cheesetable··on Definitive Account of the CIA/Media/BigTech Fraud
I have no interest in US politics, but I do have an interest in avoiding censorship/bias for topics that I do care about.

The recent events that Glenn Greenwald has reported on has accelerated my move off platforms that have censored, or that can censor.

I won't be able to avoid all of them all of the time, but I can make the alternatives my default.

Federated over centralised. Open over closed. Public domain over ToS.

Headlines often aren't meant to be read literally.

It's just a teaser to read the article.

cheesetable··on MIT study finds Tesla drivers become inattentive when Autopilot is activated
Governments are responsible for setting safety standards, and enforcing that they do.
cheesetable··on What is this Gemini thing, and why am I excited about it? (2020)
That's a fair critique.

I expect the designers foresaw this.

I don't think wide popularity was a goal.

HTTP supports extensibility via HTTP headers and methods.

Gemini to not be evolved:

* HTTP is now for interactivity, complex clients, WebGL, Webassembly, ...

* Gemini is for a segregated simpler web: links and text.

cheesetable··on Headscale: Open-source implementation of the Tailscale control server
To clarify, I don't use Headscale either.

Both look like great products, I just don't need what they're offering enough to accept their downsides.

cheesetable··on Headscale: Open-source implementation of the Tailscale control server
Not sure what I think about this.

I don't use Tailscale because I don't trust their key distribution, and this open source project would solve that, but it might undermine Tailscale's sustainability.

This would be a shame because Tailscale is working well with the open source community: open source clients, working well with distros, working well with Linux DNS stack, supporting a more P2P secure Internet, and documenting their well through it.

cheesetable··on Gnome to prevent theming, wider community not happy
I've been using GNOME 40 for the past few months, and I'm impressed with the level of quality: intuitiveness, polish, features.

This software works well on my Pinephone too.

I'm happy to trade my flexibility to allow the GNOME the flexibility to make improvements that benefit all.

I understand some want more flexibility, however.

cheesetable··on Ask HN: How do we get Google and Twitter to use href attributes again?
Use nitter, a plain Twitter frontend.

Pick a close instance from https://github.com/zedeus/nitter/wiki/Instances

I have installed https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nitter-redire...

cheesetable··on A Twitter user insulted a German politician, then police raided his house
Note that different people have different criteria for a coup.

For example, in the US in Jan 2021, there was a riot that some call a coup, and some do not.

Brazil might also count. I am not aware of the details.

cheesetable··on Australia’s new mass surveillance mandate
The comment I replied to was asking for a citation on ACLU expousing authoritarian causes, which I did.

I fail to see how a US Supreme Court ruling is relevant to this.

Please keep discussion polite.

GP did not mention vaccines.

Different people are impacted by lockdown in different ways. Consider those that might have different experiences to yours.

cheesetable··on Can progressives be convinced that genetics matters?
I think it's for fear of appeal to genetics, which has historically been used to justify violations of human rights.
