chesspro··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2020)
We’re looking for senior software engineers (iOS & backend) to help rebuild the entire signup and login experience here at Uber.

In the past, each product team built their own signup and login experience. While this led to fast execution, it became harder over time to launch new growth and security features across all product lines (Uber has dozens of mobile and web apps!).

Opportunities:

- High business impact: This is a mission critical team. You’ll directly be driving user growth. Signup and login is one of the most visited user experiences here at Uber.

- Ownership: Lots of unsolved technical problems (eg: single sign on, smart lock, biometrics). As part of this effort, we’re building a reusable identity library to handle our future identity needs. Help us build this from the ground up.

- Large scale: Lots of interesting scalability challenges on both the backend and web. We care a lot about performance since Uber operates in many regions where customers have underpowered devices and weak internet.

chesspro··on Creating slick intro videos for startups
I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but they've made some great promo videos for some YC companies.

chesspro··on How to get Spotify in North America
For those of you that have a VPS in Europe, you can also do this via ssh tunneling. (see lowendbox.com for European servers, all around or under $5/month)

I have a server in London which serves as a dev box & proxy/ssh tunneling.

If you need help setting up ssh tunnels, I made a quick guide here http://public.dwang.org/ssh. Of course, for the guides I made swap the given server name and usernames with yours.

chesspro··on Startups Open Sourced: Stories to inspire and educate
Great content. I really enjoyed the interview with Dave Paola, the founder of djangy.com & thathigh.com. I saw his AMA on reddit a while back (http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/ev2zb/i_run_thathighco...) and was curious about his story. I've read Founders at Work and while it's a good read, I've been looking for interviews with more recent startups, which is exactly what this book/pdf provides. Thanks.
chesspro··on Introducing Prompt. Nice SSH for iOS.
I haven't tried out many other ssh clients, but I just bought prompt. I'm really digging the little bar above the keyboard that adds the most commonly used keys like esc, ctrl, tab, @, arrow keys. It makes my server admin jobs a lot easier.
chesspro··on Whartonite Seeks Code Monkey
These postings are real. I can confirm that I've seen some of these emails in person from Penn.
chesspro··on Ugly Software (like Blackboard) Gives Education a Bad Name
Also we have to keep in mind sometimes incompetent IT people are in charge. We had a grad who came back and designed a software for the entire school (potentially district) to use.

Although it's in place, it's been severely restricted due to irrational concerns over security and other illogical arguments. In order for the buying to even occur (keep in mind this was free for the school), there must be knowledgeable IT people in charge.

This is a much smaller scale here since it was for a high school instead of a college, but you'd be surprised at how incompetent people can be.

Right now in the IT people I work under at the university are smart, but lightyears behind when it comes to good user interfaces and the latest technologies.

chesspro··on Google Voice for iPhone Released
GV Mobile+ has a lot of extra features, but I feel like the native Google Voice app is faster and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. There were also always glitches with the GV Mobile+ app I used, e.g. text disappearing or hiding behind a whole line of whitespace.
chesspro··on Going Too Fast
Going fast is perfectly fine. Just make sure you slow down to think it through every now and then.

I know people who are trying to get multiple degrees within four years of undergrad and are taking 7-8 credits when most are only taking 5. I admire them for the hard work they put in, but I feel like some of them are clueless as to why they are doing it, except the fact that they want to just do really well and look good.

I remember in high school I used to do the same. Now I keep on asking myself the same question over and over again. Is this really want I want to do? Things have changed drastically as well for me. Much slower, but more efficiently. Although, I really wish I had more time for my side projects.

And I totally agree - trusting your gut is probably the most important thing you can do. Just be sure to keep it in check from time to time.

chesspro··on Dropbox CEO: Why search advertising failed us
Similar story -

Kevin, one of the founders of Wufoo, does a great job of explaining how he grew the product by word of mouth. He built it from the trust of his users, most of which was from http://particletree.com/. It's fascinating how much emphasis he puts on interacting personally with the paid users and how they scaled that. Definitely a lot of hard work, but it paid off when they had some server trouble when Wufoo first launched - their old users trusted them and backed them up when some of the initial comments were negative.

Long story short, he didn't do any search advertising either.

Interview here: http://mixergy.com/wufoo-kevin-hale/

chesspro··on Watch – A Useful Linux Command You May Have Never Heard Of
Hm, is there a similar command for this on the mac (that is installed by default)?

I looked around and this is all I could find: http://www.sveinbjorn.org/watch_macosx

I have a bunch of while loops written in bash, but would prefer something cleaner.

chesspro··on Change your color temperature to fix your sleep patterns
Yup, very handy. I have this installed. I still wish there was some custom fine-grained controls that the user can set for their own preferences (based on brightness of their surroundings). I would definitely pay for some app that does this.

chesspro··on Change your color temperature to fix your sleep patterns
Hm, is there something like this for the iPhone?

That would be pretty cool. I find it pretty annoying to adjust the brightness constantly on my iPhone.

chesspro··on Ninite.com (YC W08) Turns One: Lots of stats plus an AMA
Thanks for the service! You don't know how many countless hours this service has saved me...I think in the past year I've used this over 20 times for all the computers I've had to reformat for a IT job.
chesspro··on The Mac App Store, it'a awesome, and you guys are missing why.
It all depends on how apple carries it out with their Mac App Store.

If they manage to do it in a way similar to steam, they'll be tremendously successful. The only problem is that a lot of people don't view games the same way as apps. I have friends who don't torrent games like MW2 & indie games but they end up pirating office for mac. In fact, I would say over 50-60% of my friends have torrented copies of office. Then again, my friends probably aren't representative of most people. While the majority of people don't bother pirating apps on the iOS, I wonder how much this will change with bigger and more expensive apps on the Mac App Store, like with mac office.

One convenience with something like the App Store is that as long as you sign in, you have access to your apps on your machines. More importantly, it's available online digitally so you can redownload it anytime you want without the worry of losing your dmgs. That alone is a major plus for me and probably will get me to buy more software than I usually do.

And DRM systems are always going to be broken and again, the bigger question is how will Apple execute this?

I still have a sense that people view games on steam vs normal apps differently though. I know a lot of people who don't feel right pirating certain games, but will gladly pirate other apps. I guess we will see when the App Store launches.

chesspro··on 11" MacBook Air Disassembled
It's really a shame apple put in a 5-point Security Torx for the bottom casing. Just got a new toolkit a few weeks ago... but it doesn't have the security torx tip.

But overall really nice form factor. I love how neat and well fit everything looks.

chesspro··on Apple releases 11.6" Instant-On MacBook Air for $999
I really wish windows had a really good trackpad with similar gestures to a macbook. I think that's one of the main features that's holding me off from buying windows netbooks. It really annoys me when I'm using the trackpad. It's hard to scroll around and navigate around in windows (without a mouse).

Don't get me wrong - I use windows all the time. It's just the lack of an easy to use trackpad irritates me a bit..

Dalton Caldwell did a good job of that during the talk with his startup Imeem and his experiences with the music industry.
chesspro··on Has a USB memory stick ever failed on you?
I've had one fail after two years of use (it wouldn't show up on my mac and failed to sudo mount). I have one right now that glitches now and then. I only keep on my flash drive useful tools that come handy, although I also use it to transfer files between computers occasionally.

I never can completely trust a harddrive with important information. Just make sure you have multiple copies :)

chesspro··on VideoJS (Zencoder, YC W10) re-launches with new site, new features, still free.
Totally agree, no lag whatsoever. I really wish I knew about this before for a site I was making. And great plans - I love the pay-as-you-go pricing. As a person who doesn't do too much video editing but occasionally makes long videos, this is perfect for me. I don't have to be forced to subscribe to a monthly plan on vimeo, which doesn't justify the occasional video I make (which goes beyond their restrictions)
