chopin··on Mystery of 60-Second Fluctuations in Power Grids Solved
Jenkins server has the feature to randomize job start time since at least 15 years. One would've thought this is a well known problem.

I wished cron had a similar feature. I missed that on acouple of occasions.

chopin··on Ask HN: If the models are so good, why doesn't OpenAI just start 100 companies?
That'd be great CEO's, however.
chopin··on Eight Bits of Trust: eMudhra's CA keys cracked in milliseconds
No but it's less likely to pick a number <10 than >50.
chopin··on Revolut Partially Unavailable
Seems that a bunch of services are offline or not working. I noticed because my virtual credit card waa declined. As well the app lacks a bunch of functionality.
chopin··on The plight of the public potty
Australia is great! German posting from down under...
chopin··on Source code of the Estonian online voting system
That's a big ask for trust. It illustrates nicely why electronic voting is a bad idea.
chopin··on Source code of the Estonian online voting system
How is guaranteed that the open source code runs on the voting and tallying computers? How can citizens verify this?
chopin··on Source code of the Estonian online voting system
If we are talking about the Berlin elections there had to be great public pressure for the election being repeated. Officials denied any impact on the final result. Afair courts had to be involved. Pretty shameful. The whole thing didn't further my trust in German democracy.
chopin··on Source code of the Estonian online voting system
That would make coercion pretty easy.
chopin··on Whatever became of holography? (2011)
You don't need a laser but a monochromatic point source. Modern LEDs work quite well.

Depth of reflection holograms depends on the quality of the reference beam. A divergent one gives limited depth but a parallel or convergent one would give much more. But this is much more difficult to achieve.

chopin··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
That's very unusual for 20 years ago. I remember this from my childhood, 60 years ago, where this was common. But even in the 90s that had stopped almost completely.
chopin··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
It's harmful as it tastes awful. At least compared to a good traditional wine.
chopin··on Stop Turning every purchase into a tip request
In Germany, it is not very common. Where I see it, I avoid the business.
chopin··on Vancouver PD website features Quick Escape button that wipes itself from history
What does eggcorn mean?
chopin··on European "age verification" "app" forcing everyone to use Android or iOS
The app will likely have access to a bunch of unique identifiers on the phone. At least on Android whichs core concept is spying on the user.

For me, it's enough that your activity could be linked to any unique identity. I don't want mandatory government apps on my phone, that's very chinese. We should strive for better.

Edited to add: your linked FAQ conveniently leaves open how the communication between the web site and the app happens. There are myriad of ways that ones behaviour leaks in this step.

chopin··on European "age verification" "app" forcing everyone to use Android or iOS
Governments will track with whom you verify. Much worse.
chopin··on A metallurgist's doubts about self-replicating probes
Honestly, I always assumed that consensus was that replication is the hardest part. I believe we have almost none of the technologies required for that.

Whenever I read of von Neumann probes I always thought "How can that even made possible?".

chopin··on A bug which affected only left handed users
You don't seem to use scissors.
chopin··on Delta flight hit by firework while landing at Midway Airport on Fourth of July
Apparently, West...

Edit: before 1989.

chopin··on Delta flight hit by firework while landing at Midway Airport on Fourth of July
Faring better than some other country doesn't mean its good.

Try calling up rt.com via a German phone network.

And calling our chancellor a liar will get your house searched.

chopin··on Delta flight hit by firework while landing at Midway Airport on Fourth of July
I was referring to"hey you probably shouldn’t blow your hand off”. I am not against regulations per se, I am German after all.

But a sane discussion should be had how far this should go. Regulating things which are dangerous to the person taking a risk knowingly is over the top in my book.

chopin··on Delta flight hit by firework while landing at Midway Airport on Fourth of July
But that is the maxim which drives almost everything we do on a daily basis.
chopin··on Delta flight hit by firework while landing at Midway Airport on Fourth of July
But this is none of your business. I live in Germany, where everything is regulated by well meaning people. Going so far to regulate what you ought to say or to watch.

It is hellish. I don't recognize the country any more in which I was born and raised.

chopin··on If you're a button, you have one job
But there are things like consistency which one can check for. And should.
chopin··on Hackers shoveled snow for company, were rewarded with network admin access
I loathe two things in password requirements: special characters and not allowing spaces. C'mon, it's 2026. Require 20 characters and call it a day.
chopin··on Choosing a Public DNS Resolver
I use 9.9.9.9 but it failed me a couple of times in the past two months. Cloudflare is very robust but I just don't like them. Falling back on them silently is not what I want. I am rather using them directly when quad9 fails.
chopin··on Danish privacy activist Lars Andersen raided by police
I tend to disagree. 1984 seems the playbook for the majority of politicians. For them, it's inspirational.
chopin··on Project Valhalla, Explained: How a Decade of Work Arrives in JDK 28
The problem in a large codebase is keeping consistency when upgrading.

I upgraded a codebase of approx 100 kloc from Java 7 to Java 8 a couple of years ago. As I didn't want mixed patterns for the same thing throughout the code base I replaced most of the loops with their streaming equivalent. I had the luxury of having the budget for doing so.

Mixing patterns of newer language features alongside older ones can make the code base hard to read.

chopin··on Curl will not accept vulnerability reports during July 2026
It presumably runs in a gazillion scripts.
chopin··on FCC wants to kill burner phones by forcing telecoms to get all customers' IDs
That's an illusion. Two days of location data and you can pin down the owner pretty well.

I thought about getting a SIM when Germany was about to introduce ID requirements. I quickly realized this being a moot point.
