chhum··on Breaking down JetBrains' complex AI agent strategy
I thunk they're in a real bind. One thing is the product strategy is a mess—I'm guessing that internally they just don't really have product people and with something like AI, which is cross--cutting, that's really hard to manage. They are also in a bind because everyone is loosing money on LLM tools, and Anthropic, for example, make Cluade Code and can charge JetBrains and the other vendors whatever they like. If you don't have deep pockets you then have to pass the cost on, but that hits your biggest customers hardest, which then pushes your users to the competitor product; It's a pretty tough spot. MS buying GitHub when they did looks more and more like a bargain!
chhum··on SoftIorn VM Squared, a Replacement for VMware VSphere
LOL. Can’t see a way to change it but thanks for pointing it out.
chhum··on SoftIorn VM Squared, a Replacement for VMware VSphere
Given all the mayhem form Broadcom following their acquisition I thought this was interesting as an exit route. The product looks very cool
chhum··on Differences Between iOS and Android Mastodon Clients
It is interesting this. I moved from Blackberry to Android to iOS and found that quality of the apps in general in iOS just so much better. I guess the fact that more people pay for apps in iOS means it is worth making the investment, but I also wonder if the different emphasis on the platforms influences which developers work on which one.
chhum··on Can you live without Kubernetes
In fairness the article does point if that Nomad isn’t a mass-market competitor.
chhum··on WTF Is Our Most Critical Cybersecurity Resource? and How Can We Preserve It?
This is a long article but there is so much good information in here, and obviously Derek Pearcy is a bit of a legend. Looking forward to seeing the new Illuminati game from him as well.
chhum··on WTF Is Moldable Development?
I recorded a podcast with Tudor Gîrba on Moldable Development as well if you prefer to consume things that way. https://www.infoq.com/podcasts/tudor-girba-moldable-developm...

The broad thesis, that we spend way too little time thinking about how we understand our systems, is one I'm in strong agreement with.

chhum··on Analyze Then Store? You’re Kidding Right?
This is one of the most interesting bits of new tech I've seen all year. Properly mind blown.
chhum··on WTF Is Wrong with Open Source Communities?
Women aren't a gender minority. > They are in tech.
chhum··on WTF Is Wrong with Open Source Communities?
"The most simple one, that women engage in far fewer numbers explains all observable effects in my opinion." > Well yes. But why do you think that is? If OSS is, in general, hostile to woman (and I would suggest that it is) than obviously fewer of them engage with it. Of course that same problem is reflected all the way up the chain - fewer woman become programmers because computing is hostile to them - a trend which starts at school and has been the case since about the 1980s.
chhum··on How to Recruit and Onboard Neurodivergent People
I found this really interesting. Many of the practices which agile promotes - stand-ups, pair programming and so, are decidedly ableist - not surprising given the make-up of the people who originally promoted it. Good to see some discussion around this finally.
chhum··on The Wolfram Physics Project: A One-Year Update
+1 I found the article fascinating. I interviiewd Stephen for a podcast last year mainly talking about language design (https://www.infoq.com/podcasts/wolfram-language-mathematica/) and found him to be both extremely charming, very interesting, and extremely smart. He was an absolute pleasure to interview and I would have loved to have talked for longer.
chhum··on WTF Happens to Psychological Safety When the Pressure Is On?
I've not seen this discussed much. "When a leader is experiencing significant emotional upset, when they are stressed or ill, their shadow side can emerge. Hogan called this their 'dark-side’ behaviours, which can cause leadership to derail..."
chhum··on Java Feature Spotlight: Text Blocks
Detailed piece on Records here: https://www.infoq.com/articles/java-14-feature-spotlight/
chhum··on Java Feature Spotlight: Text Blocks
Interesting to see how Swift-inspired this feature is.
chhum··on IBM Stops Work on Swift – Q&A with Chris Bailey
They sort of do answer it here: "Swift benefits greatly from being an embedded part of Apple's ecosystem, but it also provides challenges for its organic growth as there's a lot of dependency on Apple for capabilities that the server ecosystem requires. For example, almost all Swift developers use Apple's Xcode as their IDE and it has fantastic support for developing for iOS devices, including the ability to run locally in emulator environments. It would be great to add support for writing server code that allows developers to develop directly into containerized environments from their local IDE by supporting the simple integration into Xcode of development tools such as Appsody. Where there is open governance and open ecosystems, it enables the community to contribute and to solve the problems and use cases that are important to them."
chhum··on Google Earth Ported to Browsers with WebAssembly
I was pretty blown away by this talk https://www.infoq.com/presentations/autocad-webassembly/ on Autocad porting their (30 year old) code base to the web via WASM.
chhum··on Google Releases New Java Logging Framework Flogger
It's tempting to suggest that maybe Java has enough logging frameworks.
chhum··on Developers. Our Last, Best Hope for Ethics?
Interesting to see more and more dicussions of programming and ethics emerging. This is a great read
chhum··on Swift 4.0 Released
There's a good summary of this release here: https://www.infoq.com/news/2017/09/swift-4-official-release
chhum··on “Oracle laid off all Solaris tech staff in a classic silent EOL of the product”
More details on this here: https://www.infoq.com/news/2017/09/solaris-sunsets
chhum··on Was Swift based on Kotlin?
Interesting Podcast generally but I wss very struck by this exchange "Kotlin and Swift are very similar - how did that happen?

I don’t have first-hand information about why - both projects were started at about the same time, but JetBrains published the description fairly early on."

Was Swift deprived from Kotlin?

chhum··on Ask HN: What are some good technology blogs to follow?
+! for The Morning Paper. InfoQ runs a quarterly eMag based on it which is easier to keep up with. https://www.infoq.com/morning-paper-quarterly-review
chhum··on The psychology of stress and burnout
I saw John Willis, Director of Ecosystem Development for Docker, talk about this at QCon London in the context of our industry. First time I've ever cried at a tech conference; it was an absolutely amazing session. There is a video here: https://www.infoq.com/presentations/it-burnout
chhum··on Does Running Java on Docker Containers Violate Agreements?
If you use OpenJDK you can end up with an unknown version of Java - specifically whatever Debian or Canonical happened to pull from the source tree and ship, which in some cases have been automated top-of-tree pulls before. See for example: github.com/docker-library/openjdk/commit/00a9c5...
chhum··on Using the Actor-Model Language Pony for FinTech
I find Pony really interesting. It’s a strange observation given how different they are but it reminds me a bit of Java. When I first saw Java I thought “Finally, a language that takes away the madness of manual memory management.” Pony does the same thing for threads, and Actors feels like a really elegant way to solve that. Obviously Erlang has Actors to but I never got on with its syntax, and Akka but Akka always feels like it needs Scala.
chhum··on Java EE and Microservices in 2016
This seems like a contradiction in terms to me. I’d have thought that using a container, even a relatively lightweight one like Wildly, pretty much removed all the advantages of the mciroservices approach because you need so much machinery along with it. What do people use for Microservices in Java shops - Spring Boot?
