiler but at least it’s not some cloud provider.
chasd00··on Lenovo's 'encrypted' fingerprint USB is just an unencrypted SD card in a case
You can probably implement your own these days. I would use a model to generate a requirement document, then human review, then generate an implementation plan, then human review, then take it to build. Have a different model to a code review and testing. End with human code review and testing.

You could make your own BitLocker conforming to your requirements without relying on or trusting any cloud or corporate entity.

chasd00··on Product Managers aren't safe either
To me the ones doing scheduling, team coordination and chasing people down for answers to promises made are probably the safest. The more you deal with humans in meatspace the safer from AI you are.
chasd00··on Building an AI-native engineering org
haha i want to file a critical sev1 "my bank account no longer has a billion dollars in it. please fix asap"
chasd00··on Building an AI-native engineering org
since when does an engineering org care about revenue or customer satisfaction? Most software devs have no idea how the business they work for operates and think their direct deposit every two weeks is a fundamental law of nature. Also, many software devs are anti-customer and think customers are wrong even when the customer is talking to them one-on-one describing their needs in plain english.

chasd00··on Medicare Will Pay $50k for Your Heart Attack. It Should Pay $100 to Prevent It
16 oz can of white monster (stereotypical energy drink) has about 150mg of caffeine. A grande (16 oz) black coffee from Starbucks has about 310mg of caffeine. You would need to drink 2 16 oz monsters to get the same amount of caffeine as a single grande cup of coffee from Starbucks.

If you're just looking at caffeine intake you'd be better off switching from coffee to energy drinks. You could drink about 3 per day and be close to the 400mg/day guidance.

edit: white monster has no sugar in case anyone was about to bring that up

chasd00··on Backdoor in Claude Code for VS Code extension on the Cursor Marketplace
I wouldn't hold regular engineers in such high regard. I know plenty of EEs, MEs and CEs that don't really give a f** about anything except a paycheck same as software developers.
chasd00··on US Reps Lead Democratic Resolution Opposing A.I. Bubble Bailout for Big Tech
> How exactly are House Democrats supposed to revoke the Exchange Stabilization Fund or change the Defense Production Act when they don't have a majority in the House?

They're going to have a majority in about 3 days. They won't have a veto proof majority but they will have a majority.

chasd00··on Intel plunges 25%, triggers global chip rout on bleak outlook
IMO all bets are off and nothing is going to make sense until after the elections and we know whether bombing returns to Iran or not. I wouldn’t make any moves until December, you may get lucky getting in/out of some positions but you most likely will not.

As for a cause, I read an article this morning about some kind of capex miss for Google, MSoft, Amazon and some AI revenue miss at ServiceNow and the analyst has declared the bubble pop underway. _Don’t read too much into that though_, analysts makes this claim and the inverse every single week.

chasd00··on US Reps Lead Democratic Resolution Opposing A.I. Bubble Bailout for Big Tech
Not sure why you're downvoted because you're right. If there wasn't a major election next week this would not even be happening. It's meaningless theatre to get the public cheering or jeering on their way to the polls.

In the 2008/2009 crisis the bailouts were approved by a red admin (Bush) and then the check signed, delivered hat in hand, by a blue admin (Obama). If they want a bailout they will get a bailout no matter which party is in charge.

chasd00··on ‘You Are Done’: The letter sent to King by the F.B.I (2014)
The very funny “presidents discuss anime” video opened my eyes and that was like 3 years ago. Audio is going to have to require some kind of proof of authenticity going forward.
chasd00··on ‘You Are Done’: The letter sent to King by the F.B.I (2014)
The very foundation of Democracy is at stake!! …again for like 30 years straight now.

My step dad use to quote bible verses to me trying to prove Obama was the literal antichrist. Before that it was the evil Bush and his oil cronies. Now it’s Trump, in two years it will be someone else. Same as it ever was.

chasd00··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
But I don't bring up the second amendment when complaining about income taxes either. Again, what part of what ICE is doing infringes on the second ammendment?
chasd00··on Start Doing Graph Theory
> wanted to know the name of a Pokémon from his licensed shirt.

how did you even ask an AI this question? Took a picture of the shirt, uploaded it, and asked the AI what it was? That's a different class of problem than "answer this graph theory question and include your references: <paste text here>"

chasd00··on Start Doing Graph Theory
IMO if i can learn from/enjoy the content then it makes no difference who/what wrote it. I'll even pay for it if I feel the content is equal in value to the price.
chasd00··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
Agreed. I'm pro-second amendment, what is the there to comment on here about guns? seriously asking.

chasd00··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
I think the would absolutely love you as a competitor.
chasd00··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
the cost of developing software has never been lower. That is maybe 10-15% of the value in a software business believe it or not. If you can do the other 85% it's a great time to start a software business.
chasd00··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
I never really understood that and i think it goes back to factory jobs where time was directly tied to widgets produced which was directly tied to sales. If i had a company and the bank account was increasing at an acceptable rate and my customers were happy with my product/service then i wouldn't care how many hours employees put in. As long as customer satisfaction is high and bank account balance keeps going up then what else matters from a business perspective?
chasd00··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
it's this way in the US too, if people would read the actual contract for a typical office white collar job 40hrs/week is in there along with whether or not you get paid overtime. Most IT workers do not get paid overtime but some do. In some US jobs paid overtime is required by law and in others it is not. Also, different US states have different labor laws too so there's multiple governments and laws involved plus the whatever the employee and company have negotiated between themselves. I can't think of a single labor law that applies to every single working person in the US no matter what they're paid for. [edit: except taxes]
