cherioo··on Apple reports fourth quarter results
But those few extra grands of revenue at the cost of millions in design and inventory to support that product

Not to mention, at the price apple is selling their 27 inch display, i am doubtful anyone buying them want to make do with the base M chip. But if not the base chip, that will add even more inventory cost

cherioo··on mitmproxy adds --emudhra option
I thought this cert only recently gets trusted, so only newish but not too new devices would be vulnerable. Am i misunderstanding how this works?
cherioo··on New Apple TV 4K
$299, up from $129 of the last gen. I am not sure how many people would still buy this?
cherioo··on One month coding with GLM 5.3 Flash
How do you know sol is more efficient?
cherioo··on Thelio Mira AI Linux Workstation: 192 GB GPU Memory
This makes Mac Studio with 256GB memory look cheap in comparison. More memory to store weight at a quarter of the price!
cherioo··on Launching Route 53 Files
> If the same record is changed in the file system and in Route 53 at the same time, we aim for last-write-wins. This is not strictly possible, since Route 53 does not expose modification timestamps on records

Except route 53 provides a fully ACID transactional API you can build your own locks with!

cherioo··on OpenAI Jalapeño: Better than Nvidia Blackwell
Thinking generates a ton of tokens. These baked in chips tend to not have a lot of memory for context. I am not sure taalas supports Thinking at all.

The more problem like these they solve the more they will look like GPU.

cherioo··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
Geekerwan's review is up, with caveat that this is the prototype board, not even packaged into a phone yet, but still shows some amazing results in spec 2026, 3dmark (gpu), perf-per-watt for single core and multi-core https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCCJuOopLK8 (you can turn on YouTube auto-dub)
cherioo··on FCC moves to ban Lidar-equipped foreign drones from US
I am sure if the US gov asks DJI to do those things they will be happy to comply. They are just here to make money.
cherioo··on New cars are getting 1.2cm longer and 0.5cm taller each year
I hate this because my parking space, both at the company and at home, are not getting any wider or taller. I chose to purchase my EV6 over the Equinox EV, despite the Equinox being significantly cheaper, mainly because latter was too big (and also worse driving experience).
cherioo··on Are AI Labs Pelicanmaxxing?
I don’t quite agree. Good human artist can visualize in their mind how to draw a picture, i think. Which i think is no different than LLM doing SVG drawing in their “head”. Anthropic’s recent post call this head-space “workspace”.

It just might feel foreign to human who does not have a SVG trained head-space.

cherioo··on Kimi K3, and what we can still learn from the pelican benchmark
I imagine all vision models have to do this, this being html rendering, to be able to do well in web design.
cherioo··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
Why not? Look at the silicon valley AI researcher salary. There’s no way Chinese researchers make close to the same amount.
cherioo··on South Korea to spend $1T on more memory chip production and humanoid robots
It’s CXMT (memory) not SMIC (logic)
cherioo··on PgDog is funded and coming to a database near you
Except that dynamo is still just glorified mysql? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18871661

I don’t think the backend matters. It’s the frontend wrapper that makes or breaks HA.

cherioo··on Stripe is friendly to “friendly fraud”
It’s 2026, why can’t credit card and merchant figure out a way to transmit order summary URL as part of credit card transactions so I don’t need to match up transactions by amount??
cherioo··on The memory shortage is causing a repricing of consumer electronics
Maybe author is writing this from an Intel Mac!
cherioo··on SpaceX S-1
It’s also interesting that Cursor (that spacex is acquiring ) also just announced yesterday they are training in colossus.

So who’s using it? Is spacex just renting out parts of their data center? Or is cursor done done?

cherioo··on Incident Report: Railway Blocked by Google Cloud [resolved]
They better do. What is google doing?
cherioo··on Arena AI Model ELO History
The interesting thing I find is how Anthropic has been more consistently improving over time in the last few years, that allows it to catchup and surpass OpenAI and Google. The latter two have pretty much plateau over the last year or so. GPT 5.5 is somehow not moving the needle at all.

I hope to see the other labs can bring back competition soon!

cherioo··on Restore full BambuNetwork support for Bambu Lab printers
Does it not depend on what the feature is?

Is it theft if a company stops supporting TLS 1.0 clients that were previously supported?

What about upgrading service to only support a new form of authentication, breaking some clients?

What if the new authentication can only be done by locked down official client?

What if the company never advertised support through third party clients?

cherioo··on Bambu Lab is abusing the open source social contract
Before: user can print via cloud or locally with custom slicer at the same time easier.

Some time in 2025: firmware updates make user choose between cloud XOR locally. Enabling local mode allows using custom slicer, but disables cloud printing or monitoring. Folks were up in arms because they wanted both, and openness.

Latest fork: a specific new custom slicer impersonates UA to submit print via bambu cloud, so it gives the pre-2025 experience.

Bambu sues this new fork. Actual OrcaSlicer working locally is fine.

cherioo··on AWS North Virginia data center outage – recovery to take hours
Is it really failing more, or we just don’t hear about failure happening elsewhere?

Last i heard azure outage it wasn’t even on HN frontpage

cherioo··on Canada's first sovereign wealth fund
That seems fine as long as they can show lower volatility than market while still being close in return?

Did they?

cherioo··on Turn your best AI prompts into one-click tools in Chrome
LLM are a text prediction engine. Starting the prompt with “you are a helpful assistant” help make subsequent text prediction more in line of that of a helpful assistant.
cherioo··on Nvim-treesitter (13K+ Stars) is Archived
It’s like the law of big numbers. Once a project grows large enough, some entitled free-riders are bound to pop up.

What to do as maintainer? Can everyone of them find piece?

cherioo··on DRAM pricing is killing the hobbyist SBC market
Having a SSD certainly is better than no SSD.
cherioo··on Dario Amodei calls OpenAI’s messaging around military deal ‘straight up lies’
We don’t know if Palantir is using claude for those uses. Though anthropic would not know for sure either.

I do agree with your point that Amodei is playing a game though. Whether he’s winning the bigger picture or not it’s unclear. His red lines are already so watered out, like how domestic surveillance is not ok, but international? totally fine.

cherioo··on OpenClaw is dangerous
It’s like money laundering, but now responsibility laundering.

Anthropic released Claude saying “hey be careful. But now that enables the masses to build OpenClaw and go “hold my bear”. Now the masses people using OpenClaw had no idea what responsibility they should hold.

I think eventually we will have laws like “you are responsible for your AI’s work”. Much like how driver is (often) responsible for car crashes, not the car companies.

cherioo··on The TV industry concedes that the future may not be in 8K
Yes larger format TV is getting more affordable, but I don’t think larger living room is catching up. Watching tv in general also feels like a dying trend. I would not be bullish on larger tv getting popular outside niche enthusiasts market (with money to buy a mansion)
